@@mikealmere70 This is a quotation from over fifty years ago. I don't remember the name. I seem to remember that he was a Japanese bonsai grower or gardener, but the quote can be applied to any craft. When displaying craft work, I would often be told, "I don't have the patience to do that." Every craftsman has heard it a thousand times. My response is always this quote," A man who has no patience does not enjoy what he is doing." If you don't enjoy it, don't do it.

Great work on this tree. Really like the new pot that you gave it. And, the reunion.....interesting. So glad to see that cutting has sprouted - the Lyrata. Love the gardenia. I like the flowers so much I just added a miniature for my garden space. What nice gifts from your viewer. That new jade looks fantastic. And how nice to receive those mini pots. WOW! Can't believe you are composting those jade cuttings. I would have kept them until I discovered that the mother plant had actually survived. (But I understand how it is with keeping "too many plants/cuttings". Many gardeners have that issue.) Enjoyed watching this video. Can't wait to see what you will have in store for us in the next one.

If you disturb jade roots when repotting its recommended to not water the soil for 2 weeks that only invites chances of root rot and if you defoliated it too - make it 3-4 weeks

It is very difficult to transform a root bound tree to a shallow root system for bonsai, I would suggest cutting just a few roots with each repotting and over many years you should be able to reduce the root system for a shallow smaller pot.

Nigel, I recently transplanted a redwood sapling grown from a seed from its first container to a larger pot. The roots had coiled around the base of the first and I trimmed them a bit before replanting it. I hope I didn’t seal its doom when I trimmed the roots. I left a fair length of taproot and feeders. It’s gradually turning brown on the lower needles and working its way up. Any advice on how I might save my sapling?

・I think you can recycle that moss. I once saw an interesting method in a Japanese KZbin video where they just cut off / trimmed the top of the moss, put the cut off moss in a bit of water to clean it, and then just applied it with a spoon on top of the soil. The moss becomes very even this way. ・I wondered if you could use a different particle size for such small trees and if it could beneficial. For this you'd need another finer sifter though. ・I always wondered about all the plant material you get in the mail! I thought customs are usually fairly strict - especially at airports - but in Canada they either don't care so much or it's not that bad actually. I hope you survived that zombie apocalypse well! Great little tree :)

If you think you've cut off too many roots, treat the plant like a freshly made cutting. put the plant in a shady spot, partially defoliate it and water carefully until you see new growth starting. If you've left any roots at all, it should regrow if you treat it with care. Eventually, you will learn how many roots you can safely cut off. There are two ways to learn. First, listen to someone wiser. Second, make mistakes, figure out what you did wrong, stop doing that, then make more mistakes. When you stop making mistakes, have a cemetery plot ready.

Keep in mind that Nigel is often VERY risky when he's cutting roots. They take longer to recover but he gets through with it because he knows how to care for his plants. If you're a beginner, take off a little bit less and you should be fine.
@Thimbrethil
@Thimbrethil 3 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on what microclimate you have, what soil you use and how you care for your trees. Nigel knows that in his situation he can do this kind of pruning, and the tree will survive, but it’s more about knowing your plants and what can you do.
