I think that’s a big part of why so many KZbinrs also start twitch channels, even if they aren’t like known for gaming content or anything like that. Just… playing games live is an easier way to kinda tap into that desire to be authentic. It’s a lot harder to script things you’re doing live

And that's also why, despite mostly losing the manicured "cellophane packaging," it's still even more engaging. We value connection more than we think. I think the word "wholesome" encapsulates this well; just a satisfaction that you get from understanding another human being, or a shared emotion.

I'm also 30 this year, but my social media experience has drifted toward not being actively engaged anymore, despite consuming things like Twitter or YT daily. If someone were to look me up it would probably look like I disappeared around 2016. It was nice hearing your perspective on modern social media, because most of the reason I don't post anywhere is the feeling of "why should I bother? Who is this for?" and the fact that I proof-read everything several times so it all just feels performative, like it wouldn't represent me in earnest. I struggle with the idea of social media being inauthentic, but also realize that I'm probably missing out on a core part of being a modern human by choosing not to participate. It's a conflicted feeling. I've even almost deleted this comment several times while writing it. Anyway, thanks Daniel. This video genuinely got me thinking about things. Also as someone who gets lost in games like Power Wash Sim, the gameplay was super relaxing to watch. Would likely tune in if these types of videos became a regular thing.

26:33 - The short pause right after "...or you're wasting time" here just... hits right. The sound of the mower, the birds... It's nice. It also really solidified the point, that you need to "...drown out by noise, but it feels like it... or you're wasting time". I always feel like I'm wasting time. If I'm not doing something, the doubts and the shame creep in and that little voice in my head says, "you should be working, you lazy lump". But, if I have something going on in the background, (or I'm watching some mindless KZbin shorts for hours), those creeping thoughts stay away. I'm, practically, doing nothing. I'm not progressing any closer to the goals that I've set for myself. But, I'm stimulating my brain just enough that it *feels* like I'm doing things. Or maybe it's just the mindless, buzzing sensation that lulls me into a state of apathy. But it's also dangerous, because after hours of avoiding those thoughts and the feelings that come with them, I'm hit with them tenfold because I come out of my stupor and realize that I just spent six hours sitting in one spot watching KZbin shorts... So to hear someone give words to an experience I have every day, then have a few brief moments to sit with those words and let them interact with those creeping thoughts, I could only describe it as "relief". Relief that I'm not alone in these feelings. Which is weird, because I've *known* that I'm not alone for years. I've *known* that other people also experience things like self-doubt and shame about their past choices. But hearing the words, then sitting with the quiet hum of the mower and the birds chirping, was different than simply *knowing*. I always feel like I'm running; running toward things, running away from things, running around things so I don't have to face them. Those few seconds of quiet made it feel like I didn't have to run. It felt like the immediacy of every second of every day was paused and I could sit; I could breath. I feel like maybe meditation is similar and I, too, should try something like that...

Oh my god. Imagine what it must have been like for the very first human beings who were created and could think all these complex things but for a very long time, they had no way to represent these thoughts, to communicate like we do. I mean, if I have an epiphany or think i thought of something unique or helpful, i immediately tell my older brother. Of course, early men had other ways to communicate but not as meaningfully as we do. Geez. It's a blessing, to be able to tell other people what you think through words. You can't actually make them see what you're seeing, but at least we have the next best thing. What I'm getting at is the fact that we're a lucky generation. We exist in a world where we can express ourselves and the diversity in expression we take for granted is actually the result of thousands of generations, billions of people, talking, writing, reading, sharing their thoughts.

I find what authenticity I can on social media to fill the void that resulted from mental illness. I don't condone my lifestyle of living online instead of IRL, but I'm grateful atm for creators like you who are willing to share content like this. Wow... this felt like therapy, like free therapy. This part: "Meditation is not about getting rid of distractions, it's about getting comfortable with myself and the world; this plane of existence that human beings evolved with.Quite" I'm going write this on a board or something to see it all day, maybe put it on my lockscreen. You never think about it like this, we as a species have evolved to live in a quite world, we were not built for this lifestyle. Our brains literally cannot keep up with the amount of data we receive on hours of scrolling. And the amount of contrasting emotions each video induces. Our brains literally aren't designed to process such a fast pace of data and emotion... We can't not have an online life, okay, at least meditate! Anyways, thanks for this. It was both calming and enlightening. I haven't known your channel for a long while, Daniel, only 4-5 months but I have binge watched all of your videos since the beginning and it makes me feel like I have known you for longer and, it might sound weird, but seeing your journey and growth in your career makes me feel so pround of you as if I know you in real life. And to see this video now, this pure, "authentic" expression of self... I'm so proud to see that my favourite content creator is a person who thinks such deep thoughts and has such values in a world full of shallow people and shallow content... I hope you do more videos like this. I think it's sort of a meditation for yourself too, the way you get to think out loud and mow lawns. I would absolutely listen to you talk about mundane (or important) topics that happen to pop up in your brain every week or so. Authenticity has been my subconscious thought for the past few months as well, particularly regarding how others perceive me and my personality vs how I feel about those things. I tend to ask myself a lot of those questions you were asking yourself, "How much of X activity or behavior is just me? And how much of it is me trying to be seen as someone I may not be?". I could dive into my month long spiral of questioning my identity and really taking some time to introspect on my social interactions and whatnot, but the one thing I've been able to reassure myself with is associating authenticity with a combination of "Intent" and "Honesty". Good (Or at least clear) intentions combined with honest reactions have rarely turned out to be an 'inauthentic' experience for me, whereas I start to feel like I lose some of that authenticity when I compromise one or the other. Btw I care about you too my dude, its oddly relaxing to hear a non "youtuber" voice every now and again if that makes sense?

The ADHD trying to get in the way while you ask yourself, "What am I talking about?" To direct your brain back to the topic you're on is really authentic to someone with a short memory span or with ADHD. The tangent about having a nervous breakdown about the gristle in steak made me feel closer to your experience cause I've absolutely been there. This was a really great video idea. I'm glad I stumbled across it while trying to find background sound while playing the Sims. It really is a whole other world and authenticity is harder to find more than ever. We all have masks we wear for different occasions, and sometimes it's hard to know where the mask ends and you begin. You and your content are making a difference in the world just by each life it touches. I'm proud of the growth you've done on and off screen. You're an incredible content creator and person.

First of all, I love the mic, it looks hilarious. Second, this video honestly helped me understand my fear of doing nothing. Every time I spend time watching youtube and instagram I always feel awful for wasting my time, that I could be doing something better. But seeing Daniel, someone who I consider an ideal with his talent for comedy and music, reassure me and others that its okay to be distracted sometimes is a really nice change of pace from the unrealistic pressure I put on myself and probably many others put on themselves as well. Its nice seeing the funny internet man be so human, something that a lot of other content creators struggle to be. Thank you Daniel, for being a nice, reassuring voice for all of us, even if you dont know any of us at all.

Hey, thank you for speaking openly. It takes vulnerability (what I consider to be bravery) to upload a totally unedited video, let alone one where there are no props or gimmicks. Maybe there is something about turning 30... or something about turning 30 at this point in time that rings some alarm to consider your life in a different way. I recently had the realization that we live in a world where we engage with more strangers than people we are familiar with each day due to social media. Technology develops in the blink of an eye and our education on how to handle it all is so far behind. My closest friends have just gotten used to the fact that I prefer to send voice messages than text. I feel my own need to edit and "polish" as you put it and just can't maintain it with those I'm close to. Perfectionism at its finest. It's so intersting that you point out that we are trying to figure out how to live as cyborgs. That's going to rattle around in my brain for a while. And I find that I am increasingly aware of my own ignorance to the line between presenting me as I am and expressing artistry. I'm a musician and I consider performance something that is me and yet also maleable for my audience. That uncanny feeling when someone says they feel so connected to you based on your art... it's like they know something very intimate and yet something that isn't fully you. Isn't authentic, I guess. Thanks you again for putting yourself out there. Your thoughts have really struck me. I hope you have a lovely day

Would honestly love to see more videos like this. It reminds me of what my friends and I essentially do every week. We pick a night to hang out over Discord, (we're all over the place), and drink together and talk. Usually the conversation turns into something existential, political (polite, of course), or saying that we love each other an undisclosed amount of times. It also feels like a therapy session in a way; we talk about deep things and also not-so-deep things. We've helped each other grow a lot, as well as get through some really rough times. Couldn't ask for anything better. Except, of course, being able to see them in person. Again, would love to see more videos like this. Thanks for making this, Daniel.

This ended up being one of the most calming, *real* conversations/videos/whatever that I’ve seen in a long time. Thank you for making this video ! It was nice hearing YOU and not your creations speaking for you. Your voice is much deeper and I actually felt connected. I am going through a similar thought process right now. What is authentic ? And I am finding, although it might not be like that for everyone, that we really do spend too much time in our heads today. Be it through scrolling and thinking about that new drama in TikTok or KZbin or thinking of how your new video can relate more to people it is very funny, that in pursuit if "being authentic" we do less and less of who we actually are. Thoughts and reality kinda melt into one, but, to borrow a phrase from a video game NPC: none of it is real...Fame, authenticity, happiness, sadness. And it might sound existentially dreadful, but at least for me, it helped to think of it like that because these things really can only affect you as long as you think about them. As long as you make them your own inner reality. But you don't have to. You have a choice. And lately, I try and chose to just exist. Not spending time on thinking how I can just exist peacefully, but just doing so. It was nice seeing you like this and ya know, I care about you too and I want you to be happy in whatever way that means to you ! We live in very complex times where no good are bad exists, only shades of gray. Just how you said, we really can only do our best to figures things out. And I am happy I can be here with you Daniel, to connect through that shared daily struggle ❤

8:00 about that screen time, for me I’m on my phone when I don’t necessarily know what to do or have anything to do; I’ve found picking up a hobby that is flexible and one can go back to whenever they feel like is a great way to spend that time. For example, 3d modeling or sculpting, just from your computer or tablet, or Origami, just something that you can direct your time and energy to when you don’t know what else to do.

authenticity has been very important to me. I'm a trans woman & knowing my identity is sort of like being authentic w/ myself. I'm autistic & I interact w/ the dimension of how much I mask myself vs. unmask myself, both w/ other people but also w/ just myself. I'm ADHD & I navigate between pretending to be more neurotypical in order to survive, & giving myself space for my desired way of being. I'm depressed & burnt out & I'm learning to honor my needs it's about liberation, liberating myself from expectations & learning to hear my authentic preferences

As a 31 year old, everything you are saying all correlates to the rapid advancement of technology. You and I are some of the last people to understand what life is like as a child without a cell phone in our pocket. To be able to communicate and verbalize everything in person. Most people born 2005 and after ( maybe unless poor) only know technology and social media to communicate and to entertain each other/ themselves. We have found a means to use social media/ technology to make ourselves famous, known, and to vocalize as someone who was a nobody to begin with. Authenticity through technology is a luxury these days and you my friend are apart of that luxury. I hope to be like you some day.

I really enjoyed this window into the authentic thoughts of Daniel. Actually hearing you say you care about your audience and that you put a lot of thought into your content and its potential impact in this way is refreshing and believable and meaningful. If you did this every week, I think it would be a comfortable way to create space for yourself away from the scroll and open the door to a deeper connection with the audience members who are here for you, the man behind the content. I'm not a trained therapist like your Elizabeth, but this seems healthy. I'd even say you should record one of these sessions every week but if you feel uncomfortable with sharing what you've said, scrap it without redoing it and just come back the next week. You've gotta have boundaries to protect yourself. But yeah, this is a genuine pleasure, I hope you do it again, no pressure though.

Thank you Daniel for your authenticity. I'm not subscribed to this channel, but have been watching your content now for years, and I am exceptionally glad the algorithm deemed your authenticity worthy of a broader audience. It's something we are lacking a lot in our society today, and I think breaks down a lot of our online communications. People would rather maintain a façade for their followers rather than have a real conversation. Even this comment has been revised by me to have it say exactly what I want. Anyway, thank you for this, and all you have done over the years. Even if it is 'noise' or a distraction from the life around me, you have brought an immense amount of joy to me and many others with your hard work. It does not go unnoticed ❤️

5:42 literally sums up the direction of a lot of youtube vids since ~2020 and onward. I've seen tons of other people cover the "KZbin authenticity" problem but the ultimate answer is just to do what you want. Keep a creative insight and a charismatic personality becaause it's something people can relate to outside the thing they clicked for. I really appreciate what you do, your sketches rarely miss for me and the fact that you're making an attempt to be more personable is just cool. Obviously it's more a one way bridge as you can only ever be so up front via text, but personally I really enjoy this stuff. It's just nice to see. I'll still make an effort to mitigate that bridge problem and say I've been learning how to draw and animate by just starting stupidly ambitious projects from scratch and seeing what I can make of it. Both of these are extremely hard when you have no experience in them, but take the time to learn the solutions to problems as you go and results will show. The "just do it" sort of philosophy. It will probably end poorly the first time but at least it's then experience under your belt to carry forward. Keep it as high quality as you can. Motivation for this type of learning process is about as easy as mounting an anvil as if it were a picture frame, but the lesson is always "eventually". IDK who/if anyone is reading this but hope you have a good day and reminder that people do care about you. Mental health is hard to keep stable these days so just reminding you all to keep that in mind.
let's talk about isolation
