Thoughts of times gone by

Our region suffered badly as Britain’s traditional heavy industries - coal mining, shipbuilding, iron and textile manufacture - became increasingly uncompetitive in the world market, a market that was even more depressed after the 1929 Wall Street crash.
It was a time of economic decline and profound domestic hardship for many in the North East, powerfully symbolised by the 1936 Jarrow Crusade when 200 men marched from the ravaged down to London, demanding the right to work.
