Good video. Will you be recording a video that shows adjustments that can be done to get the thread to roll on the bobbin as evenly as it does on the end of your vid? I find myself having to baby sit the thread as it rolls on the bobbin to make sure it goes back and forth and doesn't bunch up on one side😖.

When sewing Jeans with Denim (medium to heavyweight) on an industrial, Should the bobbin tension be loose or tight? What should the thread tension be, loose or tight?
@undergroundupholstery
@undergroundupholstery 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. A technique that I use is this: Set the bottom bobbin so there is “resistance” but not tension. You want enough resistance so that the bobbin stays positively engaged and doesn’t have slack at any point. I usually just give the string little jerking motions until the bobbin doesn’t continue moving after I tug on it. Once that is set I almost never touch it again and all adjustments are made using the top tensioners. For this, I back the top tension all of the way off and start sewing. It will initially look like a rats nest under the fabric but continue tightening until the stitches are clean and uniform. You will know the top thread is too tight when you see it pulling the bottom thread to the top layer between the needle holes. Once you see this, just back off the tension until the two threads connect in the middle of the fabric. I hope this helps!

@@undergroundupholstery No wonder my machine is screwed up. I could not figure out what I was doing wrong when I could see the bobbin thread on top or vice versa ('i'm assuming this is the issues)...I tried to adjust the tensions but obviously I should have stopped while I was ahead. I have a Yamata 1541S compound walking foot....is this a tension issue? Thanks

My Juki 1508N keeps jamming and breaking thread when I put it in reverse. Any idea why this may be happening? Thank you
@undergroundupholstery

Thanks for watching. I would say that the best thing to check is the spacing between the needle and hook. If for whatever reason the hook doesn’t catch the thread on a pass, then you put it in reverse, the thread will break. The other thing I’ve seen is the thread tension being too tight but I’ve seen it happen time and time again where the hook/needle spacing solves problems you didn’t even know you had!!!

Your video was very helpful. I just purchased the Juki DU 1181n. I have been searching for help for this machine and have been unsuccessful in doing so. Once I have sewn a piece of material and lift the pressure foot, I have to actually TUG at the material to get it loosened. Once I have the material out from under the foot, I notice that there is FOUR pieces of thread that are attached. After pulling at the threads, one comes loose and the other two are still attached ( upper and lower). I'm trying to determine what is causing this issue and HOW to correct it. Would you happen to have any advice ? So far I have been unsuccessful in locating footage that would explain correcting this issue. I have found NUMEROUS videos on threading it. Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! I am glad that you found my video helpful. Did this start happening "all of the sudden"? or has it been doing this since day one of owning the machine? Check the UPPER thread tension. This is a sign of the upper thread being too tight Ok so the issue that you are taking about can be the result of a few things. If your thread is fraying and this issues still occurs, make sure that there are no burrs or sharp edges on the hook of the machine. I had this issue once where the hook was splitting the top thread in half. As a result, half the thread was coming back and getting wrapped around the bobbin. This causes you to be unable to release the thread/ material. Once you release the material and cut the threads, you have multiple threads showing. Check your upper thread tension coming from the spool. I spent hours once on the same issue. I re thread the machine a hundred times only to find out the thread was snagging on the bar that the thread goes over when it comes out of the spool. Also, make sure that that there is not too much space between the needle and hook of the machine. If the hook is not catching the upper thread, this issue will occur. finally, check to make sure your needle is facing the correct way with the "scarf" facing the hook. Here is the link below for the service manual. look at page -33- where it talks about the distance between the needle and the hook. On a side note, when this happens, take the bobbin completely out of the machine and start over. The problem is the lower thread is getting wrapped around the bobbin casing causing this issue. you just need to determine why this is happening. Please keep me posted with what you find. If you have further issues let me know and I will try to post a video. This is a common issue. Sometimes just completely unthread the machine and walk away and these issues mysteriously correct themselves. www.juki.co.jp/industrial_j/download_j/manual_j/du1181n/menu/pdf/instruction_7K.pdf

I had this when I started sewing, funnily enough in many videos I couldn’t find the answer! This is resolved by making sure the needle has passed its highest point and is on its way down with the hand wheel. Then you can lift the presser foot and the problem will have gone. I hope you have solved this as it was a nightmare for me to find the answer!

Hi, I like the video and it was helpful, but I still have a question. I just started at a new upholstery shop and have been using a Juki 1508, the machine frays the thread and it bunches up above the needle until the thread gets so thin it snaps. I have replaced my bobbin with a properly wound one, the first bobbin may have not quite been up to standards and I have also put in a new needle. I have tried threading the machine both ways juki recommends for thick and thin thread, and I have tried different thread but the same thing happens. Could it be the machine is slightly out of time and the needle is barely hitting the hook or something? Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks

first off, CONGRATS! You should be very proud of that undertaking. DONT get discuraged. I am very familiar with this problem. My apologies for the delayed response. The absolute first thing that I would do is verify that the hook has no burrs right on the leading edge/ tip. the cure for this is to take some very fine (8-1200 grit) sand paper and wet it with machine machine oil. take the paper and gently smooth the hook. next, you are going to need to check the actual foot where the needle goes through. Any burrs or edges (especially towards the back or Underside of the hole/ foot) will fray your thread. The third thing is the needle to hook spacing. The distance between the inside of the needle scarf and the tip of the hook should be between .05 - .1 mm. I just eyeball it by turning the machine by hand and making sure the thread catches. I have had to adjust the hook before so it is not uncommon. Just loosen the two screws and slide the hook assembly ever so slightly. Conversely, if the hook is hitting the needle, it will burr the hook causing the same problem. My point being is if the hook is too far away, then the hook will miss the thread loop occasionally causing the thread to wrap itself around the base of the bobbin. its the tension of this that breaks the thread. also check the needle for defects. This machine can use different length needles so if you are using one needle length, when the machine is timed for the other, you will run into this problem. Do you have the "instruction manual"? I promise it isn't a defective machine. when I had this problem the first time I was so discouraged. before I put the machine in the trash, i ended up going page by page checking every adjustment. over ten hours later (and walking away many times I somehow figured it out. I have found out the hard way that the most important thing to upholstery is mastery of the machine. This requires spending hours taking the machine apart and putting it back together. So many times, a 15 minute sewing job has turned into hours troubleshooting problems like this. finally I stopped sewing one day, dissassembled and reassembled a machine using the manual. The week that it took me to do that has saved me in the long run. Please let me know how it is going!
