The way this was edited and produced was very informative please do more like this where the pictures are on screen as the photographer takes them and always show step by step progress between adding each light source. It really helps to follow along with that style of presentation.

Subject has obviously been in front a camera before and knows what to do. No posing required. That makes it easy. As always well done.

Daniel, thank you for another great OnSet, and for using a male model in the demonstration. There are no rules with photography, though I have the sense you prefer to light women and men differently - and I believe that comes from client expectations. It was nice to see a lighting set up geared towards men today. Rather than the hair the kicker was used to further define the face and shape the jawline. More use of fall off from the key. I can already imagine how these photos would have a different editing endpoint (going full Hoey with clarity and contrast) than say pictures of Marisa or Erica. Btw, your skillful arranging and rearranging of light sources is inspiring.

@@DanielNortonPhotographer I enjoy your edits and how you get everything right in camera to make the process easier. I meant creating images suited to your style yet can also take a little clarity to show texture. Like the Feb 2nd and 9th posts of The White House Band on your instagram where we can vary contrast with fill. When watching OnSet I take notes and apply your techniques in practice sessions, and it'd be cool to see more where you light subjects in "a manly way".

Hey Daniel, what is the recommended distance from the subject to the background also the distance from your key and fill lights from the subject?
@DanielNortonPhotographer
@DanielNortonPhotographer 5 жыл бұрын
Far enough that the key doesn't hit the background... unless you want that of course.. As far as to the subject, if you want a soft light, as close as possible

Great video! Thanks for the very clear explanation of the positions and showing the differences. (I also love your use of Capture One, which I moved to last year from Lightroom and now it's actually painful when I have to open LR to get older photos from!) The use of TTL was really interesting, and different from other studio setup tutorials I've seen (where they are always metering and setting them manually). I find that with my Godox XPro trigger, it's very easy to start with TLL, and then use the TCM button to switch this to manual and then adjust. Is this similar to what you did with the Profoto triggers here? I would have welcomed some information about the relative strengths of the different lights, as TTL set them or as you adjusted them.

krbenoit yes, TTL to get a base exposure, then switch to Manual

Tech question:-) Is that paper background the 83"/136cm?, it just seems wider? Superb pictures straight out of camera, I am really a fan of that too, and could not agree more with you on that.
@fraensemeier-fotografie
@fraensemeier-fotografie 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, thanks for sharing knowledge!!! One question: your seamless paper seems to be put on just one single tripod with a boom. Is that stable enough? Seems like a more portable solution than having to set up a two-tripod-system! And do you find the quite small width of the paper suitable enough? It is 4,5 foot wide, right? I am looking for a portable option for a background. Maybe you also have experience with those pop-up folding backgrounds? They are damned cheap, but the reviews I find are so-so. Cheers, Peter

Daniel, great lighting tips as always but I have a focus question. You started by taking time to get the focus on Justin's eye for your first shot. After that you took several other shots and Justin was moving about so his eye could never have been at the same focus point. Did you use manual focus and then rely on the fact that he never moved far off the focal plane?

Hey Daniel, great vid as always. No related to this one but got a quick question. That Magnum reflector you like, is there a Bowens equivalent? Been looking at the Bowens 50 Keylite and it looks like it's made to do the same thing, just wondered if you'd come across it at all?

@@DanielNortonPhotographer Can you demonstrate a full body portrait/editorial shot? When Justin first sat down with one foot on the chair rung, and later with both feet on the floor look like casual poses I see in photos of men. Wondering about the various styles you'd use to light that and three-quarters photographs.
