The 3 stages of chanting are stages of time:
-Stage 1 is praying and preparing our mind to enter a meditator’s mood and a certain consciousness to be present to the holy name.
-Stage 2 is when we are actually chanting and going deeply into the mood we created in Stage 1.
-Stage 3 is our life and activities when we are not chanting. This helps us get the mercy to go deeper into the holy name.
