Cao Cao was a real hero. He did what must have been done. Some people say Liu bei was better than him because of his benevolence but Cao Cao was not a villain. Cao Cao wanted a land ruled by order where everyone do what they should do so that the land improve. He had a fair point and was right about the han. But some people hated him because they couldn't understand his ideals.

Actually Cao Cao was widely renowned for treating his soldiers and advisers as family. ROTK is obviously very pro-Shu and anti-Wei. For a more objective account of Cao Cao I would recommend Rafe de Crepsigny's "Imperial Warlord". It is an award winning text on the life and thoughts of Cao Mengde!

Not gonna lie, when Cao Cao yells "Go!" to his last remaing loyal soldiers but he himself stays behind kneeling in the dirt, I almost teared up a little. Such a greatly written villain, such a great actor. Ever since the start of the series, Cao Cao has consistently been portrayed with just a slight hint of nuance, never fully commited to evil. It all built up to this moment, when I, the viewer, asked myself "Is he putting on a show just to save his own skin, or is there a part of him that is seriously willing to sacrifice himself so that those who stayed with him until the end can escape and live?" What a character arc!

In Chinese, when somebody give you kindness, you obligated to pay them back. So when Guan Yu killed Cao Cao generals and let him go unpunished and meet Liu Bei, Guan Yu is obligated to pay Cao Cao kindness back.

I have to give Guan Yu SOME credit. At least he paid back his debts. People would do well to remember that not only did Cao Cao bend over backwards to serve him (and also gave him the much-desired Red Hare), but more importantly, Lord Cao spared Guan Yu's miserable life on more than one occasion. Seeing as how Guan Yu would be DEAD if it weren't for Cao Cao sparing him, it's only fitting that Guan Yu should pay him back in kind.

Wrong. Cao Cao's army is already decimated after red cliff. You are right that Wu will have advantage as they are the number one power out of the three. Liu Bei still haven't established himself and his lands. He still needs to recover from losing to Cao Cao before allying with the Wu in the battle of Red Cliff. Cao Cao's lands would be ripe for conquering by the Wu and would eventually over take the Shu. If Liu Bei's position was better, they would over take all three.

@Vlnxd Roa The moment Cao Cao fall, or get captured, the Wei will sink into civil war between Cao Cao's successors, very much like the struggle between the Yuan brothers after Yuan Shao's passing. Right until Cao Cao's selection of Cao Pi as his successor, Cao's ministers and generals were split with their support for one or the other brother. So letting Cao Cao lived and return was a much better choice, a divided Wei will be easy target for Wu, much like how Wei conquered the Yuan brothers. In fact, Wu can easily annex Liu Bei while the Cao brothers bleed themselves further.

​@Vlnxd Roa The bad record you speak of was after Liu Bei had solidify his hold over the the Jing lands, right after the battle of red cliff, Liu Bei honestly doesn't had much to speak of, just Jiang Xia and whatever troops Liu Biao left behind. The power balance only shifted after Wu taken heavy losses in the campaign against Cao Ren and the death of Zhou Yu while at the same time, Liu Bei managed to consolidate his hold over the rest of the Jing Province that he took over. In the situation of Wei breaking up Wu will be in a much better position to take advantage of any chaos that occur compared to Liu Bei. At that moment, they were in the same situation as Cao Cao were after Yuan Shao's passing. The entire concept of the three kingdoms that Zhuge Liang (and Lu Su) thought up was centered on a balance of power between 3 kingdoms. At the moment of the allied victory at Red Cliff, Cao's death will immediately crash the balance, with Wu firmly secured as the dominant power. And honestly if everything had gone Zhuge Liang's way, letting Cao Cao lived wouldn't had made a difference too. His original plans was for a coordinated push from 2 directions, one from Hanzhong towards, Changan, the other from Jing towards Xiang Yang. Wei had yet to recovered from the previous wars, so a move like that will had crash them, and Cao Cao can't do anything about it. But it was just fate that Guan Yu was impatient and decided to move earlier on his own, assuming his brother will follow.

cao cao knew GuanYu would let him go. he knew kongming had sent Guan Yu specifically knowing this weakness. by letting cao cao live, he calculated that wei (soon to be), wu and shu would form a deadlock to balance and preserve peace, because wu and shu wouldnt fight together lest wei (cao cao at this point) attack them both after the battle. thus he needed cao cao to live & calculated Guan Yu was the only general he had, that wouldnt not kill him.

I don't think so. Zhuge Liang did underestimate Guan Yu's affinity and relationship with Cao Cao. He was definitely one of the top commanders, and probably the most loyal. He expected that loyalty to transcend into execution, but Zhuge Liang did admit this was the only flaw in his plan

There are many reason why Guan Yu become a scapegoat and driven out in "exile" from Shu by Zhuge Liang, one of it is because he let Cao Cao escape, the other reasons including Wu family treacherous nature and Liu Bei weak disposition as a leader. Zhuge Liang ironically sabotaging his leader's family in order to gain control and preventing the kingdom of Shu demise in a short time but unable to holding the reins forever as Liu Bei impulsive vindictiveness is a double edged blade to the kingdom and to his own people.

Even in his era, Guan Yu's not the 'Greatest of All Greats' in terms of martial strength. Truth is there were several others who could match him. So why is Guan yu given the title God of War ? Why not the others? This scene is why. At the crux of his greatest achievement: taking Cao Cao's head, thus saving the realm. He's moved by how Cao Cao's people truly believed in him, and how Cao Cao himself spared them. Even though by doing this he's betraying himself, ruins himself, Guan still chose mercy instead of glory. One could imagine how utterly crushed his own heart was. But he's willing to suffer judgement and humiliation, if only he could spare the innocents and the weak. All his life, Guan Yu showed outstanding qualities of courage, loyalty, tenacity. But it's actually his merciful heart, that makes him worthy of being elevated as God of War.

@@condorX2 You are correct, Wei Yan got fucked over because he was frustrated by Shu's incompetence, if he wanted to betray Shu there were much better ways and Zhuge Liang actually got credit for Wei Yan's successes in his later years. The thing about Zhuge Liang's supposed order is that there's every likelihood it was forged as it's obviously against Shu's interest to just go home, Zhuge Liang never won a military campaign in the first place but they were supposed to follow his orders even from the grave!? Kind of incredible, either Wei tricked them or Shu got taken over by incompetents, probably both. While Zhuge Liang seems to have been incorruptible, the truth is besides his advice not to attack Wu which was his best decision in Shu's latter years, Zhuge Liang crafted Shu into a totally ineffective state where its main virtues were a lack of infighting. He was also clearly biased against Shu's most competent general.

I found that many people in youtube praise the 3 kingdoms of this version. But in China, we think this version is not so good. The old version（1994）is much better than the new one（2010）. The new version changed too much from the fiction. For example, you can clearly see that Sima Yi is a rebel from his appearance. But in fact his not. Otherwise he would have been killed by Cao Cao.😂

This episode of Guan Yu sparing Cao Cao's life is quite contrived. More so when Zhuge Liang knew Guan Yu owes Cao Cao a life debt. He could very well assigned Guan Yu elswhere and some one else, the third bro Yide be the one confronting Cao Cao, and one can bet Yide will not hesitate even one second to finish off Cao Cao. But then this drama still has a way to go, right? With one of the main protagonist dead, this drama will kaput. But nevertheless, this Guan Yu - Cao Cao encounter is contrived
