Hey folks, I'm a day late getting this vid uploaded. But for good reasons! Stay tuned for some vids where I meet up with Nate Webber from ALONE Season 8 and Jordan Jonas from season 6 to talk about wilderness adventures. In this video I give a few quick thoughts on my buck from episode 6 and read a few passages from the new book I'm working on. Traditional bowhunting is a huge part of my life and I've taken a lot of big game animals with my selfbow. But nothing can quite compare to the feeling of seeing that young buck laying there in that grass!
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!
Big thanks to our partners who help support these videos!

Having never watched Alone until now, I find myself rooting for the guy who amazes me with every episode, Clay Hays. Your construction of the smokehouse was perfect (saying that not knowing if that grizzly which walked through the camp left it alone). Your videos are a true source of information to those of us just beginning to make bows (and I am 78). Let's hope that the book is authored by the winner of Season 8 of Alone !!!

When I started watching Clay Hayes' recaps of the show, I thought that there was a possibility that he would be the winner However, I thought also thought that that was not necessarily so, because he's a woodsman and boyer who had made videos for KZbin before, and this was a natural follow up. He also has written books about bow making. So writing a book about his experience on the show didn't signal for me necessarily that he had won the show.

Still-hunting requires moving through the woods quietly and with stealth. Doing that in grizzly bear territory require guts, grit, and a bit of insanity. You da man Clay.

Well, the moment you mentioned Stoicism Philosophy I googled it. Sounds extremely interesting. I'm 63 and have watched Alone since Season 1, and I love learning something new all the time! I'm rooting for you! I actually thought Nate would have a chance at the win next to you, but he couldn't get food. One or two season's ago, one of the female contestants showed how to safely carry and ember from your firepit to another area......I want to see it again.....I was blown away. I love how all of you show us simple secrets! Anyway.....Best of Luck..... you know by now if you won or not....I think you do!

Thanks for expanding on the buck kill scene. We will be watching the rest of the season to see how smoking and hanging onto the meat goes. With Nate Tapping with hunger and health issues, you are best-positioned to hang in for the win. Theresa seems to have her situation in hand, although we are not seeing her harvesting fish or game. The two other remaining fellas seem to be having difficulty with sourcing food. Losing the cranberries had to be a blow. Biko seems to get a fish once in a while but he also seems to be living on stored fat metabolism.

The show could be much better if the participants were allowed to take whatever they wanted to fill an 80 lb pack plus a rubber raft/kayak or canoe and a SAT phone,. . If they wanted a 44 magnum, fine. Fishing gear, fine. A Bic lighter, fine. They could stuff it with freeze dried food if they wanted. To give them a fair chance at killing game, give each person a .308/12 gauge over and under that could kill any game plus protect themselves against dangerous animals. Getting eaten by a predator is a needless and unnecessary risk. Remember, the French Voyageurs took whatever they needed. Nobody told them "you cant take that". It would make the show more about the ability to survive and less about who can better withstand slow starvation. The producer could put a 180 day limit on the show, and then judge who fared the best. I know that would cut into their profits but it would make a much better show IMO.

I saw it all coming in episode 5. Great job again Clay! From what you read Your book sounds great! The activist type of people drive me crazy about killing animals and drilling for oil. People dont realize or care to realize where products come from or what they wouldn't have if animals didn't get killed to better their lives to give them those fast food burgers or from the oil perspective you could say the bottle holding their fancy water or the laundry detergent or shampoo they use for that matter, all of which have petroleum products in them and couldn't be possible unless people like yourself and myself weren't willing to go out and take that job on a drilling rig to get that precious oil or kill animals to feed and clothe their families. And those people don't realize we don't kill for sport or to be barbaric and the drilling rigs I've worked on leave the land just as good or better than we found it. Sorry about the rant.

Question for you, Clay. There was a scene of you taking in the view of a double rainbow and it made me wonder, did you always have your bow nearby, just in case of a bear issue or in case a lucky shot at some other game animal came your way, or did you tend to leave your bow behind in favor of pepper spray? Your comments about hunting were spot on. Hunting as a means of providing food is, practically, infinitely more humane than the government-managed meat industry, involving such things as disgusting feed lots, cramped stalls or cages, diets of chemically treated and processed food pellets, nerve racking slaughter houses, the list goes on and on. If through hunting you save yourself a trip to the grocery to buy meats in styrofoam platters, your hunting has yielded life-affirming, positive good. Finally, ep. 6 was just awesome. It was all you, honestly. Colter was certainly notable for his continued ingenuity with fishing, but this episode seemed like more of a setup for him for future scenes.

I've watched History Alone sense Season 1 when it first came out. I've always been a little irked with the hunting/fishing situations. I've never felt that this show gives a realistic look at what it would really look like to survive with the skills of a hunter gatherer, do to having to be confined to country/state hunting and fishing regulations. Like on this season I believe someone said that your not allowed to fish with live bait and you cant kill the grizzlies. Just these two limiting factors up the difficulty level to crazy high in my opinion. I also bet that you were not allowed to use primitive traps to capture large game animals and who knows how many other hunting and fishing relations you guys had to work with. With in the realm of this being a competition and everyone having to survive with in the same guidelines, I believe this is fare and l love this show!!! But I do not feel that this competition really give us a true look at what survival / thriving really looks like with out being handy capped by society. I bet you would have went in to this competition with a whole different strategy if you didn't have regulations to deal with. I cant wait to see how you deal with keeping your food safe!!!

I'm not an anti hunter, I grew up trapping, hunting fishing, etc., I doubt many people alive have trapped as many red fox as me, or killed the variety of wild life..I still eat fish I catch while in the back country and will still eat a duck, porcupine, grouse or beaver while spending extended time in the back country..That being said I do have issues with the culture of hunting that I grew up in, when the kill and the animal fuels a misplaced ego, and the whole "trophy" hunting thing..We do a fair job at regulating hunting in America/western civilization..I've been to many countries where that just isn't the case..And it wasn't the case here not long ago..Everything on Earth happens in cycles, everything..We have killed 60% of the planets wildlife on Earth in just the last 5 decades, and 99% going back a few thousand years..Every civilization to ever exist, has been a losing race, to discover remedies, for the predicaments that they produce, bar none..I see our civilization coming apart at the seams for a variety of reasons, and entering the next cycle, resulting in the killing of what remains..There are no answers to such predicaments, but it gives me pause to kill wild animals directly, when our whole system kills them indirectly for our food supply, energy system, agricultural system, mining and manufacturing, and our unsustainable population..

Venison is about as "green" as you can get. The flatulence of ruminants (cattle) in feedlots is a major contributor of greenhouse gasses. By eating venison, you are reducing our dependence on feedlot cattle while, at the same time, you are taking another ruminant out of the flatulence equation. Venison is sustainable, renewable, non-GMO, organic, field to table, and gluten free! In Pennsylvania, taking a deer is one less deer to hit with your car (talk about your tragic, horrific ways to die from the deer's perspective) effectively lowering auto insurance rates. What's not to love? Congratulations! Glad I found the channel. God's richest blessings to you and your family.

I took a look at ALONE … which is a different take on life & practice in the wild, but it’s your personal channel, your low key attitude & humble presence that I find incredibly inspirational. Thank YOU Mr Hayes for making time in your life to continue these great episodes & yes I looks forwards to getting your book when it comes out. I stumbled across Alone season 8 and just finished watching. Never seen the show until now. I’m blown away. Being someone who loves nature but has never had to survive in it, the show was absolutely eye opening. I truly admire your and all the contestants’ skill and fortitude as survivalists. I had a feeling from the beginning you probably would be the one to win. You just had such a natural way with nature- like you were one with it. It came intuitively to you and you had such excitement for it. And when you got the buck, I thought, omg he’s definitely going to win now. I was absolutely amazed and inspired by your journey, not just your skill as a survivalist and hunter, but also by your wisdom and heart. It touched me so much when you described wanting to inspire your oldest son not to be so easily defeated. The analogy you used of chipping away at the tiny pixels within the big picture was so beautifully put. Such a great way to make the point that if you just keep working at something and don’t give up, you’ll succeed. As a big picture thinker myself, those words were truly touching. I know my comment is a year late but, congratulations! And thank you for being such an inspiration!!!

I just happened to watch this episode last night on netflix. As a fellow hunter I think I truly felt the emotion you felt when you successfully harvested your buck. Here in New England tracking and still hunting are very popular but not with a traditional bow. I have tracked, still hunted and spot and stalked deer before but never with a primitive weapon. You have inspired me to give it a try. I have hunted with and possess a recurve. It may be time to dust it off. Your channel happened to pop up in my feed this morning so I am now subscribed. 👍🏹

Hi Clay! I'm reading your book, "Surviving Alone." I am at this part in chapter 12, young Buck. I had just read the passage in the book on page 68, that you read in this video about the Buck, that ends, "... I feel indebted to this animal." You say in the video that you were writing this book at that time. I noticed the sentence that you read in the video after the sentence I quoted above was not familiar. I didn't remember reading that. So, I checked in the book, and that last sentence you read about, "How many anti-hunters..." was omitted. I imagine that this was an editorial decision. What can you tell us about that? It's understandable that, however true that statement is, that it may have been decided that it was a little too negative, and/or maybe taking away a little from conveying the euphoric sense of this paragraph about how you felt at that moment. What are your thoughts on this?

Thou not a vegan myself, am trying to eat a lot less meat. To walk thru the forest and not have wildlife run from us, could be possible some day. What an experience that would be to then be able to live so intimately with them. Until then, let's do away with domestic meat, where the animals do not live free, where there might be some redeeming value, of taking a wild animal for food (not for sport) if needed, who has at least experienced an existence of some freedom. Animals like bison, deer, etc... Time to stop cremations and burying us in cemeteries , where we cannot return the favor to other animals.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Your comment about not having animals run from us brings Yellowstone national park to mind. There, you can do such things. As for living intimately with wildlife, I believe we can do that while filling our natural role as predator. Elk run from wolves just as they do from me.

A 25 yard shot with a traditional bow is easy to miss. Your skill level must be very high. Ishi would undoubtedly be impressed..

Did at least one contestant not climb a tree with their bow to hunt, or am I getting it mixed up with the previous season?

Well done! Hey can you talk about where you saw sign and had the shot? We know about where you were on the lake, it would be interesting where and how far you had to go. Your quote was great, but I will say that when I was a kid and my dad took us backpacking, I was pretty happy with the hamburger at the choke and puke on the drive home. Not the same, but I get a glimpse. Cheers!

I was rooting for you the whole way Clay, and I knew as soon as you found tracks that you would kill a dear. I have been watching youre videos for a few years now. I bought youre bow building book, and have built five bows now, and am currently building my sixth from iron wood. I would like to thank you for the inspiration to take on a brand new hobby. I have rifle hunted all my life but I will be trying to score a deer with my best bow next fall.

I’m not exactly sure. I guess I had about 2.5 miles of beach, then back from there another 2 miles or so.

**** Why not build a log raft to go to the other side of that river to scout and better chance to fish. Park your log raft in the middle of the lake/river will improve your chances.

I loved both of the other books. So Ill enjoy this next one. You have a gift with linguistics. It is like looking at a beautiful rainbow over a lake at the end of a sucessful day. You paint the concept with words. my Dad does that and He has a Doctor's degree. Just one question about the pics on the cover of the books shows you as a Lefty and the other shows you drawing Right handed. And In the book you describe making a Lefty bow for your friend out of a wonderful piece of Osage, stating you will never be able to shoot it properly. Ambi or just a mirror image picture? Keep making a difference.

It was so exiting to watch you getting this buck! Congratulations! Down in 10 seconds?! That's amazingly quick, isn't it? I'm so curious how the smoking went. Did you cut all the meat up into fine stripes or did you have bigger pieces for long term smoking as well?

I've only recently come across your channel, Clay - first with your archery and bowmaking videos, then with your bushcraft videos, and now with Alone. Some of the points you make in this video, about the flame of life and how it is transferred from lifeform to lifeform through death, really struck a chord with me, especially what you said about whether non-hunters feel "indebted" to their leather shoes or their fast-food burgers. I'm not a religious person, but ever since first hearing that in this video, I have been saying a quick word of silent thanks before every meal to the animals and plants that have given up their flames so that mine may burn a little longer. Thank you for this, and for all the content you have posted thus far, and I'm looking forward to more.

I think when the buck went down, you gave a "Ohh thank the lord!" look, and they used that as a cliff hanger, because it also looks like a disappointed look without context. I can only imagine the pressure, gratefulness, and thankfulness, when you knew that buck was down. Fellow hunters know how amazing it is to get a deer, even more so with a bow, Wayyy more so with a traditional bow, when you Need it for food. Can't even imagine
