Exactly my thoughts. He initially says "I've done everything I could. It's up to heaven now." Then later in a moment of arrogance he sort of challenges the heaven. This must been the same thinking that the producers had. Interestingly, in the novel Zuge Liang merely sighs and says something like "Man proposes, Heaven disposes."

This is why there's a saying in Chinese is that "There's always a mountain that's higher". Zhuge Liang thought he was smart by trapping the Wei army in there with Sima Yi still thinking of what to do and Sima Yi thought he outsmarted Zhuge Liang by claiming back his lost possessions but realized too late that Zhuge Liang had actually sabotaged the entire silos for the Wei army to take back. What Zhuge Liang failed to count was that being that old already, he forgot that he can predict the weather pattern better than any strategist and yet he did not predict that rain would actually fall.

50 chapters prior, Zhuge Liang can change the weather. Then in episode 93, he cannot even predict the possibility of rain, which even the dumbest person can do by looking at the dark clouds prior to battle.

@@bryanwong1625 That's what's called Heaven's will. I remember playing tennis on a sunny day. Clear skies. 30 minutes into it dark clouds developed and poured for 10 minutes straight. I was able to see the dark clouds a mile away though, but it moved so quick.

I once heard my university professor explain this battle as follows: The entrance to Shangfang Valley is narrow, with a broad interior. The sides are high, and the middle is low. This type of terrain is not conducive to air circulation. Once a fire starts in the valley, the temperature begins to rise, causing the air close to the ground to rapidly heat up and expand upwards, while the upper and surrounding cooler air contracts and sinks, creating a strong convection valley wind, resulting in fierce winds. At the same time, as a large amount of hot air rises from the valley floor to a certain height, the water vapor in the air condenses into clouds due to the lower temperature. Additionally, the large amount of smoke and dust produced by burning brushwood rises into the sky, providing ideal nuclei for water vapor condensation, thus accelerating the condensation process. The small water droplets in these clouds collide and merge, gradually increasing in size, ultimately leading to a torrential downpour that extinguishes the fire in Shangfang Valley, allowing Sima Yi to escape. Even though Zhuge Liang was highly skilled in astronomy, this advanced level of knowledge would not have been accessible during that era.

Interesting. So I guess Zhuge Liang's main mistake was to rely on the fire to snuff Sima Yi out, instead of using the chaos ensued to slip an assassin among the Wei ranks, huh? Or at least send a 2nd force behind the blocking troops. A mistake that happened because Zhuge Liang was a devout Taoist, and a man of foreseeing. He was not... determined enough, to finish the job himself instead of relying to "Heaven's Will"

The even more magnificent part is that since we don't know how much detail regarding the campaign was actually true, how much was passed down tale as folklore, how much were assumption in the history record, and how much were fictionalized by Luo Guanzhong. So either the tale was indeed mostly true, or the knowledge was available to Luo at his time (the Ming dynasty), or both.

Whats sad is zhuge liang didnt call for who liu bei became by calling for his lord not his majesty (ju gong instead of bi sha). He worked himself to death to keep the promise he made to the humble man he first met at his cottage.

Perhaps... suicide is usually something Sima Yi totally abhors, no way he'd go for suicide. But in this case, he felt such guilt and responsibility that he chose to atone by killing himself. Because at this point Shu essentially lost the war. All 5 North Expeditions - expensive and bloody - were for naught; Wei's defence wasn't overwhelmed, and its way bigger economy and mapower meant that their loses were mostly neglible.

Zhuge Liang legit started bunch of Northern Expeditions to try and conquer wei however he kept failing every single time. Not just that he had to carry the whole shu kingdom since they weren't really many smart strategist except for him and the five tiger generals had also passed away leaving only a few good generals.

See how Zhuge Liang always lament "if only we still have Jing." Well wasn't that part of what Liu Bei's campaign was all about: recover Jing. To put the longzhong plan back on track. To fix the mess Guan yu caused. Liu Bei is blamed for his decision to attack Wu. But truth is... we all blame him only because he lost.

If Deng Ai has returned to Cheng Du, Wei Guan would be killed in revenge. Therefore, Wei Guan ordered, Tian Xu to re-capture and murder Deng Ai. Tian Xu had a personal grievance again Deng Ai and immediately rode and caught up with Deng Ai’s party near Mianzhu. Deng Ai, Deng Chong, and Shi Zuan were immediately executed. Sima Zhao knew Deng Ai was innocent, however, he need both Zhong Hui and Deng Ai dead so he can take the credit of conquering Han.
