I loved this book but that angsty love triangle really bugged me. It struck me as random and unecessary. I wish too that we had gotten some more explanation with the world building like why they have all these traditions and why royal girl triplets are born every generation. I wanted a bit more there.

Same. I really liked this series so much but I also feel like the whole concept of having triplets for every generation is lacking in explanation other than the goddess deciding it should be like that. Its bothers me when I think about it but overall, its a good book.

I also picked up a copy of the book at BEA/BookCon and was able to be a participant in the Epic Reads roundtable with Kendare Blake. She discussed the book and how she came up with the idea based on how the Queen Bee of a hive comes into power-which I thought was really interesting! I honestly loved the book and am anticipating the release of "One Dark Throne" on September 19, 2017! And yes it is due to be a trilogy!

Yaaaaayyyyy I'm so excited to read this book I just got it yesterday! Not too happy about the love triangle though.... if there are already so many different relationships going on then that's definitely not necessary. Either way I'm really looking forward to getting to know all three of the queens! :)

Your review completely resonates with mine! I totally agree with the love triangle thing. Every time I would read about it I would feel so uncomfortable and awkward like I was thrown in the middle of it. And the ending was so great. When I read the last few chapters every event was painted in my head with the most vivid image, it was like I was watching TV!

I loved Three Dark Crowns. I was also surprised by the characters because I had ideas of what they would be like going in and I was completely wrong. Arsinoe was my least favorite but I didn't hate her by any means. I actually didn't hate the love triangle which I was surprised by. It certainly didn't add anything but I wasn't rolling my eyes at it in the way that I normally would. The ending definitely blew me away! I was not expecting anything that happened at the very end.

Now it just seems like authors add them to create pointless drama when they can just work with what they already have.

I enjoyed this book (it wasn't fantastic, but I enjoyed it). I unfortunately figured out the end twist pretty quickly, but I still had fun reading it. The skipping around in perspective was really nice - it made the pacing a bit faster, and you really got a sense of what was at stake and how far people were willing to go in order to support their queen sister!

I felt the same way about the love triangle - I wasn't entirely sure why it needed to happen because it didn't really add any more tension to an already tense situation. The last part of the book was definitely my favourite as it geared up to the second book. I ended up giving it 3.5 out of 5 stars just because the constant change in perspective at the start made it difficult to really get invested in the story. I can't wait to see where the author takes the series though. Should be interesting!

Spoilers***** I have soooo many thoughts. I think the forced love triangle was because Arsinoe burned the charm thing Jules mom was making. I don't think it was really executed well, though. . I have some theories on Pietyr and Katherine. I shipped Pietyr and Kat so hard, so I might be pushing it. BUT. There's a really rare gift that the "warrior gift" or something. And I think Katherine has that. And I really hope Pietyr somehow knew that and shoved her down the hole to prove his point.(???) idk. Or maybe someone was controlling him, the way Jules controls the animals. BECAUSE HE FRICKIN LOVED HER.

About the Pietyr throwing Katharine into the hole thing (that sounds wrong) I think he did that bc Pietyr KNEW about the Rolanth Temple's plan about sacrificing Katharine & Arsinoe so Mirabella can be crowned queen, so maybe that's why? If Arsinoe would have been killed by the priestesses, that would leave Katharine and Mirabella. Katharine, with barely, almost none of her gift to protect her, would have no chance winning against Mirabella, making her next to be severed and sacrificed. Pietyr probably knew Katharine had no way of winning anyway, and decided it would be a better more "peaceful" death if she was thrown into the hole rather than getting her limbs cut off and being thrown into the ocean. This might be why he regretfully says sorry before throwing Katharine. Honestly I think Kendare made Pietyr and Katharine's romantic relationship a bit too cliche' for my liking, but I always liked the idea of Pietyr getting all yandere mode when Katharine falls for a suitor but hey dat's just me

Late comment, but, if Arsinoe & Katharine's gifts really were reversed, wouldn't Katharine already have a familiar? I think she's gift less but it could be that she wasn't raised around naturalists in Wolf Spring. Then again Arsinoe successfully ingested poison with no experience or training in her life.

Sadly though, Sweetheart died. In the beginning of the book it stated that the Arrons got Katharine a new snake that was trained the same way bc they found the real Sweetheart dead in one of the corners of the kitchen.

A bit dumb question, considering the third crown on the cover, but are there a lot of snakes? Because I can see them coming out of the third crown and I absolutely hate them. I can always get a different edition with a different cover, but I can't go pass the story if there are a lot of these creatures in it.

@@elio4463 I absolutely agree. I found Mirabella's character to be really bland and dull despite the fact that she's the strongest and prettiest of the three. Other than her profile description I found nothing interesting about her. Side note: Joseph is a pig.

I went into this book so excited cause the plot sounded so interesting. However, the extreme length of time it took to get to anything of real substance happening, the forced love triangle, the huge amount of teen angst, and the melodrama nearly ever step of the way made this book unbearable for me. I was not aware this was going to be a series so the closer and closer I got to the end of the book the more upset I was becoming because I was seeing that there was no way anything would be properly resolved in this book. I ended up giving this book 2/5 and I don't plan on continuing with the series once the sequels come out.

I think because the way she was raised Katherine will be the best queen and be willing to make tough decisions she would be the best choice in my opinion had Petyre not pushed her into the place and messed everything up because she is really a sweet girl and I'm sure Natalie would have helped with any tough decisions she couldn't make on her own Arisone wouldn't do well simply because the standard Queen's are held to she doesn't like that but she's a queen she kinda has to act like it she would prefer to run wild like a common person but she isn't she's a queen and queens have to act a certain way and have a queenly image she just wouldn't like being a queen because of her personality Maribelle would also be a good queen but I don't want her to win simply because she was raised as the only "real" queen also she would probably have the temple whispering in her ear and that doesn't sound appealing to me I feel like that wouldn't be good for a queen to rely on the temple too much or at all actually the temple should be neutral This is all just my opinion if you don't like it feel free to respond if not cool it doesn't effect my life either way
