Three Rivers Fountain Adelaide
Exploring John Dowie's Iconic 1968 Fountain: A Tribute to River Gods #travel #australia #australiatravel #southaustralia #threeriversfountain
This fountain, created by sculptor John Dowie, was inaugurated in 1968. Dowie reportedly mentioned that it is an ancient tradition to dedicate fountains to the gods of the rivers that supply them. Although there were no river gods, the water for this fountain is sourced from the Murray, Onkaparinga, and Torrens Rivers. The rivers are symbolized by two female figures, each holding a bird (a black swan for the Torrens and a heron for the Onkaparinga), and an Aboriginal man holding an ibis for the Murray.
The fountain has three sides and is situated in an 18-meter-wide hexagonal pool. The three aluminum figures with their birds are placed on granite pedestals. The fountain reaches nearly five meters in height and is crowned by an aluminum structure resembling a crown. Water flows from the top pool into three smaller mid-level pools before cascading into the main pool.
