They aren't theives per se - they never actually stole anything - but they may be accused of receiving tainted or stolen goods. If you buy a stolen item, you are not a thief yourself, though may be abetting a crime if you know it is stolen. And there is no evidence that all mummies were stolen. Some poor shmuck may have been paid a penny for some mummy he found.

Don't worry. The ancient Egyptians themselves weren't much more respectful to mummies than the victorians were. Graverobbing was so common that finding even a mostly intact tomb has only happened once or twice. And really often the graverobbers would be commissioned by the ancient Egyptian government to take back the riches that were initially buried with the corpses. Turns out burying ungodly amounts of gold and valuables with the deceased on a regular basis is a really quick way to bankrupt a country. Besides, most pharaohs would be beside themselves with joy if they knew that they were still famous and their names were being spoken 3000 years after their deaths. Even if it meant their mummified bodies were moved to a museum. (The bodies are safer there than in the tombs anyways.

They were all someone’s son, daughter, brother, sister, niece or nephew, wife or husband, father or mother, etc. and I agree with you on that. I’ve too always found it disrespectful. Lured here by the title card, which actually does not show a mummy, but a fake mummy found in an attic of the German town of Diepholz. It's a plastic skeleton, painted with lead particle in a glue (to confuse X-ray and CT scanners), a metal arrow shaft inside it's eye socket (from a toy bow&arrow) and a real human skull (probably used by a dentist student for studies in the 1950s). Wrapped up in modern self-adhering bandages, dyed brown by using black tea. And put into a kitschy sarcophagus like wooden box with way too many symbols and cloth. After making sure that this is not a ancient artifact from the outside, the "mummy" was opened and the above fake was discovered, including old potato sacks and modern kitchen tissues.

The dishonor in these "unrolling parties" is horrifying. I can't believe this was allowed to happen! I say give the relics AND mummies back to Egypt. I'm pretty sure that if I was a mummy, I wouldn't want to be gawked at by millions of tourists every year in the British Museum. 😡

The Egyptians believed that the mummified body was the home for this spirit soul. Although they transferred themselves to planets where life is "ten thousand times better than on earth" they still thought it important to mummify their body. The Belt Stars of Orion adjust with the three pyramids on the Giza Level. So with the help of the pyramids, the departing souls travelled to these planets in order to take birth there.
