Good Review. I absolutely love The HCSB Study Bible. It has a fabulous look to it. The use of "Yahweh" is what threw it over the top for me. I had to hunt down a new copy as they no longer publish the HCSB. I like the CSB as well and also have a CSB Study Bible. But the HCSB is one of my favorites. Have a blessed year! 🙏

Finally someone who loves the HCSB like I do. I use other translations too, but that HCSB is just a real drawing in for me. I have found the CSB to have a "clunky" feel to me and although I keep picking it up, I keep putting it back down. Great review!
@denleemel4 жыл бұрын
The CSB is way less clunky than the HCSB. The CSB is a really smooth translation, even smoother than the ESV.

The HCSB really isn't so bad. Granted, as a Catholic I lean towards the "Revised Standard." But the HCSB is surprisingly readable. And it's helpful that when Jesus, an apostle, or the devil quotes from the OT, we see it in bold faced type with an indication as to what they're quoting. And unlike that GARBAGE the "New Revised Standard," the HCSB does NOT hesitate to use masculine pronouns at times. I was surprised at how good the HCSB was.
@somecalvinist68754 жыл бұрын
I ended up getting The Apologetics Bible because of the “Twisted Scripture” entries throughout, which show you common proof texts that are misrepresented due to context errors. It happened to only come in HCSB at the time and after years of using the NASB and KJV, I have to say, I was surprised. It isn’t a bad translation whatsoever.

I am surprised you did not mention that the HCSB has far superior references and notes than the CSB. It is too bad that they dropped (and modified) so many of them when they put out the CSB. IF you want to sell your HCSB, let me know.

I find the CSB is closer to the NIV than the ESV, which I think follows closer to the NASB & NKJV, having the more formal sentence structure and terminology. The CSB is for the most part to me more informal. Just my own observations. I enjoy all these translations actually & like doing cross comparisons amongst them all when reading/studying. Holman was very smart in starting off even their basic economy editions with line matching, something Crossway has finally done with one of their flagship editions, the thinline, in their Thinline reference edition. I hope your channel explodes in subs soon brother, I've been enjoying watching all your vids! Keep going!😃👍

The CSB is a better overall translation than the HCSB and the ESV. In fact, I believe it to be the best overall translation in English. And every CSB I have seen has been Smyth Sewn with line matching text, including the non leather trutones. Move to the CSB for your congregation. Even the CSB translation choices I didn't like at first, I now prefer. The CSB is a really great rendering of God's Word. I wouldn't have thought so when I was in the KJV only cultist camp, but as wisdom by God's grace has taught me, I made my way to the ESV and now to the CSB and have been more that blessed and happy in that choice.

This was a good presentation Brock. You sound like you got a good head on your shoulders - unlike a lot of so called "Bible Reviewers" here on You Tube. You are also right on when you said that the new CSB is trying to take on the ESV. When the ESV Study Bible came out it blew sales records out of the water. They ESV has been kicking butt since 2008 and Holman HAD to act to keep their profit margins solid.

It still is bouncing up and down from 6,5, and 4. The CSB Schyular will be out ar the end of 2019. I know there are complaints - and I have the Fans is the CSB/HCSB FB Group but the HCSB is gone for good. Gary Derby. I think Kevin Grady hit the nail on the head. It is all about $$$$$$$$$ - not Bible translation accuracy. To put it more bluntly...Holman is trying to compete with the NIV and ESV Study Bibles. They stopped Capitalizing the Names of the Deity. They took controversial verses and put them in the bottom of the page instead of putting them in brackets. They got rid of the Bullet Notes - which I thought was a cool feature. They also put in more liberal "Gender Friendly" language in CSB text. Worse of all the new CSB Bibles have cheap, cheap, cheap paper - much worse quality than the old HCSB. It is so thin that the "ghosting" of the text is more obvious. All in all the CSB is a step BACK and NOT forward. The fact that the CSB sales are good is because it is the newest kid on the block and people are curious.
@radioman19556 жыл бұрын
Henry Bemis That is NOT what I meant. The CSB is better than the HCSB. For one they were never consistent with the name Yahweh. Over the four revisions that they made of the HCSB, the name Yahweh got changed many times from Yahweh way to Lord. The capitalization in the original text those are not capitalized and what they did was go back to the original text. And they did not do gender inclusive, but did gender accurate. Another thing I have both HCSB and I have CSB. The paper is the same sometimes even better, everything is sewn binding, where not all HCSBs were. And I covers are not bad but they are better then Nelson’s or Zondervan’s. No they’ve only been out just a little over a year so expect a quality to get better not worse. So I could not disagree more with your statements. Although this HCSB wasn’t a bad translation, the CSB is much better.

I had the Spurgeon Bible and promptly got rid of it. I thought it was too much of a gimmick. It had book intros by Spurgeon. The study notes from Spurgeon were sparse compared to a regular study Bible. It also had some pages that had excerpts from Spurgeon books or his notes. For me, I think it would be better to get a solid CSB study Bible and get some of Spurgeon's books separately.

It is certainly MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better than that garbage the 'New International" and the obnoxiously gender inclusive "New Revised Standard." The translation reads pretty well. And as you put it, whenever Jesus, an apostle, or the devil for that matter quotes from the OT, they put it in bold faced typed with an indication of what they're quoting. As far as more recent versions go, I was surprised at how good and readable the HCSB is.

It is sad to see up-dates in Bible translations ( such as: Holman, NIV, and ESV) that are NOT improvements.
@thomasjefferson65 жыл бұрын
The HCSB is now out of print. Like those who prefer the real NIV (not the fake NIV of 2011), you have to hunt for the old HCSB from second hand bookstores or from various online used book sites in order to obtain it. The CSB has made many hundreds of changes to the text in order to make it "gender neutral" (i.e. feminist). It is far more gender-neutral than is the ESV and in that regard at the very least is much more liberal than the ESV. Gender-neutral language was not used in the inspired Hebrew or Greek, and it has no place in the English, either. (Those who do not understand the function of the generic masculine in language should go back to grammar school before starting their Bible study). The CSB is just another gender-neutral/Westcott-Hort Bible, of which there is now a glut on the market, all of which disagree with each other. Ho-hum.
@JackmeriusTacktheritrix-0005 жыл бұрын
@Thomas Jefferson - Can you provide an example or two of this gender neutral usage, please?
@thomasjefferson65 жыл бұрын
Sure. For the NIV, compare the 1984 NIV to the 2011 NIV in such verses as: Genesis 15:15, Exodus 10:6, Psalms 8:4, Luke 3:11, Acts 5:30, and Romans 2:3. For the CSB, compare to the HCSB in such verses as Psalms 8:4, Proverbs 27:17, Matthew 4:9, and Hebrews 12:7. The CSB also uses the phrase "brothers and sisters" frequently, a phrase found nowhere in the actual Scriptures, but which is used frequently in modern "politically correct" Bible versions in order to get around the generic (or sometimes masculine specific) "brethren", as in such verses as the following: Genesis 3:15, Romans 10:1, Galatians 6:1, Philippians 4:8, I Corinthians 14:20, and Ephesians 6:23-24. In the ESV, the phrase "brothers and sisters" is usually put into a footnote at the bottom of the page as a legitimate rendering for the Greek anthropos, which it is not, but at least in the ESV the phrase is not foisted into the actual text itself the way it is in the CSB. (I have not found this phrase used in the actual text of the ESV, but it may well show up there in a future edition, even though the ESV was initially produced in order to get away from the gender-neutral NIV, which had already been published in Britain in the 1990s.) There many many more examples of gender neutral usage in these modern versions, including the CEV, the NRSV, GW, and the NLT. The charge that English is a "sexist" language and that the generic masculine needs to be abolished began with a few radical American feminists in the early 1970s. The earliest document that I know of that used gender neutral language is Humanist Manifesto II, published in 1973. From there this political program spread to colleges, universities, mainline denominations, and then to evangelical denominations, first with the evangelical higher educational institutions, seminaries, and later on with individual churches and finally Bible versions. The Consultation on Ecumenical Hymnody has also been involved in getting rid of "sexist" language in hymns and Christmas carols, although the traditional words continue to be reproduced by those who like good English. Since many churches no longer sing hymns, this project has had less influence than has the campaign against the generic masculine in Bibles.
@JackmeriusTacktheritrix-0005 жыл бұрын
@Thomas Jefferson - Thank you for your detailed response. I certainly understand where you’re coming from, but there is another side to that coin. To get trivial matters out of the way, I was most interested in the HCSB->CSB comparison since I use the CSB, and is the main focus of this video. In both versions, Hebrews 12:7 is 100% identical. Also, in Matthew 4:9, the only difference is the lack of the capital “h” in the word “him;” nothing more. Genesis 3:15 only changes “seed” to “offspring.” So I’ll remove those three verses from your list, as they have nothing to do with the topical premise. Concerning all other of your aforementioned verses, the changes from the masculine “brethren” and “man” respectively to “brothers and sisters” and “human/person,” may seem feminist but only if your brain tends to look at things with a political slant as opposed to intention of translation. The updated words do absolutely nothing to change the meaning of the verse. In fact, I think the updates do a better job of making absolutely clear for the common reader, to whom the author is speaking. Inclusivity is not always a bad thing, as the uninformed reader might potentially read the Bible and think God is only addressing males. As long as the words used do not change the meaning of the verse and can still be taken in context both literally and consistently, I don’t see any reasonable objections to the CSB version’s updates. Language changes over time, so the Bibles should keep up as well.
@thomasjefferson65 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I haven't had the time to do an in-depth comparison of the two, but from what I have read, the HCSB is certainly to be preferred. It is already in perfectly understandable modern English, and did not need to be changed. These changes reflect, I think, the theological changes going on in the Southern Baptist Convention, which seem to me to be more and more liberal. The HCSB is now regarded as "hopelessly sexist" and an impediment to the entrenchment of politically correct Feminist English. Like the old NIV, the HCSB has to go Out of Print.
@JackmeriusTacktheritrix-0005 жыл бұрын
@Thomas Jefferson - no problem my friend. I appreciate all you said. No doubt some people will think anything is sexist but I’m certainly not one of those people. I see the words at face value when they are meant to be taken as such. Thanks for your response!

. Sorry not a fan of the ESV. Font is way too small. And if they say large print they are not. How is large print compared to other translations there is no comparison on font & print. I've tried contacting Crossway many times to have better large or giant print Bible's. I guess they are not worried about it. So I choose to use any other translation.

The things I don't like about the CSB. Well to start with the CSB leaves out 16 verses that's included in the HCSB, NKJV and the KJV. Including one of the most important verses in the New Testament: Acts 8:37, And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart you may.” And he replied, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” Another reason why I like the HCSB over the CSB is that the CSB has became more "gender neutral". when a revision was released last fall, a number of the same “gender-neutral” elements that the SBC previously condemned were inserted into its own translation. The CSB now translates the term anthropos, a Greek word for “man,” in a gender-neutral form 151 times, rendering it “human,” “people,” and “ones.” The previous edition had done this on occasion; the new revision adds almost 100 more instances. “Men of Israel” becomes “fellow Israelites;” when discussing Jesus’s incarnation the “likeness of men” becomes “likeness of humanity.” The CSB translates the term adelphoi, a Greek word for “brother” in a gender-neutral form 106 times, often adding “sister.” “Brotherly love” is translated “love as brothers and sisters.” The gender-neutralizing pattern is also present in its translation of the Old Testament. For instance, where the NIV “gender-neutral” revision uses the term “human” or “humanly” for a masculine term, the CSB concurs with a “human” “humanly” or “human being(s)” 67 times. As the CSB translates the Hebrew term ‘dm (the word for adam), the generic “man, men,” it uses gender-neutral language of “human(s), humanity, human kind, people, person(s)” 242 times. The CSB also uses the term “mortal” or “mere mortal” to replace a masculine term 6 times. Numerous other instances of gender-neutral translations of masculine terminology. In my opinion the CSB update has ruined the HCSB. Unfortunately the HCSB is no longer in print but, thank goodness you can still find on apps and websites like You Version and Bible Gateway. Another new translation which is growing in popularity is the Modern English Version (MEV). For people who prefer the HCSB, NKJV and the KJV the MEV is worth looking into.
@dreamlabmc3 жыл бұрын
Here's my petty little gripe. The word "Aramaic" is not in the Greek NT. Jesus and Paul spoke Hebrew. The inspired Greek NT says so. So it annoys me when they say Jesus and Paul spoke Aramaic. Modern Archaeology assumes that they spoke Aramaic because of "discoveries" but the original scripture itself NEVER uses the word "Aramaic". The HSCB translated the word Ἑβραΐδι correctly as Hebrew not Aramaic. The CSB gets it wrong.

I'm sure they knew Aramaic, but for sure all religious instruction would have been in Hebrew. The clunkiness of the "Greek" in the NT is because of the Hebrew thought behind it, NOT Aramaic.

Brock Childers, I was going to but the CSB until I saw how many errors are in it, I'm surprised that your Pastor lets you use it. Go on youtube and you'll see all the errors.

Thanks for watching and the comment. I am the pastor if my church so I didn't need anyone to let me use it. Thanks for suggesting using KZbin as a tool to check out how many errors are in this translation. Ill look into that.

@@michaelbchildersable The CSB like all modern translations is compiled by Catholics and Calvinist's. and you can see their influence in the modern translations, For example, because Catholics don't believe Mary had other children, they left "Firstborn" out of Mt 1: 25. And say Peter was the Rock or Peter in Jn 1: 42. instead of the Aramaic word Cephas, and it's meaning, "a Stone". Calvinists leave Saul's, [Paul's] will out of Acts 9: 6, because they don't believe mankind as a free will. The CSB comes from the erroneous Alexandrian text and leaves lots of verses out of the Bible.

@@michaelbchildersable The best and truest translation is the Thomas Nelson NKJB

Let me guess... I should switch to the one and only "true" bible, the KJV 1611?
@dr.alanhales5443 жыл бұрын
@@michaelbchildersable I'm not a KJV only, I'm a TRUTH only. The KJV and the NKJV have the Biblical truths in them and the first [Very earliest] disciples quoted from the Textus receptus, which the KJV is translated from. Whereas all modern translations come from the Alexandrian text which leave Biblical truth out.

It's a corrupt Bible translated from a corrupt manuscript. Does it have Acts 8-37? Ask why that particular verse is taken out . And several others. Do you really think watering down God's word helps young people? Please show me what verses don't make sense that the csv or hcsv fixed

@michaelbchildersable there is no opinion on God's word it's either 100% right or wrong. Jesus is the Word John 1, so it has to be perfect. Dig into what I'm saying, prove me wrong. Dig into Wescott and Horts' beliefs. The men who came up with all modern translations. What were the first words Satan spoke? "Hath God said." A tiny slither of doubt is all it takes. As a minister, you're responsible for these kids' souls. Really think long and hard about that. Please pray about this don't just take my word, which I know you won't lol. But seriously, pray for God to show you, and I promise he will.

@Lance.West4 bro... listen, I have had many run-ins with kjv only folks. I have studied the issue thoroughly. I do not have time to debate this issue with a person I don't know online. Thanks for your concern but I must get back to writing my sermon for Sunday. I have been in ministry 13 years now. I pastor a church and spend most of my time in biblical study and doing the work of ministry. You know, preaching the gospel , leading people to repentance and faith in Jesus, baptism, and discipleship. I understand that you don't know who I am and assume I have no knowledge concerning the King James argument. Thank you for your edifying words that are seasoned with salt. I'm sure all you say and do bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Blessing to you
