Thread galling (aka “cold welding”) can cause all sorts of headaches for the ham radio operator or RF tech working around a radio tower or transmitter site. In a nutshell, thread galling occurs when a nut and bolt are fused together thanks to the heat from friction during the tightening process. Galling depends on a few factors, including fastener material and the way the threads are made, either via rolling or cutting. The good news is, galling is easily preventable. Follow along as DX Engineering technical support specialist Michael Murphy shows you exactly how and why galling occurs, and how you can keep galling from harming the fasteners in your ham radio tower installation.
