Hi all, thanks for checking out the journey! I've attached an AllTrails route below. We went from Sunday July 23rd to Wednesday July 26th - three nights. It was originally planned for 4 but we realized our schedule for the rest of the week would be really tight. The longest water carry was on the 2nd day of about 10 miles over and down Polaris Pass. Snowmelt was still going strong so there were many, many options to refill in beautiful locations. Water was never a concern :) Our planned route is linked below, we cut out the Matterhorn/Ice Lake trail because of our schedule for the rest of the week: www.alltrails.com/explore/map/wallowa-eagle-cap-loop-july-2023-988dce1?u=i&sh=1y2gwo

I was born in Whitman County July 23rd (start of your trip) 1946. I miss living in the area very much, but luckily, visit relatives there often. There is no place like the Wallowa's. From Jacksonville, Or..Thanks for the video.

Great video!! Fun to see the aerial footage! I’d love to know your route and where you made camp. I’ve backpacked the Wallowas 3 times and it never gets old… I’m always looking for new routes to explore.

Thanks so much for watching! It really is such an unbelievable place. It totally blew my expectations away. I've pinned my comment to this video but here is an AllTrails link to our planned trip (we cut it short and skipped the Ice Lake/Matterhorn trail, unfortunately). www.alltrails.com/explore/map/wallowa-eagle-cap-loop-july-2023-988dce1?u=i&sh=1y2gwo

From the US Forest Service: "UAS are considered to be both 'motorized equipment' and 'mechanical transport' and, as such, they cannot take off from, land in, or be operated from congressionally designated wilderness areas."

Fortunately, it is possible for drone pilots to fly in national forests. Unlike National Parks (which are controlled by the Department of Interior), the National Forests fall under USDA’s (US Department of Agriculture) domain. The following excerpt clarifies USDA’s stance on commercial filming and photography permits 1. If the primary purpose is to inform and educate, a permit is not required. 2. If the activity presents no more impact on land than that of the general public, a permit is not required “To further help differentiate between journalism and other activities, the following question should be asked. Is the primary purpose to inform the public, or is it to sell a product at a profit? If the primary purpose is to inform the public, no permit is required and no fee is assessed. I also want to emphasize that commercial photography only requires a permit if the photography takes place at locations where members of the public are not allowed or uses models, sets or props. Commercial photography and landing fees should be primarily viewed as land use fees. If the activity presents no more impact on the land than that of the general public, then it shall be exempt from permit requirements”. ~ Thomas Tidwell, 17th Chief, United States Forest Service

@@toobored54 You're talking about National Forests and ignoring the part about wilderness areas, which this trip was in. And drone flights in wilderness areas are prohibited, regardless of purpose or intent.

@@SDSsongs Exactly, just on a common sense and respect level, its a wilderness area, nobody wants to hear a drone. Its supposed to be... wilderness.

You're right! I was aware of the National Forest rule but in my research I guess I didn't see that specific regulation in regards to wilderness, which Eagle Cap is. I did get a drone flight map app to make sure for the future. I was totally respectful of those around me though and never flew while others were around.
