I always like your demonstrations because they're slow enough for me to follow. But this one is harder because the demonstration is so brief I can't quite wrap my brain around what exactly it is you're doing. I think if this tutorial was a couple minutes longer, or if you did a whole row (or even two) I can better follow. My goal is to eventually knit a Scandinavian pattern because they're so pretty.

If you want to avoid long floats its just to twist the yarns around each other once or twice until you have your right color again that you are continuing with, so there is less chance to get caught in the floats. I learned this when making pattern knitting mittens :)

When stranding, do you usually go up several needles sizes to achieve the same gauge?

I have recently learned Portuguese knitting and was wondering if you could use it for the third color instead of constantly switching out colors?

What about the lime yarn? Does that just get pulled along at the bottom, never going over the others?

@knitpicks would this technique work if you have a pattern where there are "gaps" between using 1 of the 3 colours? i.e. I'm doing a Latvian mitten where I'm using 3 colours but sometimes there will be 5+ stitches between using 1 of the colours.

The trick is to remember to twist the yarn and to keep a even tension

looks simple but the problem is that you 2 contrasting colors get tangled up at the ball end and you have to be careful not to get them knotted together. could lead to disaster..

How do you manage three colors when you're knitting a picture in the round? Not like a traditional pattern? Because I've tried wrapping my floats however the fabric got way too thick and now it's not going to fit over the person's head.

You either make a steek and finding a design with a placket to have buttons in a front placket or make a shoulder placket you could alter your pattern or find a person with a smaller head (not happening) or rip it out and go to larger needles, figuring out just how loosely to make the floats. Necessity is the mother of invention. Life is full of learning experiences we didn't plan on having. There may be other things you can do to solve the problem. I am doing Fair Isle Christmas stockings and so as to not catch fingers, I am weaving floats in as I knit by how I knit with the two colors at a time. It does not make an elastic knit, whereas loose floats allow for stretching more. In a Christmas stocking, a pattern which isn't stretching means your stocking lasts for years of use and packages inside aren't going to catch on floats and little fingers aren't going to be trapped either. One other thing which may help is to decide which floats you could clip and graft extra yarn in. By doing this so long as you are using wool as wool yarn grafts are very strong, you wouldn't have to worry about it pulling apart. In which case Russian grafting can work with perhaps less yarn required and it is very strong; and you can find that method on KZbin. If you want to try the method, I'd advise knitting a sample of your pattern in a swatch on circular needles and inserting added yarn via grafting and see if it holds together and gives you the added stretch you need. Then you can calculate how many places you would need to add this after thought increase in your yarn floats in order to gain the stretch you are now lacking. But you would want to wash your swatch and see if in the washing your inserted grafts hold together. Sounds like a lot of work, however if what you do ruins all the knitting you've done or the sweater can't be salvaged because you tried something which won't survive washing, that is why I suggest whatever you do, you test that it is strong enough under real use conditions which includes washing. Hope something here may help you.

Thanks. I'm a bit disappointed...since Kerin began the video showing a sweater, I assumed this was a sweater pattern...I'm too math-challenged to convert this pattern into a sweater on my own.
