Who’s buried at Grant’s Tomb? Not just a former president and his wife (and dog). A more recent and gnarly history lives at this Upper West Side spot, highlighted by Ted Barrow and the rippers who tested the beveled blocks at this exalted NYC staple.

I absolutely love this series. Not only do you get a history about the spot in general, and some of the important skating events that have taken place there, but you also get a deep dive into the materials that were used to build it, who built it, why they built it, why the ledges and benches and flat spots look the way they do due to the prevailing art style at the time. It's not just a reflection on people skating that spot, it's a reflection on how the spot influenced skaters. It's amazing.

Love this series! I’m a landscape architect and often times people call that material slate but it’s actually Bluestone. In this case natural cleft bluestone which means it has that irregular cleft surface. The alternative would be a thermal finish where they take a torch to it and flame off the imperfections.

I took a trip to NYC a few years ago for my nieces dance competition so I didn't have my skateboard, but we walked by here and i checked it out. Gnarly spot. What was even gnarlier was some drunk lady who somehow fell down the first set of stairs, continued rolling across the flat and then the second set of stairs and ended up like 15 feet away from the last step just laying there howling like a banshee. It was hard not to laugh so i did. She was fine, just completely blasted out of her mind at 9am.
