@Thoughty2 You briefly mentioned the mining aspect, but is important to note that both rai stones and Bitcoin are backed by "proof of work". For the stones, that is the process of mining them and crafting them, for Bitcoin that's the means of expending large amounts of electricity to power computers that search through a vast numberset for solutions that satisfy the algorithm and award a "block" of Bitcoin.

Honestly, I doubt any society really relied on bartering. Instead, it was more likely if someone in your group needed something, then you gave it to them or someone else just gave it to them with the understanding that they would "pay it back" or "pay it forward" whenever you or that other person needed something. Most early humans were fairly self sufficient so simply giving each other things and helping out is what made a society work. No need for barter or money, and even in many villages, families and close friends today, debts between are forgiven or cancelled out as a matter of process without the need for money to change hands. Trade between different villages or cultures in a larger nation-like region or between different nations and empires was far more likely the origin of money as these would be economic transactions between groups that were mostly separate otherwise and so did not have the normal enforcement of cultural mores and peer pressure to remain honest. Then as civilizations and cosmopolitan interactions grew more complex, money would crucial to maintain the development of a much larger economy. However, even in these cultures, debt forgiveness - the jubilee - was necessary to maintain the social bonds as everyone knew unending debt would eventually swallow the entire economy and degrade the social connections.

@Quinn O'Shaughnessy I see your point, but the main difference is that land has a practical use, while the stones just stood there serving no real purpose, representing just the idea of ownership. In my uni speech class we had to give presentations on an aspect of our culture (I live in Hawaii, in a diverse area). One of the other students was a woman who was born and raised in Palau, and immigrated only 3 years earlier at age 18. She talked about the “coin stones” as she called them in English, I forget the native word for them. She said they were primarily used house moving. If a man was to marry a woman and wanted to buy her house from her family (the family could still live there, but ownership would change to the newlyweds) he could use a coin stone. If he didn’t have a coin stone inherited from his family, he’d have to negotiate an expensive trade with the bride’s father, like gold jewelry and rare natural and manmade items. But generally speaking, every household at one coin stone that was continuously passed down the lineage as they moved. It was expected the new husband was to move out of his family’s house and into his wife’s so he had a place of his own, and it was expected he’d use a coin stone for that transaction

Thank you for pointing that out. People want to believe that Rai was used for payments, but even gold never really was used in day-to-day commerce. Honestly this just got me thinking of Fallout’s economy, how originally it was bottles of drinkable water, then as the NCR built itself it, bottle caps became a representative of each bottle of fresh water. Now of course in 76 we do see caps being used as well, predating the NCR’s bottle cap economy. This can however be explained by the interesting surplus of Nuka Colas in Appalachia due to the local bottling plant. The caps would similarly represent the value of a nuka cola, of course in game they still do go for two caps, rather than one as these are seen as more of a luxury. We also know that pre-76 Appalachia did pool together their resources and tried to set up their own market system prior to the scorched plague outbreak. The raiders of The Top of the World seemingly were eager to adopt this system as well, given many of them were the wealthy upper class of the pre-war era. But as we see in Wastelanders, Gold or rather Gold Bullion, is becoming the currency of Appalachia with treasury notes being a representative note for gold from Vault 79. In the upcoming Steel Reign update we even see the Blue Ridge Caravan, the main trading company of Appalachia, adopting the use of these thanks to their new vendor’s side deals with Smiley, an undercover Secret Service gold bullion vendor who had sold gold for caps in order to implement a set cap to gold ratio, while also buying supplies for the other surviving Vault 79 inhabitants.

I found a similar thing to Rai's coin in my backward. But it's small, It's made of stone and diameter about 2.5 cm. Does anyone have any idea what's it? I googled it and found nothing.

Damn good connection there. I do wonder how many of those people back then said, “Man, I wished I’d got in of that Rye stone trend earlier.” Seeing as how it’s probably one of the most common phrases today...

I lam a big fan of your work Thoughty2...I get excited for every video you put out!! And on top of that, you've talked about My home country Micronesia twice now in your videos...there are truly amazing stories and histories from that place. May I humbly ask you one more time to research what some people consider the 8th wonder of the world? Located in Pohnpei, Micronesia...is a place called NAN MADOL. Ruins from an ancient civilization that people and scientists have yet to figure out how it was built. Some even argue that it could be the gateway to Atlantis. I humbly request you to make this video my guy!

It was a dumb system. If introducing better technology... ehmm hammer and chisel.. screws it.. its shite. But yes.. you'd rather prefer the islanders never get better "tech".

Very clever video, and I see the relationship. Although in the case of Rai stones, the Chief becomes the de facto central banker. And for that matter, the same is true for any other commodity currency - shells, gold, etc.

The romans would often pay in salt. This coined the term "you're worth your salt" peppercorns were also used as currency during this time.

@tenderlointips88103 жыл бұрын
Not as large as I expected. It’s nice to have a site that sends directly to companies versus going to every company and submitting an email request verifying all your information in hopes that they will remove it.

You forgot to mention not only you have to have what someone wants, but you have to be confident you are getting something of the same value. You should also know your time is way more valuable than your data.

I'm surprised you managed to make the comparison to bitcoin without mentioning the phrase "proof of work" which obviously big ass stone discs most certainly are, and is why the introduction of modern tools would cause devaluation.
