@@RoseyFuture not only higher taxes, but higher gas prices and less oil. The US imports 63% of its oil from Canada and Mexico and Trump has stated that there will be no oil exemption for his tariffs. And the great thing is: Start a trade war and they will take their oil exports SOMEWHERE ELSE. Asia is already lining up to buy up all the oil that WON'T be exported to the US. Canada has a good reputation around the world. Canada has been working on expanding trade with many countries over the past number of years. I am sure Canada will find other markets for their exports. The fruit and vegetables we import from the US can certainly come from Mexico and I'm sure the Mexican Government would love to sell to Canada. The United States can become an island unto itself and the rest of the world will trade with each other.

I remember the first time Canadian citizens essentially said eff you to the US, and people were specifically avoiding American produce. I was one of them, and it was surprisingly easy to get everything I needed/wanted from other countries of origin. I haven't bought a Florida orange since then, and I continue to look at where something's coming from before I buy. We rely heavily on the US, but it's because they're so close and we WERE great neighbours. Now? I think we can get what we need elsewhere, with much more reasonable countries. It's gonna hurt in the short term, but this may be the beginning of a new Canada trade economy, and a very big loss to the US.

My friend owns a mattress factory in Florida. His employees are mostly Trump supporters who believe they will make more money. He just told them there will be no Christmas bonuses this year because they need the money to hoard as much materials as possible before the tariff. Mostly imported from China. They just can't source the same quality fabric domestically. It's not even about the price. He kindly announced it early so the employees wouldn't be racking up credit card debt with the wishful thinking that they can pay it off in January. The employees were so angry, there's no way to reason with them. So he's calling it a "transition period." I think a lot of them believe Trump will bring back manufacturing and the company will be able to source fabrics domestically. They are still hoping for larger bonuses in 2 years or so.

Yes, there will be a transition period where things are going to be a bit rough until new supply chains are established domestically. The same type of thing happened when all of the manufacturing left America in the late 90s, where millions lost their jobs, as companies offshored to China under the free trade deals of Clinton that allowed American companies to take jobs away from Americans, and hide their money overseas, while taking advantage of basically slave labor and zero regulations in China and other nations.

The idea that tarrifs are punitive towards "foreigners" who they've been told are responsible for all their problems is so simplistically naive that only an angry maga supporter could ever think it was true. At a very shallow level, yes, if you penalise foreign imports, then that allows local producers and manufacturers to move into that space, but that's such a childish understanding of the situation. In reality, even if American manufacturing was able to move into that space (and it's debatable whether that's even possible - where are they going to get the raw materials and the labor pool from ?) , they would be selling their produce at the new higher prices, because that's the whole point of the tarrif - to raise the cost of cheaper foreign goods up to the level where they're no longer cheaper than the cost of local products. Nowhere does this result in lower local prices for consumers. The problem is that the MAGA cult was successfully brainwashed into seeing tarrifs as a punishment on people they hate, and that's all they wanted to hear.

The good news is that the federal government that we have in place, has already been through Trump 1.0, and there are already free trade agreements in place between Canada and a lot of the rest of the world. I just bought a bag of quite reasonably-priced tangerines from Spain at the grocery around the corner. The same federal government that we have in place now, also had a pipeline constructed over the Rockies to the Pacific coast so that Alberta oil can be sold to Pacific countries (although this was a somewhat fortuitous consequence to some unrelated internal squabbles, but still, we'll take it). I am hopeful that Justin Trudeau is educating the orange bag of goo about all this today, as a follow-up to the excellent words from Mexico's president yesterday.

@demigod1013

What is a tariff? Tariffs 101: A tariff is an import tax on goods [merchandise coming IN from another country] If there is a 30% tariff on iphones (ie. from China) that 30% tax by the U.S. government - TRUMP is putting that tax on iphones. China, nor the chinese manufacturer ARE NOT paying that 30% tax. It's the U.S. business/manufacturer that incures the 30% tax cost. Now, do you think.. A) the U.S. business absorbs the 30% cost, cutting into their profit? Or B) Do you think they pass this cost onto the customer/consumer and increase the cost of the iphone? *If you didn't say B) I really don't think you have any hope of understanding anything! Ever!* As tariffs go up, the cost of the product goes up. China doesn't pay..the business doesn't pay..and Trump doesn't pay! If the argument made that they're going to raise tariffs to force manufacturing to come back to the U.S. so they can increase manufacturing on U.S. soil, fine..*however* costs are still going to go up, because there is a reason manufacturers left the U.S. in the first place, to get.. - cheap labor - no environmental regulations - no health and safety protection for the worker The only way to bring this back to the U.S. and watch costs go down, is to.. - break unions - lower wages - ignore environmental regulations - ignore health and safety *..and if you think that's for the worker - again - I can't help you!* Trump DOES NOT CARE about the worker nor the low to middle income class

The irony in what you say is that they did the same thing when they voted for Hoover in 1928. He and his congress passed the Smoot-Hawley tariff (similar to Trump's proposal, but not quite as bad) and immediately plunged into the Great Depression. Took 10 years and WW2 to fix that mess. To the credit of the Americans in the 1930s: they didn't reelect Hoover ever. Lol.

Love the video! Case in point-just a couple of minutes ago, the CEO of Balsam Brands (creator of Balsam Hill Christmas trees, which I own and absolutely LOVE!) mentioned that the cost of their artificial trees is going to increase. Their trees typically range between $500 and $800, and they really are the best on the market. After years of using real trees, I honestly can’t tell the difference, and the best part is I don’t have to sweep up dead pine needles anymore-win-win! However, the CEO explained that if they were forced to manufacture these trees in the U.S., the cost would skyrocket to around $3,000 per tree. He doesn’t believe Americans would be willing to pay that, and honestly, who would? This highlights a major flaw in MAGA logic. They seem to think everyone is clamoring for minimum wage jobs while ignoring the fact that they’d be the first to throw a tantrum if they had to live on those wages themselves. And let’s be real-many of them should stop googling ‘Tariff’ (which they don’t even fully understand) and start researching Chapter 13 or Chapter 7 bankruptcy. If they think times are tough under Biden, they’re in for a rude awakening when their economic fairy tales collapse. HAHAHAHA. Oh, and for everyone reading this: please start documenting store prices, gas prices, and anything else you can. These MAGA types are going to try to pin the fallout from Trump’s disasters on Hillary, Obama, Biden, or even Bill Clinton if they can stretch it that far. Enough of that nonsense. They need to be called out and smashed with facts every time they try to rewrite history!

Small businesses will thrive under tariffs. It's only multinational corporations that are getting screwed. They offshored all of their manufacturing to cheap labor countries decades ago and have been screwing over Americans (and Canadians) with insane profit margins. Now they are being hit with a tax that will shift people's spending to local sources instead of the Wal-Mart's of the world. I find it ironic that leftists have been screaming forever about corporations paying their fair share and when Trump imposes a tax on their predatory behaviors, everybody whines about it. It will be rough at the beginning, as supply chains change and adapt, but in the medium to long term, it will bring back jobs and more importantly keep money inside America (and Canada) instead of in China or other places.
