TIMESTAMPS FOR THE IMPATIENT:
0:59 , 1:19 , 1:42
After July 2nd 2015 proved to be a very hot day with temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius, metereological services issued severe thunderstorm warnings in the early afternoon, affecting the coastal and northern regions of Holland from about 6pm until 6am the next day.
This storm started with some heavy precipitation but that died out quite quickly.
The storm itself wasn't spectacular at first, but that was about to change.
Rather unprepaired as I was, I held my TASCAM DR-40 and a Rode NT4 microphone connected to it in one hand, while holding the camera with my other.
This unfortunately caused some microphone-handling to be recorded, I tried my best in editing that out.
After the first strike, you see me placing the camera on my bed, in an attempt to pull some plugs. There were 2 mains cables running more or less next to my feet and I wasn't very comfortable with that. After the second strike I did not really get the time to do something and after the third, I found it to be suicidal to even touch a plug still in a live wall-socket (yes, no powercut after the first strike!)
Unfortunately, I hit the record button after the third strike and in the adrenaline rush, I didn't notice that. Thankfully, the TASCAM kept running, allthough the loss of image is a pity, as strike number 5 was again a very clear and bright strike right in front of me.

a good frequency you can use for lightning tracking is down around 150 KHZ, if it's quiet on the long wave bands, not your average HF bands, you can hear it as far out as maybe a good 600 mules depending on the strength of the storm, it's actually got an asmr effect to it, and sometimes i will use it to help me calm down from some of the anxiety attacks i sometimes have, try it, it's very calming.

Could very well be, but I'm already astound how sensitive my small radio is: sometimes it produces clear crackling with the radar (BeNeLux coverage) not even showing something. The storms then prove to be further away than 3-400 km. I have had conditions as well where a large part of Europe was completely clear of any thunderstorms, but I could receive a far away station, with clear crackling with it as well: when I started searching for international lightning-radars, I found some storms to be well over 600 km away. I did fall asleep multiple times to the sound of static, after the far-away station I received faded and I got too tired to tune the radio again or just turn it off.

You watch these things cause you love lightning. So why does it happen more often than not, that with the first one or two strikes you almost jump so high that you could put a hole in your ceiling? Even when you’re expecting to see it? It’s unfathomable......🌩⚡️
@weeardguy
@weeardguy 6 жыл бұрын
Yep. I experience the same 'problem'. Especially that video from Finland (I believe) with the guy filming from his porch and nearly getting hit made me jump. It's probably also because there is so much click-bait stuff online and video's from people who can't tell the difference between a camera-interference close-strike and a real close strike. As a result they label their video wrong, so when I see 'close strike' in a video, I'm always a little sceptical at first like 'first see how if it really is a close one'.
@marleymcleay9228

The surprise can come from the violence of the lightning which can be beyond what you were imagining to happen. Given lightning varies in power, strength distance and frequency. Many random elements that can throw a curve ball. Positive lightning leaves me gasping for air sometimes.
@weeardguy
@weeardguy 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but the power of lightning strikes, especially close ones, rarely makes it across the screen. It just lacks the sound-pressure that makes you feel the thunder in your stomach or even feel the sound-waves entering the room via an open window and the average sound-system is not able to reproduce the huge dynamic differences a loud thunder creates (a reason why I usually shoot with sound-level set to manual) Only positive lightning strikes are always amazing ;) both in real life and in a video. Encountered quite a few positive thunderstorms so far, but only once or twice I had a camera around to record it.

Nice! Really close strikes. Do you know where it hit?
@weeardguy
@weeardguy 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks ;) . That's the funny thing. I didn't read anything about damage done to homes, equipment or trees. I even went out the day afterwards to check if I could find anything, but didn't. I happen to remember that all of phoneline-related equipment got fried at the GP, but that could only be the result of an indirect hit: both strikes (and the one without image) should have been more to the right for a direct hit and the first was to my left, just outside of cameraview. It also doesn't make sense that only the GP-building got hit. A strike somewhere lost year, about a 100 meter from my place, did end up doing damage and destroyed the complete electrical installation and connected equipment of 2 homes. Fortunately, no fire started. (unfortunate: my brother was taping this storm but quit doing so (for whatever reason) seconds before the major one hit right in front of him)
@TheSecurityFreak
@TheSecurityFreak 7 жыл бұрын
Maybe it hit a lightning protection system, protected antenna or power line ;) And the power surge fried the equipment?
@weeardguy
@weeardguy 7 жыл бұрын
There aren't any antenna's nearby. Most possible is that it penetrated a landline and indeed the surge fried the equipment. Because of the rather low voltages in those cables, insulation suffers earlier breakdown than the average power-cable (which get damaged quite often as well, allthough they are under ground) Most of the time, when it strikes a powerline, at least a few homes will feel the consequences. When my dad still worked as a system administrator in Amsterdam city centre, a strike 150 meters away could even make the UPS-system beep and report an event of power-surge. Considering the area where he worked (alot of offices and 4-story homes) you'd expect the surge to die out quite quickly, but it didn't. Lightning rods (I think you refer to those with protection systems) are fairly uncommon over here. Most of the time only blocks of flat have 'em, besides church-towers or high modern buildings. Professional lightning surge protection components are even more uncommon.

This was a fairly spectacular and widespread event, even up the east coast of the UK widespread severe storms broke out that night. I was visiting family in Aberdeen (Scotland) and it was very warm and muggy by day, with tower clouds often appearing and fading before the weather finally broke around midnight with a spectacular lightning display.
@weeardguy
@weeardguy 3 жыл бұрын
Ah so I do remember it right ;) Around that time multiple videos did surface from thunderstorms in the UK, with most rather excited comments which led me to believe it was rather uncommon to see such storms in the region where it was recorded.

@weeardguy
@weeardguy 2 жыл бұрын
@@kevinsmeeton9504 The same as in The Netherlands ;) The south, south-east usually gets the worse storms in the first half of the year, while up northwest, where I live, we hardly get anything. This usually slowly changes around July and especially August tends to concentrate the storms higher up. September through November usually gets nice lightning at distance over the North sea going. But no guarantees ;) We've had nasty surprises early in the year as well and my experience is that the more you are ready for a good thunderstorm, the higher the chance nothing will happen and when you get sloppy (don't have cameras ready and such) you suddenly get a big surprise by a storm suddenly forming close to you (or even overhead).

Maybe, but I don't believe in such things ;) If a nearby pre-discharge just connects to the channel coming from the clouds, it will happen, even if the structure, object or ground is conductive or not. High-voltage with initialising ionisation just works totally different than normal electricity and can make things 'conductive' that aren't that conductive in almost any other situation.

A few of those strikes had to have been high amp negatives or positively charged
@weeardguy
@weeardguy 7 жыл бұрын
Most likely high amp negatives. I later read somewhere that the first clouds were somewhere around 600 meter, which is rather high for our understandings (usually 350-400 meter). Positively charged is out of the question: been through those and experienced one even closer than the first strike in this video. The sound like someone blew a whistle and the bomb that went off after it were beyond this earth. The sound of all three does not match positive discharges, which (to my experience) also have a tendency to strike only once: the brightness is very high and they only light the sky for a brief moment, opposed to these that sent a few returnstrikes.

What part of Holland gets the best lightning storms?
@weeardguy
@weeardguy 3 жыл бұрын
Depends a bit on the time of year, but usually the south/south-east (province of North-Brabant, Gelderland and Overijssel) get the best overall. They peak during the summer as warm, moist air from France usually clashes with cooler, more dry air present above the Netherlands (or the other way round, you never know). With the sea still relatively cool and the IJsselmeer (IJssel-lake) also not warmed up yet, storms usually don't make it to the north half of my country. When summer ends, it's usually the coastal regions that get the best (this includes the province of North-Holland, where I live) while the south/south-east is usually lacking thunderstorms. But certain conditions can do weird things. The August 20/21 lightning show that took place last year provided a supercell above the province of Groningen, well in the north-east of the country and by coincidence, May 9, 2021 spawned numerous thunderstorms in the western half of the country (It's hard to believe probably, but the weather can really differ a lot over a distance of just 100 km). Even my province got a few good storms which, this time, produced ridiculuous low, deep thumping thunders. They were so loud my recordings more sound like someone pushes a wave of air into the microphone instead of actual thunder.

Oh I don't consider myself weird at all about my love for thunderstorms ;) . Met a guy once at a busshelter while a hailstorm was being unleashed on the city I was in. Suddenly a brilliant bolt struck about a kilometer away. We both looked at each other and started shouting like 'OH!!! DID YOU SEE THAT ONE!?' the other people at the bus-shelter were looking at us like we had just been released from a mental institution ;) I don't mind. Quite a few years ago, there were some thunderstorm-lovers living near my place. Every clearly visible bolt, you could hear cheering come from between the terraced homes ;) Never knew who it was, but it was nice to know there were more people enjoying the situation instead of trying the impossible: sleep. I like listening to old music, but 1920 is a bit far back to my taste ;) Like stuff from the fourties and onwards, something I got from my dad who has a huge interest in the era you mention and a lot that involves WW2.
