Director George Miller is back in this fantasy tale of a narratologist who finds a Djinn (Idris Elba) who then offers her three wishes, and also tells her his centuries long backstory.
Written by Miller and Augusta Gore, the movie is based on the short story "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye" by A. S. Byatt.

I don’t know if we watched the same movie. It was layered and it contained metaphors that we don’t even get til the end of the movie. Some of the dialogue between them was so beautiful it made me cry. Tilda and Idris need to make more movies together.

agreed. i've watched so many of these reviews and these reviewers are so face value shallow critiques. the amount of depth in this film without it being heavy is what makes this a great film. this is why film today sucks because dotards like this guy are in control and directors are forced to create moving pictures with nothing to say and no talent to say it for simpletons like him.

“I guess this is happening now”, never a great sign when you are thinking this while watching something that is trying to get you emotionally invested.

I loved this film. So creative and full of imagination. It's what story telling in movies is all about! I wish it had been marketed better because it's not getting the attention it genuinely needs.

The best review I’ve seen for this movie was “this was a mess, but it was the kind of mess we should support and encourage”.

Despite all the mixed reviews on this film, I've been extremely looking forward to this. It's George Miller after all, and even "bad" George Miller is nowhere near an average bad movie. Plus a lot of his non-Mad Max films have always been hit or miss with critics and more often than not usually don't break the box office, but there's always a lot to admire in them regardless...

This felt akin to The Illustrated Man for me, just with a fantasy twist. I actually liked the extended hotel room sequences and the dialog between them was interesting to listen to, how they break down the rules of Djinns and wish granting. And of course the flashback sequences are wicked!

You know what this movie reminds me of? The Fall. Which is also a dialogue (and narration) heavy film taking place largely in a confined space but takes the audience through a globe spanning proto superhero epic.

Yeah, there one that literally starts with George Miller saying “Fury Road” out of nowhere and then preceding to talk about this movie. Very bizarre.

I’m one of those people that got a lot out of it. Yes it was a bit dry but it’s about a woman who can’t pick up on social cues and a genie who has been locked up for thousands of years. I personally found the whole thing rather fascinating, poignant and beautiful. Yes it was a bit slow here and there but I was honestly wrapped up in the whole story and thought it went along at a nice slow but still entertaining pace. It also helped I smoked weed beforehand, this is definitely one of those kinds of movies lmao

It seems like the people promoting it had no idea what kind of movie It is. They really should have just stuck to telling people that it's a George Miller movie and that's all they have to say about that. Even if the story doesn't have enough to recommend, it still looks like he's operating at the bleeding edge of modern film language.

I agree. The chemistry between Tilda and Idris didnt work. Their Love didnt come across as a strong attraction. Idris reactions were stone dead. No emotions. Too cerebral. That non attraction ruined the movie for me even right to the end. Idris comes walking up with no emotions. She was acting fine but him, dull lifeless. I'd give that movie a D.

If there was ever a movie that would flop at the box office whether or not the pandemic happened, this flick would be it. I applaud George Miller for getting it made though, shame that it isn't better.

Yea, I figuered i would like this a bit more than some. I see and recognize the flaws which does stop me from really loving it. But I ended up viewing this as something akin to a Neil Gaiman story from The Sandman comics. If I'm using your system, I would end up giving this a B grade
