Thousands of supporters of the Gambia's former leader Yahya Jammeh have demonstrated in the capital Banjul, demanding his return.
Jammeh ruled The Gambia for 22 years, during which human rights organisations accused him of repressing and torturing his opponents.
Since losing the presidential election to current leader Adama Barrow in 2016, he has been living in exile.
Al Jazeera's Nicolas Haque reports on the growing calls for his return.

I'm not Gambian, but it's sad to see all these Gambians rallying for Jammeh, a brutal despot who was in power for 22 years and amassed so much personal wealth at the expense of poor Gambians. Is Barrow that bad compared to Jammeh? Even if you don't like Barrow, are there no other educated, progressive Gambians that you can choose instead of going backwards into an abusive relationship with Jammeh ? What the heck is wrong with us Africans? Come on Gambians move forward. Find someone else if you don't like Barrow, but not Jammeh. Jammeh has had his time. Move on please.

Africans are are always jealous of Thier leaders instead of protecting them, we disowned them. But if you go to Europe, leaders are valued, in America the same thing. China Japan and Russia you name it. Don't you know that this man thinks 20 years ahead of many African leaders. So let's learn to protect our leaders in order to enable future leaders lead well without fear.

Brother Abhishek Priyadarshi, the current government of Gambia restored democracy in the country. Thus Jammeh supporters also have the right to make any peaceful protest that's not against the rule of law. Infact Jammeh coming back to the Gambia would make things easier for the victims to make him face justice. Yes, the Justice minister of the Gambia took Myanmar to ICJ but also makes sure that human rights are not being violated in the Gambia as well. That's why they have no problem with those who claim to be the supporters of Jammeh to protest peacefully even though Jammeh violated human rights and in the same sense that does not mean that Jammeh will not be taken to Justice when he comes back. Thanks for your time.

@Duncan Musanje- u speak like someone they call "mumu". What rubbish u spewed. So u think he will just return home, keep to himself, apologise to the people and refund money he stole? Far from that, l can assure you uf he returned with instability in The Gambia. He had the opportunity of making something good of that country when he was in power but he spawned the chance. He should stay where he is and his corpse returned only when he passes away. He has nothing to offer the country. People should also stop collecting money to demonstrate, they are toying with their futures and that of future generations.

It is totally weird. The former president is a genocidal leader. The new government is good, especially the Justice Minister who have filed a lawsuit against Myanmar to ICJ over genocide conviction. Protecting human rights shall be the most important privilege. Gambia is a very small and poor country with its economy mainly base on agriculture and tourism. The country should be in peaceful conditions to attract more foreign tourists.
