the final scene of Lily (Anya Taylor-Joy) encounters Tim (Anton Yelchin), who now works as a restaurant valet. Following Mark's death, Lily has once again found academic success and is interviewing for college admission. She talks with Tim about the planned murder which wasn't carried out by him. She then mentions a letter from Amanda, who has been institutionalized in a psychiatric hospital for Mark's murder. The letter is shown to detail Amanda's experiences at the institution and a recurring dream about a future in which the humans let the community fall into disarray due to their vanity and it becomes overrun by thoroughbred horses. When Tim asks what the letter said, Lily says she threw the letter away without reading it scene from the black-comedy thriller film called "THOROUGHBREDS" Directed by Cory Finley

I love the contrast of the characters at the end. One girl is incapable of feeling any emotion and yet the last time we see her she forces out a perfunctory, ambiguous smile and seems to want to maintain some sort of meaningful relationship/correspondence with her "friend" The other girl, who didn't even bother to read the letter, is now cold-blooded and feels no sympathy, no regret, no sense of right or wrong. People are just a means to an end. Brilliant.

@BlueBerryFairy1 interesting. I would point out that her friend,Lily, is smiling in the picture (Amanda is not) that Amanda is staring at and therefore she may be attempting to imitate the smile she sees on her friends face. However,as I said, her smile is *ambiguous* I never claimed that it couldn't be interpreted as a genuine smile. A positive relationship with someone who framed you for murder? It's delusional to think anything about their relationship was positive even if Amanda felt that way, she was wrong. (look where she ended up) Yes, Amanda did volunteer, but obviously she's not mentally/emotionally sound. What reasonable person would offer herself up to be framed for murder? Lily took advantage of Amanda. She also said how she can say anything to the Dr's and they just nod and right it down as if what she says to them means anything at all. This clearly demonstrates how the Dr's are incapable of providing any real help to Amanda, because they think they are getting insightful information from her, yet she's just making it up as she goes or whatever she says doesn't actually mean anything but the Dr's take it as meaningful. So I don't think her therapy is working at all. Her therapy sessions are on a path to no where. It also makes more sense that Lily wouldn't want anything to do with Amanda and expresses it publicly to maintain the illusion that, she;Lily, had nothing to do with the murder. I've said enough. I don't want to beat a dead horse, so to speak.

@@Flosseveryday Lily very likely read the letter, though. She's lying to maintain the story she created, but it's..... very likely she actually read it. The viewers hearing and seeing amanda for the last time can also indicate that Lily is re-reading it to herself as she's mentioning it to Tim.

@@Flosseveryday I feel like Amanda volunteered because it seemed to her like the most logical thing to do. She felt her life was meaningless and was going to go nowhere so she figured she might as well do it since her life wasn’t going anywhere, so she figured she might as well “complete the task” (as she mentions earlier) and it wouldn’t be much of a loss for her considering she wasn’t doing much anyway.

@@jaman_jy I have a few interpretations for the ending, and one of them is that maybe Lily does feel the slightest hint of remorse for her actions. She did break down crying in Amanda’s lap after she killed her stepdad, and maybe she did read Amanda’s letter but then quickly threw it away to try to bury the truth and hide the guilt she does have somewhere inside of her. Then Lily saying “I don’t know, I threw it away” is her dodging the question because she doesn’t want to think about Amanda or her letter or the situation she put her in. Again, this is just one interpretation but I think it does check out.

I think Lily didn’t punk out on the plan because she felt bad for Amanda. I felt she didn’t think her plan would actually work. It isn’t until Amanda willingly drugs herself that gives Lily the push to go forward with the plan. Even in the end she doesn’t actually care what happened to her “friend.” The true nature of a sociopath.

@@immadebe6043 she could’ve been crying because the situation was intense and stressful and she was scared. she literally just killed someone. she realized amanda was the only person that would actually comfort her in that situation but it was too late. but amanda was only important to her when she needed her. after it was all done and she got what she wanted, she stopped caring.

@@lamb9770 Dude it's really just your on interpretation. Honestly she is just a narcissists, and probably has anti social personality disorder. She honestly can't be a psychopath if she's crying in a situation like that. Besides it's just a made up term used by society for people who do crazy shit like the girl in the movie.

Those 2 girls deserved each other- and I mean that in a good way. Noone else understood them and Amanda sacrificed herself for her friend and Lily was both grateful and sad because with this one great gesture of love her friend, her soul mate, would be taken away from her. Lily truly loved Amanda but not as much as she hated her stepdad

Think people are oversimplifying the characters in the comments. They are both fucked up characters but also empathetic, otherwise we wouldn’t watch. Also lily has clearly read the letter, hence why we get to see it, she’s lying during the entire conversation with Yelchin because she has to.

Anya Taylor-Joy look so good with an emotionless character especially with a serious personality in the movie. At least he knew how to nurture talent (if you nutured him back that is, lol sorry sorry, that's so bad...but my point still stands!! Young actresses need to be careful in what roles they pick in order to have an actual RESPECTED career....I mean, a reboot of "Carrie"??! Total miscast....let's hope Anya's career will be more like Natalie Portman's

@marazara5257

I doubt it. Even if Amanda confessed what happened there’s a high chance no one will believe her. People already assumed she murdered her horse because she wanted to and on top of that they already think she’s crazy. Even Amanda’s mother worries about her and assumed something bad happened saying “What did she do.” when Lily knocked on their door. On the other hand, Lily grew up in a more richer/proper environment & is considered a perfect child. I feel like they’d believe Lily’s word over Amanda. I’m pretty sure that’s why Lily wanted to frame Amanda. She knew people would never believe Amanda.

It's an interesting detail that while Lily gets to go to her prestigious school like she wanted, she had to kill her stepdad to do it and while Amanda's hopefully finally getting the help she needs, she had to take the fall in murdering her friends stepdad for it to happen. Which leaves Tim who despite being a shameless drug dealer at first, whatever conscience still has left kicks in and he doesn't kill the stepdad, so now Tim's a valet, which might mean he's turned his life around a little, so hopefully in a better place than they are.

@Jam Drew lily has the tendencies of a sociopath. Her stepfather tells her off and explains how she disregards other people’s feelings, especially her mother. She tried to manipulate him into leaving her mother for her own benefit. Lily contemplated Amanda had no life worth living since she’s unable to feel anything, so she had no problem pinning the blame on her. If she was able to throw away her friend she’d have no problem throwing away a letter.

@@mrdegrassifreak I thought the cut to Amanda narrating the letter implied that Lily did read it, and may have kept it as well. This is the girl who literally took the rap for murder for her, after all - and thematically it's a nice arc to go from "the girls have to be cordial but aren't friends" to "Lily pretends to be cold to Amanda but secretly appreciates her in her own way"

The best part about art is we are free to enjoy whatever forms it comes in. Some people like movies that others dont. No need to be rude because this movie didnt jive with you. I loved it and thought it was well done. There are movies I dont like, but I dont go around blasting them with negative comments. Instead I just dont support it by paying to see it and focus more on finding what I enjoy and support that. Try to put your energy more towards enjoying your life and you will probably not have the urge to put others down......unless you just enjoy being a prick, in which case, you're doing what you enjoy which is alright, to an extent. In the end though, people wont enjoy you because of it
