Threading The Dark Knight as part of a worldwide Roadshow. We were one of 6 or 7 in the world showing all the three on IMAX 15/70mm Film. I have ran these before upon the initial release except for Begins. I never ran Begins on IMAX, only 35mm. #70mmfilm #darkknighttrilogyimax70mm

I used to be an Imax projectionist years back and it becomes routine but what used to get the adrenaline running was running two projectors in sync when showing a 3D film in 70mm. Sometimes, you'd get drift resulting in a visual echo, that's if the computer running Windows NT got a glitch and then you'd have to stop the show and resync both projectors AND sound which was a bitch of a job because the clock is running. If the next show runs late as a result, all the others will so sometimes you just had to cancel that show. The projectors used 7k xenon lamps and you had to wear full protective gear to change the lamp as they were very volatile if still hot. One guy in France lost his face when the lamp exploded, I heard. To get the projectionist job in an Imax theatre, we preferred no experience to hiring a 35mm projectionist as they could be set with bad habits. It was a great job. Imax film is the only film that runs horizontally through the projector and each frame is momentarily static against the aperture. That hissing sound is the air used to suck the loop of film against the glass when it meets the aperture. Because Imax film pays out from the centre of the circular hub, the worst nightmare was seeing it spiral down to the floor overnight when you came in in the morning as we used to stick the tail with tape. Our Imax theatre was a circular dome screen, not that common but it closed about 18 years ago. Great while it lasted, though.

That's really cool. I ran 3D too back in the day, but with the GT projector. Alot of work. Before IMAX I was 35mm projectionist and then I was good friends with the district trainer so he aloud me the opportunity to learn IMAX. The training was very grueling. Lots of practice. Took me a couple of weeks to get it, but a couple of years to master it. Now I am really comfortable with IMAX and very nervous around 35mm because all 35mm is archival and can easily be overlooked because of size when threading up.

Cool story. Three panel Cinerama in the 1950's had a fourth 35 mm projector standing by to show a special reel on the center panel just in case there was a film break in one of three projectors. They would play the special reel to keep the audience entertained while they fixed the problem.

Certainly impressive, but just from a purely factual point of view - this system design is built upon all the work done by many different individuals designing film movie cameras since the concept was initially conceived over a hundred years ago. So many different individuals would have contributed the incremental developments along the way with their film movie camera designs and i would say this is just a combination of all of those individuals' work but in a larger format.

When I went to see Oppenheimer in 70mm, the range of a difference was clear to me. While yes digital is cheaper to run for movie theaters, film is where you find the places that care about their presentation. I watched it in digital and while an impressive film, I thought the practical effects looked awful and nothing special. In 70mm, you saw the entire color to it. The shaded blacks and the bleeding oranges in the nuke was something special. Film needs to come back. Digital is ruining films and the viewer experience watching them as it's cheaper and lazier to show. They need to get people in there who care about films to get these things right.

Films shot to IMAX film in camera need scanning, a digital intermediate making, CGI adding then a print made from that. I'd love to see an IMAX print being made, even though I know it's fundamentally the same as any other film print. Sadly many films in 4K don't have 4K-native DIs or 4K CGI, they're upscaled with film grain sometimes added. A few Blu-ray review sites have details of the resolutions of intermediates and final prints. I'd hope films intended for IMAX have suitably high resolution CGI resolutions.

There are only a few IMAX theaters in the world that still operate like this, and even fewer operate solely film on a day-to-day basis. Also, the quality of the IMAX 15/70mm film frame is far superior that that of any modern digital projector. I think you can go up to 18k on IMAX film vs the top of the line digital projectors top out at 4k, and TV monitors are “limited” to 8k (which is still an insanely high resolution). So while it may seem primitive to some people, it is still far superior than any digital projection in terms of actual image quality and detail. :)

Primitive??! you must have never seen a 15/70mm film then. Unfortunately most IMAX screenings do not work like this. They just hit play on a digital system. I’m thinking it _was_ archival quality until he put his fingers all over it. I know nothing about IMAX but I know nitrile or lint free cotton gloves are usually used when handling film negatives. Unless this print is going to be used and then tossed, I would think you wouldn’t want to store it long term after having been wrapped around someone’s fingers. I’m no expert. 🤷🏼‍♂️

No need for gloves. Using the leader to thread. That is fine to handle without gloves.

Only about 10 minutes of The Dark Knight were in IMAX. Imagine if they used film for Infinity War & Endgame 😂
@the80sdiehard
@the80sdiehard 5 жыл бұрын
It was actually 30 minutes of IMAX footage used. After that it became more and more. Dark Knight rises was almost an hour a worth. Interstellar was a little over an hours worth and Dunkirk was almost the entire movie. Sadly Inception did not use IMAX 15/70

Also I do not think they will be using any film for any Marvel movie seeing as how they are are anti film mainly for costs. The first four MCU movies were shot on film because back then everything was film and directors had a little more control on how the movie was made before Disney went into full force after the sale. The first four MCU movies are the best looking ones in my opinion. Shooting with IMAX film would be impossible I believe because of the effects rendering and how long that would take

Unfortunately this job is obsolete. Very few theaters run film and it's mostly archival prints. Once in a while a new release will show on film and they hire people like myself that still run film.

WOW....What a video! How you don't have heartburn from the stress of getting everything right. On top of that, that print of the film I know has to be very expensive. I got to see after the performance of "2001: A Space Odyssey" here in San Diego the film platter of some 5 miles.Not only that, your video is totally awesome. Thank you for sharing this to the world.

It not that bad, a good condition quality build up table does most of the work. I'm curious if he has ever brain wrapped or thrown a imax print before. That is where it gets interesting, it separates the pro from the rest. I enjoyed projection work, too bad these jobs are almost gone.

Brianbribri 007 LOTR would definitely break IMAX if it was shot on film as it is longer than Interstellar and IMAX had to develop special platters that weighed 600 pounds loaded. Normal Interstellar credits faded in and out however because the platters were fully loaded, IMAX changed the credits to roll and not fade in and out. If an Interstellar print ran $80K than an LOTR would neighborhood around $90K I’d imagine.

Oh man what an assembly all the way from the corner and from inside out twisting and turning and twisting again. How the hell do you get the film back to the reel like it was there. Thing I don't understand is how the audio is synced since it seems to come from completely different and much newer system?
