5:10 Bit of a minor error there, the WD 2-8-0 is not the most produced British Steam Locomotive. They're in a very close second place. The LNWR DX Goods Class beat them by 8. 935 WD 2-8-0s, 943 LNWR DX Goods. The DXs have no surviving members due to them being all withdrawn before preservation became popular. They have some interesting history that could make a cool TGL episode in my opinion. For example, the LNWR selling 86 DXs to the L&YR scared independent locomotive manufacturers greatly, enough that they went to get an injunction to stop the LNWR from selling them. I counted both the WD types as "The most produced locomotives" when I mentioned them 47 seconds in. I must have stupidly tallied the 2-10-0s as *'the* WDs' again 5 minutes in.

@@FlyingScott If the WD 2-8-0s had started production earlier, they likely could have surpassed 943. It'd likely mean less LMS 8Fs being built, though.

@@FlyingScott On the topic of the Sohan Railway Disaster, I suggest checking out the pictures of the accident. It really demonstrates the hard work put in by the allies to reopen that section of line in less than 24 hours. It's easy to find via google images.

I would certainly like to head a history of the DX Goods as what little I have heard of them up to now has been basically nothing but bad; I've heard them unfavorably compared to the Liberty Ships of WWII, an outdated design built simply and cheaply in their thousands because nobody expected them to last very long. Another comparison has been to the Super D's, with the same awkward LNWR controls, half of which were backwards from how every other company designed their engines thus making them a pig to drive, but with none of the G2 Class' pulling power. In essence, the only reason they were built in such great numbers was because the LNWR had a pathological "good enough" policy, rarely striving for perfection in any way, and none survived into preservation because by the time that movement got started they were all worn out or had fallen apart. For visuals, a model has been included in the SteamSoundsSupreme "Stainmore, Shap, & Eden Valley" route, though it was meant for AI traffic only and thus lacks many details, not even having smoke emitter points. I understand that Kris Wilson of Caledonia Works intends to make a full fledged version at some point, but I could not say when.

I can remember the dub d 280s running at Hornsey back in the late 50s they used to pull coal trains down from Nottinghamshire along with the Standard 9Fs My understanding is that the dub d 2 10 0s only an in Scotland. Another common site at Hornsey was the Austerity J94 saddle tanks which the LNER also bought many of.

Great video! One mistake: the NS 4300s drove until the end of steam in the Netherlands, wikipedia says until 1952 but there are various pictures of them driving until 1957. Fun fact: the NS 4300 was the last steam locomotive in the Netherlands to be overhauled in 1956

Did not know that, hadn't picked up on it in Railhobby's issue about the Austerities either. Your fun fact is actually incorrect. The last one to be overhauled by NS seems to be Efteling Stoomtrein Maatschappij 'Moortje'. The fact is commemorated on a plaque on the locomotive.

@@FlyingScott ah yes you're right, but that wasn't a NS locomotive. The loc is from the Efteling and only overhauled in the NS workshop. Actually NS 3737 is also overhauled bij the NS in 1996, but that was also an exception. The Austerity is the last one to be 'normally' overhauled for normal passenger/goods transport.

Can you possibly cover the PRR ps-4 4-4-0 engines at some point? I rarely see too much about the early PRR locomotives and this would be an interesting look into early motive power of a legendary railroad.

my guess as to why war time designs "kick so much buttocks" is because they sacrafice style for pure functionality. As in a time of need and dire emergency, the focus is on raw performance rather than attracting customers. Because that one extra wagon could mean the difference between defeat and victory in the wartime mindset.

Not sure if you still take episode request but it'd be neat if you talked about those Schenectady built 2-6-0's that were in the UK in 1897 (forgot what they were called or what railway they for for). That could be a good lead way into an episode about the other famous US built British Locomotives, the S160 and S100. Those US Moguls actually got popular enough in the UK for their time that it lead to the adopting of the 2-6-0 type among most UK railways.

So Big Bertha (Midland Railway number 2290) built in 1919 with an 0-10-0 wheelbase doesn't count? I suppose a class of 1 locomotives isn't much of a class. The single GER's Decapod or more formally the Class A55 suburban tank engine of 1902, the UK's first locomotive of the 0-10-0 wheel arrangement won't count either as there was only one of them and after less a year of trial runs in which it proved it could do what it was designed to do it was withdrawn only to re-emerge as an 0-8-0 tender engine. It was hamstrung by small coal bunker and water tanks. And whilst in had annaxle load of less than 17 tons its weight per foot of length would have required significant strengthening of bridges on the routes out of Luverpool Street. No, WD 2-10-0s were the 3rd class with ten coupled driving wheels, butnwerenthe first with a leading pony truck.

My source, 'British Locomotive Classes; Principal Big Four Locomotive Classes As At 1945' does say Big Bertha and the Decapod were the first ten coupled engines, but it does then state that the Large Woofers were the first ten-coupled "Class to work in the British Isles". So it too doesn't count one-offs as a class.

There are loads of American locomotives without cowcatchers, take the Pennsy 'Decapods' for instance. Also, yes, some of the 2-10-0s were built with headlights.

Great video. Just wanted to say that these locomotives were also used for creating the JŽ (Yugoslav railways) class 38 Liberation class. Which were used for heavy freight traffic in Yugoslavia. These WD locomotives were so great that they were used in a Socialist country.
