I love the garden to the left of St Vedast alias Foster in Foster Lane. If the door is open you can go in. Lovely quiet space very close to St Paul's

Yes! That's a fabulous one, will feature on my new walk of the City's secret gardens. There's so many 'hidden' ones to discover!

Hi Katie, I seem to recall Finsbury Circus being a Roman burial site. Evidence of graves were found near the river Walbrock that runs under the east side of the square. Thank you for another great video: I am looking forward to exploring Cleary Gardens sometime soon!

How interesting, will look into that! Thanks David :)

Sigh... I can't believe I haven't come across some of these! I even used to work in the city and love to explore. I guess that's why you called them secret. Onto my post-lockdown list to go see. Thanks for the virtual tour!

Well glad I could share some new ones Adam! As I say at the beginning, the focus tends to be on a few 'famous' ones so happy to cast a light on these :)

I've never been to any of these, but my "favourite" hidden nook in the City of London is the churchyard accessed around the back of St Stephen's Church. It's not the most beautiful garden, but I love the feeling of sitting nestled between buildings from Wren's time to the present day!

Oh I know where you mean! Yes even if it's not the greenest space, a corner of calm and quiet is always a gem

@Look Up London I noticed the stained glass window in your story showed a different name and different story to the one you told - Robert rather than Richard and a bow window rather than a bridge. Is that yet another fascinating historical story?!

Here’s the official transcript from the Guildhall records. I may have misspoke and renamed him Richard! 😬 “To all persons who these present letters shall see or hear, the Mayor Aldermen and Commonalty of the City of London Greeting, know ye that we have granted unto Messire Robert Knolles Knight, our dear and well beloved fellow citizen, and to Constance his wife, leave to make a Haut-pas of the height of 14 feet extending from the house of the said Robert and Constance his wife on the west side thereof to another house to them belonging on the east side thereof, beyond the lane of Syvendenlane in the parish of All Hallows Berkyngechirche, near the Tower of London, rendering yearly to the Chamberlain of the Guild Hall of the said City for the time being one red rose at the feast of St. John the Baptist.”

Cleary Garden might have been a bath house and a gathering place 2000 years ago but at least we can keep our clothes on to gather these days!!
@LookUpLondon3 жыл бұрын
Haha yes it is recommended to do so, otherwise the City police may come and have a word 🤣

I do wish we had free Roman style public baths today. Hopefully a very rich person or a kind government will build one. I think they would be a massive tourist attraction as well as soothing many aches and pains!
@LookUpLondon3 жыл бұрын
Fun idea! I guess they've been replaces by private spas and gyms, I suppose London's lidos are the closest things now, or perhaps Hampstead's ponds!
