This pilot theme intro mimics the English show "Man of the House". If you ever get a chance to watch those episodes it is almost line for line scripting of the first few shows of "Threes Company". The Characters names were exactly what shows up in this intro where the Male Star was named David and the two Girls names were Samantha and Jenny. They didn't change the lines much but think it was a great idea to at least change the main characters names. It is weird to think that John RItter's name could have been David when we knew him so well as Jack on Threes Company.

This was based on the UK series "Man About The House" and the first TC episodes used the same plots and even the same dialog as the UK show. The UK characters were Robin, Chrissy and Jo with George and Mildred Roper as downstairs neighbors and best friend Larry. In this pilot, the Ropers were also named George and Mildred (Mrs Roper might've been Helen... I can't remember). I've seen this pilot in full and it was quite good, but felt too much like the UK series (particularly Suzanne Zenor's character) to have widespread appeal to an American audience.

Mrs. Roper in the US was indeed Helen. Renaming Robin to Jack, via David, was likely because Robin is considered a woman’s name in the US. However, both characters had similar surnames-Robin Tripp and Jack Tripper. Both series led to spin-offs in which the male lead opened his own restaurant. In the UK, this was Robin’s Nest (the program and the restaurant); in the US, it was Three’s a Crowd (I believe the restaurant was Jack’s Bistro). Both series featured female lead characters named Vicky and her father, but the UK spinoff lasted for 6 series while the US spinoff was canceled after 1 season.
@yossarian6799 Жыл бұрын
@@davidthaler7018 Thanks! I wasn't sure about Helen because it's been AGES since I saw that original pilot on Nick at Night or some such cable channel. I remember Audra Lindley drawling "Jaaaaawge" in a Brooklynese manner. I watched Robin's Nest on PBS but only saw "Man About the House" when I briefly lived in the UK and bought the DVD. Oh and the Ropers had their own spin-off in the UK too, "George and Mildred", with the exact premise of "The Ropers", even with a stuffy estate-agent neighbor named Jeffrey. Most of my friends in England were unaware that any of these had been re-made for the US.

So this is Three's Company from Earth-2 in the multiverse where Jimmy Carter went on to be a four term president after he helped the U.S win the "Universal War" against the aliens from Enceladus (one of Saturn's moons), the Magnavox Odyssey 2 video game system defeated the Atari 2600, Hasbro's Maxie doll outsold Mattel's Barbie doll and became the best selling doll of the 1980's, and Three's Company got cancelled after three seasons, but it's spin-off known as The Ropers lasted 12 seasons.

That's the alternate universe where Cadillac Eldorados became even LARGER, the amount of lead added to gasoline was INCREASED, and Afro-style wigs became the mandatory headdress for every U.S. citizen over the age of 3!

I've never seen this before, and rarely watched any of the show when it was on, but the front of the residence is eerily similar to the madhouse I grew up in.
