We'd ticked off Ardwick, so to keep the theme of awkward stations going, we took a detour to Reddish South and Denton!

That 156 will have been EMR before it was sent to Northern, but the actual refurb is Greater Anglia! Guess EMR couldn't be bothered ever refurbing it themselves!

EMR have done things on the cheap since day one. When the 170s came over from various TOCs they were being billed as "new trains", they blocked people on social media who pointed out the 170s are 25 years old. The interiors of the 170s are still in their old TOC colours.

Very nice to see you visit Guide Bridge! I train spot alot from there as I live very close but for other people, it isnt a very well known station! I alwats admire and think of where the old line used to be and how great the volunteers have made Guide Bridge look with nice station buildings and the garden. The very unique sound is the hum from the wires, you can never miss it. Lovely video as always!

There are so few trains at Cheshire stations, they all have to be comfortable places to spend a lot of time at.

Brilliant video Jen, I honestly can't undertsand how all the Cheshire stations managed to get the best kept station awards all in the same year lol. Denton station's exit being next to a motorway somehow doesn't feel very attractive to be honest.

In a sane world they would close these stations and spend the money on other services. Or give them a proper service.

Indeed. But I do think that they are due for an upgrade with Network Rail to replace the overhead wires at sometime in the near future.

Yikes, if I encountered the Ardwick station I would feel incredibly spooked being there alone. A friend of mine lives in Glossop. I envy her being able to leave the metro Seattle area and land there. I would have veered off course at Guide to go see her.

Network Rail needs to sort out the former Woodhead Line to Gosslop and Hadfield with replacing old overhead wires just like what they have done on the Southend Victoria Line in Essex. Overall some of the stations are quite nice.

So about 10 years ago, a lot of my uni classmates were going back to Manchester for Christmas, so we all got the train from Huddersfield to Piccadilly and had a pint in one of the bars before we all seperated and went our own ways. I was walking with someone towards the Huddersfield platform (I get off at Stalybridge) and he was getting a Rose Hill Marple train and getting off at Ardwick. Didn't think much about it then because most Rose Hill Marple trains stopped there but I guess not anymore.

For a short time in the 1950s my homeward journey from Marple High School involved a train from Marple to Guide Bridge followed by a trolley bus through Denton to Haughton Green. I don’t recall ever using Denton station though because, even then, before the M60 and M67 were built, it was not in a convenient location.

Best kept station in Cheshire... either Cheshire is a complete rotpile or that station ahs gone downhill a lot. And if stations only have one train a day, why bother. Yes I know about parliamentary lines... but heck UK, get with it, join the 20th century. Good luck on the rest of your Hope-ish valley line.

Another fab video. A little over 30 years ago Ardwick used to have an hour service Monday/Fridays and was gradually reduced to the token service now. The station bridge at Guide Bridge was destroyed in an arson attack over a decade ago and has never been rebuilt. I was on the first train to Stockport from Guide Bridge a few years ago when they had changed the schedule to 1 train each way and a woman hesitated then boarded only to worry when we diverted off the main line. The guard told her she was on the only train of the week and the first one in years not to be heading to Piccadilly so was advised to catch a connection at Stockport. On another day I met up with London boy on his All the Stations quest at Reddish South heading for Stalybridge.

Stations next to major city centre stations are fascinating. Most have gone - others such as Five Ways are a success. The ones like Ardwick and Bordesley are most interesting. I guess the local factories they served are long gone.
