So much of the history of Africa has been buried or dismissed except for the Egyptians, which for some reason some folks don't consider African. We won't go there. Anyway thanks again. Thank you Thoughty 2!!!! I was kind of surprised to see you cover this. I'm impressed beyond words. I did a report on this years ago and was blown away with what I found out in the process. THIS really should be a movie, after being published as a book. I found out that there was an English man, back in those days, who reportedly visited Timbuktu and wrote that it was the absolute safest place he'd ever been in all of his days of travel. He said he could walk their streets at night and had no fear of anything. The people were said to be very meek and polite. He attributes that to the leader who made sure at least to things were expected of every inhabitant: be fully educated and be conscience of the Supreme leader...it was not him, it was God. The core values of those who accepted him as their ruler were based on the intangibles and at top of that list was their fear (awe) of God.

I come from Mali, and we learn this when we are kids. King Musa abolished slavery, because he believed in equal rights. He was very generous with is wealth, which is probably part of the reasons why the empire died. It's also believed that he sent many ships with soldiers in them to go travel the world, and some landed in the Americas and mixed with the natives in there and bring their cultures there.

Yeah, too bad this isn't one of those occasions. Because Jeff Bezos is definitely richer than Mansa Musa ever was. Even if Mansa Musa had 100 tons of gold, which is rather unlikely, that's only $5.8 billion. Let's be really optimistic and double that on account of his other assets. That's still only $11.6 billion. Jeff Bezos is currently worth $200 billion. At most, Mansa Musa was the richest man of his time, but even that's unlikely because the emperors of China, Persia, and India, and the Ottoman sultans, and the tsars of Russia ruled, and essentially owned, much larger and richer domains than Mansa Musa. The fact of the matter is that Mansa Musa's kingdom was fairly small and mostly desert, while Russia and China are vast countries with far more resources. This video is PC bullshit.

I've read about the Mansa Musa. He was aware of the inflation he caused by giving away so much gold. So on the way back home from Mecca he did something really clever: he borrowed much of the gold back. By taking the gold off the market its value was allowed to settle, and then he repaid the recipients in more reasonable periodic installments. Also you said that Musa's predecessor went on his trip west without evidence of there being land there. This is not entirely correct. At that point it had been known for quite a while in both Europe and Africa that "something" should be there on the other side of the ocean, even if they didn't know exactly what it was. My opinion is that the Malian voyage could have been succesful if only they would have had better ship building technology. The Europeans (Columbus) only managed to cross the Atlantic (and survive) almost two centuries later (1492) when their technology had sufficiently evolved. So in a way the Malians were ahead of their time, but then they missed the boat.

A lot of people are acting like he isn’t taught in schools. He is actually in the curriculum, where he is taught in the class “world history” that is taken in 10th grade. People just may not remember him. It was taught that in his pilgrimage to Mecca, he affected Egypt’s economy with all the money he spent there.

He did not do it through making events or holidays or whatever, he did it the natural way, which is to give immediately when you see someone in need. And even then, he was still the richest man. @@timmilgram They were not 'slaves'. They were courtiers and they were very well paid. IN GOLD NUGGETS. Many of the citizens would have been very proud indeed to have been chosen to accompany the emperor on his pilgrimage to Mecca. It was considered a great honour, and so it wasn't about forcing people to accompany the king as his 'slaves'. Quite the opposite. If the emperor had said he wanted 50,000 men to accompany him instead of 12,000, thousands would have gladly joined the retinue. The Mali Empire was a very just place where the people had rights, were educated, and were prosperous.

@@22airjordan1 To be fair are there other possibilities like the Māori reached South America instead. They are less dark skinned then the people of Mali but they certainly had the means to visit and we do know they somehow got their hands on sweet potatoes so we do have some evidence they visited at least once (unless some sailors from south America instead sailed to the nearest Maori settlement (Easter island). There are actually some genetic signs that Australian aboriginals reached Argentina as well which is odd since we don't see them as seafarers but a group of native people there have genetic markers they only share with aboriginals (who have a rather unique genetics). It is certainly possible that at least some of those 3000 ships got to south America (likely Brazil) but unlike the other 2 cases have no solid evidence of it yet popped up. No genetic markers, no clearly defined items from Africa pre-Columbus have been found and no South American Goods showed up in Africa either (at the time at least, there are pretty good evidence for South American goods in ancient Egypt but those wares were probably traded between north America - Berings strait - Siberia - China and the silk road so it is very doubtful any Egyptian actually set a foot in America). Anyways, all these cases are being argued by historians and archaeologists. In Egypt's case, maybe there existed African or Asian versions of tobacco and cocaine but that seems very unlikely. others believe in direct trade which also seems rather unlikely to me at least. Trading expensive goods really far is my bet there at least. Note that a few years ago many scientists doubt the tests for these 2 drugs in mummies but they have been made by several teams with different mummies so most accept them today. The aboriginal thing is weird, no one can explain that but if they arrived they did so way back in time. But to be fair is their arrival in Australia rather baffling too. We used to think they arrived there about 30 - 45 000 years ago but clear evidence date them back in Australia at least 65 000 years ago now and there are a possible site claiming 120 000 years ago but that one seems impossible and few scientists believe in it. Still, 5 years ago we were pretty sure that homo sapiens existed only in Africa until 45 000 years ago and there are several sites over 50 000 years old in Australia so that is certainly wrong, there is only a single verified site over 57 000 years so we certainly need more digging and dating in Australia too. I guess we have to hope that they actually find a Mali artifact in Africa to really be sure if they reached it or not. It would make a good episode here, that is for sure. Humans in the past traveled and traded far wider then what we used to think.
