I have no idea how I missed your answer until just this morning, Dave. Thanks very much for the information and your time. 73.

I used an inverted V antenna that I built over corrugated metal roof portable buildings in northern Iraq to send HF 6.025 back to Kuwait using just a 20 watt manpack and they could hear me loud and clear a few hours out of the day. I built the di-pole base station in Kuwait and angled it to the location up north that I knew I would be operating. I believe the metal roofing helped me send my signal back down south as I also angled the inverted V in that general direction using my compass.

I think you should also note that the ladder line should dtay away from the metal roof as it can mess up the feedline tuining.

Since metal panels affect reflection and refraction partly based on the panels dimensions, and the wavelength of the signals, being propagated, it might be interesting to see if any HAM's have used their metal roofs to an advantage.

I mounted a Hustler 4btv n top of a pole building years ago and it worked great. I'm thinking of doing this summer on top of my quanset building.

In new construction or a recent re-roofing, the roof sheathing, whether OSB or plywood, may be lined on the underside with aluminum foil as a "radiant barrier" to minimize heat loss or gain. So even if no metal is visible on a composition or wood shingle roof, to an antenna nearby it might look like one giant sheet of aluminum.
@howardhiggins96413 жыл бұрын
Yes, but I bet its even more complicated as the individual aluminum "sheets" aren't intentionally bonded together or grounded.

I just hooked one leg of a 4:1 balun up to my 30x40 metal roof and the other leg up to my 20x30 garage metal roof a few feet apart as a sort of roof dipole and am able to tune down on 40 and 6 meters. A few coils in the coax and I can get it to tune down on parts of 20 and even 80 lol

why not use the metal roof as the ground plane an run the driven element up into the tree? making a basic sloper antenna but instead of sloping down it slopes up? with an antenna switch he could have 2 slightly directional antennas aimed like east an west?

I will be dealing with a metal roof at my new QTH timely video for me much thanks Dave

Hello, thanks for the video. I have a similar question. I want to install a vertical efhw antenna for 27 MHz on the gutter side of a sloped metalic roof. Do will the roof radiate against the antenna ? Do you think that i will have acceptable performance ? Thanks !
@pomchan47043 жыл бұрын
IMHO, I think Eric will do great with the metal roof, I have here almost the idental situation, I have an all metal barn, with my dipole @ 30 feet with the center over the roof, its resonant @ 3.2mhz(design) i do feed with it with 33ft of RG59, then to my LMR400 line to the house. I found that in my setup with the metal building grounded and bonded. The distorted field and reflections on 20,17,15,10,6 really help, on 80 I find its a still a cloud warmer. I also think of the metal roof and a really big ground plane, with the center of my dipole 10feet above the roof, I think of my dipole at only 10feet above the ground. I maybe way off base but its just my opinion. DE VE1DAC

Trying to determine with kind of HF antenna for my first HF rig. Upgraded to General a week ago. I, too, have a metal roof. Someone suggested loading the roof. How would that even be possible? Would it work?
@davecasler3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't try loading the roof, because the various sheets of metal are not necessarily in good electrical contact with each other. But other than that it is theoretically possible. I would recommend that you suspend a dipole above the roof. See DCasler.com/reference. The reference antenna is the MFJ-2010. Or you can put up whatever suits you best. Good luck with your antenna system. 73, Dave

If you made a metal roof with two layers of metal seperated with a dielectric, would it make a large slot antenna?

Dave, how about a video on the new FCC rule for evaluating RF exposure...
@BryanTorok3 жыл бұрын
YES, I especially would like to know if there any easy-to-use software or online tools for performing the evaluation. I always figured that my antennas are far enough away from people and power levels low enough that I didn't need to perform the evaluation. Now the FCC is all existing systems to perform the eval within two years and all new or modified antenna installations to perform the eval IMMEDIATELY.

Check out Rias channel, she gives all the details including calculators for doing the evaluations

My Wife is pushing to replace our home roof with a metal roof. I have No HOA telling me "no antennas". Will the metal roof be a problem for outside roof antennas?
@nobodynoone25002 жыл бұрын
Laying a correctly colored wire antenna along the ridgeline can work well. I have also done wire antennas along a property fence to good effect. For more stringent HOA's i've heard of false chimneys to contain antennas.

Easiest solution, do not live in an HOA. Why do people live in HOAs? We have enough government to willingly subject oneself to another layer of it.

@@howardhiggins9641 a shame people want more laws. You have the federal laws, then the state has laws, then the city or county has laws. THen thats not enough people want to enact more laws upon themselves by living in an HOA. I will never understand

Exactly my thoughts. Why in the world would you choose to live in a "home" that forbids you your favorite hobby? You are just makingh your life miserable.
