I am a retired Electrical Engineer, I spent the 1970's and first half of the 1980's designing and building Nuclear Power Stations. When I started, I truly felt I was doing something very good for mankind. I have always felt Nuclear is an excellent source of electrical power, the power plants use a relatively small amount of fuel to generate a very large amount of energy. There are no emissions and if maintained they are extremely reliable. However, when something goes wrong the consequences can be large. In the late 1970's there was a movie called "China Syndrome" that was released a few days before the Three Mile Island incident. A few years later Chernobyl happened. The reputation of Nuclear Energy was so damaged that I had to lie about my career due to the hatred I received. In 1985, I decided to make a career change and never looked back. People need to understand that any source of energy has some form of negative environmental impact. I suspect someday people will need to come to grips with environmental harm caused by solar and wind power generation. Maybe some day Nuclear energy will stage a comeback, though after my experience i think it unlikely. Sorry for the long rant!

Yes maybe , but Chernobyl didn't change the world's weather patterns or cause any extinctions. Therefore no environmental or ecological damage except for the wildfires now that have emitted radioactive materials in the smoke and Russian troops digging trenches there and receiving serious radiation burns. Ukraine is overstretched with regards to war and fires . It looks like the reall deal Chernobyl incident mocked the validity of the China syndrome premise. Only USSR could've directed the helicopter pilots to expose themselves to the naked core while dropping tonnes of shielding stuff on it . We watched China syndrome in 81 at a drive in and Chernobyl was I think 86 or was it the space shuttle....

@@shahid3520 Unfortunately Solar panels are not that clean too. Most solar panels are not used for more than 25 years because of damage, loss of efficiency or because they rely on subsidies to be profitable. The materials are hard to reclaim due to everything being glued together (because they need to be able to withstand all kinds of weather). So most just get dumped somewhere with all the toxic materials still there. And this stuff stays toxic forever, doesn't even have a half life. I am by no means an expert on the topic, but it is certainly not as one-sided as you make it sound. Every source of energy has its place and usecase. And solar just can't deliver 24/7 energy, so that's that.

Minor correction on TMI-2, the LOCA was caused by a valve getting stuck open causing the coolant to drain AND the readout on the pressurizer caused the operators to stop adding water to the core. That lead to the core becoming uncovered and the story picks back up from there.

My anti-nuclear sentiments evolved in the 1970s, when the problem of waste storage for thousands of years was a big issue. I have since learned (at this site) of the possibility of reprocessing spent fuel in order to get further use out of it -- for as many iterations as it takes to render the remainder negligible. Assuming I understand that process (I think it's called "breeding"), will the revitalized TMI plant produce waste that can reused?

@@GlenHunt I remember. That's why I said I learned about breeder reactors on this site. But I don't know if the waste materials produced at the Three Mile Island facility can be used for that. The alternative, it seems to me, would be to put it in "safe storage" forever. Elina has me pretty convinced that new-generation nuclear energy is worth looking into. That's good. But if it's going to yield old-generation problems, I'd have to rein in my enthusiasm for it. Do you happen to know the answer to this question?
@GlenHunt

@@dactylntrochee I believe breeder reactors, which was also one of my favorites, is different enough that the TMI type can't be retrofitted for that. That said, maybe reprocessed spent fuel would work well enough for Microsoft's needs.

Some questions which occurred to me: Have the instrumentation shortcomings and any other design faults which lead to the unit two meltdown been properly fixed in unit one? Since its design is about 60 years old, I imagine there have been substantial advances in reactor design since then? How big (or small) are those changes, and have they retrofitted such changes and/or how hard would it be to do so? Have they taken account of climate change affecting the Susquehanna river on which it depends for cooling? My main criticism of this scheme, ignoring qualms about nuclear energy and the TMI plant, is: if steady low carbon energy is available like this, it should go towards worthwhile activities, to _replace_ carbon-intensive generation capacity, instead of as additional capacity used to power "AI" junk.
@michaelsommers2356
@michaelsommers2356 Күн бұрын
Of course those flaws have been addressed. TMI was not the only reactor of that design. At least one of those other reactors had experienced the same stuck valve that TMI had, and had properly reported it, but the operators at TMI had not got the word. Nobody's fault, but the procedures were not good enough.

I don't understand why the fuel melted during the accident. My layperson understanding is that those reactors used water as a moderator and fission would decrease/stop if water was not present and the reactors were designed to operate this way because it would make such accidents "impossible". Is this incorrect? Yes, I think a more detailed video about the accident that covers points such as these would be helpful. Edit: Also, who is responsible for the long term storage and disposition of the spent fuel? And please don't say the US government because all they ever do is kick the can on the issue.

The full explanation involves some special properties of the instrumentation which fooled the operators (who should have known about this!) into believing the reactor had sufficient water. There are various videos and writeups on the incident on the net, search for them. It's pretty interesting. There's also the fictional movie "China Syndrome" about a nuclear reactor accident. Yes, fictional! When I saw it first I thought they dramatized the Three Miles Island accident. Then I found the film was released just weeks before the accident. Unlike a car engine, a nuclear reactor keeps producing heat even if it is shutdown, so this heat has to be continuously removed by the coolant. I have high hopes that they will also be an early customer of the next generation of reactors, some of which are funded by their founder and former CEO Bill Gates.

Surely Microsoft will still need to rely on the grid to supply their data centres? Isn't this deal just guaranteeing that a certain amount of electricity is put into the grid? Or are they really having their own distribution from the power station to the data centres?

Wonder what it would take to bring TMI-1 back online? It's been a few decades, so it shouldn't be nearly as radioactive as before, could probably be removed and replaced with a new reactor. This way, you get to reuse the rest of the power plant, such as the switchyard, employees, etc. Alternately, perhaps a new reactor could be built on-site and added to the total instead. The tricky part there is you'd probably need a whole new reactor building, etc.

Hoping Australia gets on board with nuclear power, rather than just digging up uranium and selling yellow cake. So many higher skilled value adding parts to the supply chain than mining.

I was considering this topic a couple days ago in terms of whether we may see more private investment in basic research towards alternative (non-tokamok) methods of fusion from these AI companies. Cracking that nut would give that company a very difficult to overcome advantage in the AI/ML industry in terms of price competitiveness.

Thanks for the rundown on this. Recently, there was an article that they were thinking of testing an SMR at the largest coal plant in Nebraska (Gerald Gentleman Station). I've seen lots of articles stating that SMRs can be integrated into existing coal plant infrastructure, but I'm unclear on what parts and how. Have you seen anything about these type of conversions?

Cobalt and Aluminium have never looked so good. It is interesting that Microsoft have opted for nuclear power to run their servers "as reliable" while pushing for the rest of the world to invest in wind and solar. I guess as long as you have internet access 24/7 what does it matter if you can't heat your home, cook food or drive the EV to work, you'll be happy.

This is a good example where Nuclear is better than renewables. The data centers in question I suspect are going to be used to store the data for tons of businesses. Access to business information is critical. Disruptions are costly. Microsoft's customers demand access to this data 24/7, regardless of conditions. Nuclear is the energy source to support a constant, reliable and heavy electrical load. Nuclear is the answer to our increasing demand for electrical power.

I'm pretty sure that SL-1 was the biggest nuclear reactor accident in the US. Although a much smaller reactor, more radiation and contamination was released and it directly killed all three people working on the reactor at the time.

A video on the 3 mile island would be nice. A video on the investigation after the disaster would be fantastic. It was one of the greatest analysis of what to do going forward after a disaster in history. My understanding is the President made a statement that no human would ever be blamed. This was a process failure and we need everyone to say what actually happened and not just people trying to cover their own ass. It worked the analysis was fantastic

3 mile island was one of the most beneficial disasters in history. Without that happening we might never have gotten the safety regulations that have saved so many power plants since. 1st. The president of the United States made a statement that no human will ever get blamed for the disaster. This allowed investigators to get real answers from people because they were not trying to cover their ass. 2nd many of the engineers came from nuclear sub which have different goals during a disaster. Now we are aware those engineers need training when they go between technologies. 3rd important warnings were not made to report in an important way. One statement was there was a big warning light on the wall warn That the core was overheating. It was right next to the extremely important light that the elevator was stuck. 😂😂

I guess the best news is that some nuclear power plants that have been closed down, but not demolished, can be brought back online. I guess rehabilitating these plants will cost a lot less and take a lot less time than a new build. Would be curious to know how much potential power there is around the world in viable plants that have been shut down.

In 2023 US nuclear power output accounted for about 18% of our energy. That was about 775 _billion_ Kwh per year. To completely replace fossil fuels, we would need about 3 times that. A typical SMR (Small Modular Reactor) puts out about 2.5 billion Kwh per year. To meet our future energy needs, the US should be building 10-20 SMR's _a month_ ... for the next 5 years. That is the scale of the problem non-nuclear renewables are facing. The numbers are inescapable... we need nuclear reactors. We need a lot of them, and we need them fast. So, I say "Go Microsoft". reference: _The U.S. Energy Information Administration:_

Your t-shirt was the first thing I noticed, I like it. As for using a retired nuclear plant for a data center, that certainly makes sense to me. What makes more sense is to locate data centers in the far north where cooling can be done simply using the exterior environment.
