Threadmilling in Fusion 360 CAD

I am no expert in CAD/CAM but I thought I would share one of the lessons I learnt with my attempts in threadmilling some parts of my first fixture.

Alistair, I wish to thank you for the time you took to create this video. I am on the steep learning curve and started my threadmilling tests. I almost broke my tool, but stopped the spindle before it was too late. I was puzzled! Then I watched your video and sure enough, my holes were not modeled to the actual hole size I was using. Your video solved my mystery. Thank you!

Thanks, this cleared a few things up for me that I wasn't able to wrap my head around in John Saunders video. Only thing I need to figure out now is if feeds and speeds differ from what you would use on any other endmill.

That's why I always model my holes needing threads at their minor diameter

Just bought my first thread mill, so just looking up YT advice. So on your M6 hole in CAD, do you now draw it as a 5mm (minor diameter) or a 6mm hole?

I model it as the minor diameter. If I use Fusions M6 thread in the hole tool the radius ends up larger 2.518mm so I use that dimension in the NYC threadmill calculator as that is what will be driving the CAM

Cape Cod CNC thanks for letting me know. I was editing it in headphones so didn’t have too many issues hearing it. At the start I know the mic picked up some machine noise also which didn’t help.

Hi Alistair, does John's spreadsheet need any tweaking for metric?

I haven't checked out Rev 7 of the spreadsheet but the parts I was using in Rev 6 worked fine with metric. If you have a look at the formulas there is nothing specific in them for imperial or metric

@@RBravo82 you can simply convert the numbers in the formula by * 25.4. In reality didn't change a thing for the output result. The imperial numbers used in the formula are just conditions to be satisfied in order to get the result. No actual numbers used in the calculation.
