I am a mom of 8 and I completely agree with you, I love my high chair, bouncy seat, and baby carriers. I had recently gotten a playpen that some one had gotten for me at a good will, for $20 It's a big one, so I can't use it indoors, but we have used the foam mat inside and it has done wonders for lining the hardwood floor I have in my living room so when baby who is learning to run, doesn't hurt herself so badly when she does fall. Other than that, momma you got this...One of the reasons I watch your channel. You get me, and I get you. lol. (even though we don't know each other :) ) Prayers for safe delivery of baby #9, from all of us, Gabriel, Caleb, Abigail, Silas, Judah, Evelyn, Truly, Selah, and myself Mom, Misty. (43)

After five miscarriages, my niece finally had a baby at age 37! She’s been so smart! She’s gathered all things from friends and spent money mostly on books. She uses cloth diapers and I send her disposables for “convenience” every month, with a new book, too. She’s raising the baby bilingual and is in Honduras right now visiting grandma. Now she understands so many of her husband’s ideas about sleep practices… her seventh-month old son is loving his hammock!

Seeing this gave this nearly 58-year-ole gal all the feels. Thank you for sharing just the essentials! I remember using cloth diapers when mine were babies. Having some Oil handy to lightly squirt out of a container always worked miracles for me when changing dirty diapers.

I loved how you share the information about the soaps/baby wash, detergent information as well. This is an area I think some people just aren't aware of. We'll keep praying for a smooth delivery, and good postpartum recovery ❤

Hi Jessica. Just a little thing I learned as a mom. My first had a special blanket he loved to sleep with. I had bought 2 exactly the same but he hated the yellow one. Second time around I bought a large piece of flannel, cut it in 4. Baby had a clean snuggly when needed and we never had a "lost" blanket.

I'm due within the next couple of weeks with my ninth too! My first just turned 18. I agree with your recommendations. I also like having a fold up diaper changing mat to put in my diaper bag. This comes in handy alot especially at random places where a diaper changing table isn't available. A diaper changing basket upstairs and downstairs is good especially when recovering from birth. Just a regular basket with basic diaper changing needs plus some nurse pads and lanolin ointment for nursing in the first month or so.

They have footed sleepers with duel zipper. Great for changing diapers. Good old cloth diapers have so many uses. I didn't know they still made glass bottles, but those were the best.

Fascinating video. I was born in the 50’s and watched my mom (and helped) care for my younger brothers. This was a trip down memory lane to those times! Haven’t heard “rubber pants” in so long!😄 Of course, things were modernized in the 80’s when I became a mom-but still seem old fashioned now! I agree w/ you-simple is often best. I loved those glass bottles, and the glass bottles in which our milk was delivered. They were sturdy!!! Thx for your thoughts on baby care. Wishing you a safe and happy delivery. 😘

I had some muslin squares, very thin cotton and maybe four/five feet long that I used for everything - wrapping baby, mopping up messes, putting under baby before changing, as a sunshade, as a bag, as a towel, and so many years later they’re still going strong as cloths, scarves, etc. I was wrapping one around my neck last week because it’s so cold outside (they are the softest and I choose them before pretty but scratchy if I’m not expecting to take off my coat as they’re getting grubby), and it made me smile as I remembered it used to snuggle up my tiny baby in 1996!

I didn’t realize they were making glass baby bottles again until my grandson was born this summer. I love how glass has made a comeback. My children were born during the time of the disposable plastic bags that fit inside plastic bottle holders. I tried to nurse all of them but struggled with the first one because I worked full time and only had a small battery operated breast pump. It barely worked. With baby 3 and 4, I asked a friend who had an old medela pump if I could use it. It was huge and heavy. The new discreet hands free pumps are amazing. Something else I became aware of this summer. Blessings on the coming baby!

I love this video, Jessica! I'm surprised you were able to find glass bottles back then. They've had a resurgence in popularity, but I couldn't find them in my area before 2018ish. I've had a really good experience with buying cheap car seats at all levels, because by the time the first baby is ready to move out of one, the next baby is ready to move into it. My best advice is to prep your side table. Those first 6 weeks with baby are hard, and you're going to be up many times at night. Having a nice basket of Mom supplies next to your bed is a really great thing you can do for yourself. When my second was born, my niece gifted him with a little dinosaur light that I kept on the side table. It was so adorable and made those night feedings so cozy. ...I noticed that the clothes you have out to show us are looking rather pinkish ;)

Lots of great info! When i had my first baby 45 years ago, I got sucked into the layette list that was, of course, put together by retailers looking to see you more products. Today, influencers are great at making you feel inferior if you dont have all the latest & greatest stuff. And that's all it is, stuff. Your recommendations are spot on-basics because when you're a new mom, the stress of taking care of the excess stuff isn’t worth the money & space they occupy. I'm praying for you to have a healthy last trimester & delivery.

Breast pumps are covered by insurance and Medicaid. They come with bottles, plus you get replacement bottles and replacement tubes for the pump every couple months. I love the suggestion of using glass. I try to avoid plastic as much as possible, but I also remember it being such a relief when the new bottles just showed up in the mail.

Thank you for mentioning scents! My son just had baby #1 My first grandchild. Your list is basically identical to what I told them and purchased for my home as I babysit. The mom is or was untrusting of my basics but has agreed that baby doesn't use or need the bells and whistles, lol. All of mine had sensitive skin and would develop a rash from all those scented items. So has this baby sadly. They switched and no rash. Another is bathtime. They sell huge fancy bathtubs to new parents. A newborn doesn't need them and no baby should ever be alone, regardless of age! Save that huge tub for a toddler and be prepared to sit with them until bath time is over. A large Tupperware tote with a bath sponge that fits in the sink is all we ever used until baby could sit up and play and then we moved to the tub with a larger baby tub. Anything that floats and washes is a toy or can be one. The expensive "bath toys" are really not needed.

Hi Jessica. I was blessed with my first grandchild 7 months ago. I’m 62 so was shocked at all the crazy expensive things that are on the market now. Thankfully friends of theirs loaned them a lot of the baby seats, swing’s etc. But I do enjoy getting him clothes and things. And he’s a big one. 22lbs at 7 months. And I’m so proud of my daughter in law for breastfeeding him exclusively. It’s been really hard work but she’s doing it. I didn’t have luck with breastfeeding so very happy for her.😊

My unnecessary two cents: I would also add that something to swaddle your baby in is helpful. I liked keeping three or four muslins to swaddle my babies for the first couple of months. Also, if your little one is a winter baby, bonnets are the best! Thirdly, a baby food macerater (if you don’t own a food processor) is the best for the first couple of months that you introduce solids. That way your little one can easily try whatever you’re eating. Finally, on the cloth diapering train, I would add wool covers combined with pre folds and Snappis. This is absolutely the most expensive option if you don’t knit, but the most eco-friendly and the gentlest on the baby’s bottom. I do knit and tried wool covers with my fourth baby and it was the best experience! But if you don’t knit, they will cost you a pretty penny and there’s a higher learning curve-but totally worth it and really easy once you get accustomed to the process. Oh! I nearly forgot, BUY USED (except the car seat). There is such an abundance of baby things which are lightly used or even new that you can either get for free from friends or neighbors or very inexpensive at a thrift store or on FB Marketplace. Excellent video, Jessica! I’m praying that you have a smooth delivery.

You are so right about not leaving baby in a bucket car seat. Also it's not safe because when they fall asleep their head relaxes and falls forward, closing up their airway which can cause suffocation. Please don't leave baby asleep in a car seat when you're not driving. Also, make your own baby food. It's not hard, whatever you are having for yourself to eat, take some out and blend it up. These packaged baby food that come in pouches have a bunch of added stuff that isn't nutritional and/or they can have mold inside. Making your baby their own food, you know what's in it. It's fresh and to me, you will have a less picky ( sometimes) eater. New Momma's, you got this, congratulations on your new journey with a new person in your life. It is the most rewarding journey and a true blessing. ✝️🙏🏻💜

My sons’ favorite toys were pots, pans, measuring cups, big spoons, Tupperware, anything they could find in the kitchen! I bought second-hand garage-sale clothes because they grew so fast. That backfired on me later, because my son would only wear “soft pants.” The one gadget that I truly like is the mesh “pacifier” in which you can put fresh fruit that a baby can suck the juice from without choking on the fruit itself-great idea!

Wonderful advice. My children were born in the 70's, winter babies. I had 6 dozen cloth diapers & 6 rubber pants, full set of glass bottles, 4 gowns, 4 footed sleepers, 4 half shirts, baby crib, 6 baby blankets and that was all. We didn't have car seats then but very safe and good thing. My parents bought each child a going home from hospital outfit, which I still have. Such a precious time but little is actually needed, just lots of love. Very excited for you!

I just wanted to add some more info about pumping. Most insurance companies have specific websites that you can go through. Or on different sites, different pumps may be available or covered. As someone who exclusively pumped after my third and met a lot of exclusive pumping moms, I would suggest trying out your pump not in a crisis because you may need different sized flanges (most of the women in my 100,000+ member group needed a size that didn't come with the pump) using the wrong size can be painful and cause more problems. Additionally flange size can change throughout a postpartum journey.
@namastenurse7 сағат бұрын
Lots of the little flannel baby blankets. I used them as blankets, swaddles, and burp cloths. No need for all the separate things. And they will sell swaddles for babies way too old to be using them. If they can roll and you are restraining their arms you are putting them at risk of suffocating. ❤ retired PICU nurse 🙏🏻

It’s fascinating how we have streamlined our baby items after having multiples. There are just a few staples that we find work time and time again. I live in Europe, Romania. From what I know about infant safety a bucket seat is waaaay safer than an a car seat (even if it says it is safe from birth), the position of the body is unsafe. At least for the first year of life. And also setting the bucket/carseat rear-faceing until they are 2 years old.
@threerivershomestead9 сағат бұрын
I think it depends on the seat and the size of your baby. Also, if you read the manuals for convertible seats there is an angle you need to maintain in order for it to be safe for a tiny baby. Always read the manuals!

Yes, things have changed. My oldest will be 39 in the spring. We had a car seat, his daddy made a crib, a stroller, glass bottles that were hand-me-downs and a sterilizer for the stove top, cloth prefold diapers with pins (and the cleanest diapers were burp cloths!), lots of clothes because grandmas went wild! We tried different things for the winter--it was really hard to find something that would fit in the seat. The last child had a baby bag with a "slot" to put the car seat latch through. He was covered at all times. I had a Snugli sack to strap to me, but it was hard to deal with by myself. I thought your ideas were spot on!

I have a good tip that I would recommend to new moms. When pregnant with my first son, my sister-in-law gifted me with premade, reusable cleaning wipes for cleaning baby. She used an old towel, cut into squares and sewed a zig zag stitch around the edges to prevent raveling. I'm not sure how many she made but I had a nice stack of them and just washed them with the diapers to reuse again and again. They saved me tons of money on diaper wipes. Hope that helps some of you.

Awesome video - first I've seen from a real mom with much experience. I do have one item that I consider essential and that is the baby wipe warmer. I don't even have en electric can opener - so easy to just use the twister hand held model. When I saw that gift for my daughter's baby, I thought it was just a gimmic and waste of money BUT soon changed my mind when I was changing my new granddaughter's diaper in the winter and used the warm wipe - she didn't start fussing - but was comfortable. I do think a toilet paper warmer would be way over the top though. LOL

You had me remember the items my mom used with my sister and I. She used cloth diapers and had a chamber pot to soak them in after rinsing them first. We also had one if those wringer washers . When we were babies we never had car seats, but mom used a bassinet on the floor if the car, and later had a over the seat car seat, which I used for my dolls much later. My mom also had this table that was also a feeding chair. Multi purpose table. When I had my son I did purchase at least one or two nice outfits for him. But my son wore onsies, though he was full term when born, he wore 3-6 month sizes till he was over 6 months. So I didn't need to purchase larger sizes till much later. I did nurse him for the first 3 months, pumping when I needed, when I went back to work I was able to pump and store the milk at work in a fridge. I did have to use formula as pumping became harder at work. However when home I still nursed him till he was 1 1/2 years old. I was greatful to go thst far. I was not able to find prefolded cloth diapers when he was born, so used disposable. Glass bottles were not as available for me then, however I never needed to warm the water fir formula as I used spring water room temp. He did great with that. Plus it was easier to transport when going out. What I ended doing when we went out, was use the formula can sample from the hospital. Which held over 10 servings, and I refilled for daily trips, used one bottle and a litter water bottle in a small diaper bag. Which was my to go bag daily. Which I also had 2 spare sets of clothes and about 10 diapers. Yup blow outs happened where ever. I never wanted to be somewhere and not be prepared. We had a car seat that was infant to 5 years and a carriage when he used till he was 3 or 4. We had other items given to us for him like a feeding seat, high chair and a walker. So they got a new life with my son. But after a year I realized he grew out of some things, before he ever used . At least I could pass them on to other folks. Minimize is best.

I know the baby carrier as a baby sling. One child of mine did not like it and the other one did. After they were too big for it, we found our kittens or rabbit liked it to go for a walk outside under our coats in winter (in MN)!

If you want to invest in a good bouncy seat get the baby Bjorn bouncer Yes it’s 200 dollars but it’s a basic bouncy seat that is so smooth that you can rock baby with your foot. I love it so much! I used it for two babies and it’s still going strong and soon it will be used with our third. I tried the cheap ones and the baby bjorn is worth it mamas. Plus to folds flat for easy storage. For crib I use a 4moms breeze plus bassinet play yard. It’s a play yard and crib when baby gets bigger and a bassinet when you have new born and it has a changing table and you can purchase a caddy for supplies like diapers that attaches to it. It’s 300 but so worth the price is you have a small space. We are a family of 5 in a studio apartment so we need every time to be easy to put away when not in use and this 4moms breeze and babybjorn bouncer both collapse easily for storage.

I'm expecting baby #9 in January and I agree with nearly all of the list I just do more clothes so I don't have to wash them as often since I'm doing cloth diapers every other day being able to do clothes a bit less frequently is nice.

Loved this video. My experience has taught me baby wipes are not a must. I did keep a small pack in my diaper bag for my 4 littles. Home, I used a cloth damp with warm water, then dried with another one. If little had a rash, witch hazel worked wonders. Also, if weather allows it. Letting the little one run around outside with no diaper on, granted it has to be a sunny warm day, helped with rash.

We use flannel fabric scraps when we cloth diaper. No wipes necessary!

Had my babies 20 and 18 years ago. If I had it to do over, i would forgo the crib and just get a pack and play to use as a crib. Bassinets are only good a few weeks and a waste of money. Toddler beds are awaste of money too. Go direct to a twin bed. A waist high dresser (get second hand from good will if money is tight) as a changing table and diper storage. A comfey rocking chair with a low foot stool are a good investment and a back saver for nursing mothers. You dont need a nursing pillow because a regular pillow will work but it sure is a nice gift to register for. Spend your money on glass bottles and a good quality breast pump and milk bags so you can freeze your excess breast milk. She is 100% accurate about why you need a pump. Also, pumping into a bottle lets dad feed baby too, which is important for bonding. Use a backpack for a diaper bag. Cloth diapers are the best burp clothes because they are absorbent and big. Umbrella strollers are easiest to manipulate into and out of cars, buses, airports. A baby carrier (like a bjorn) was an awesome thing and i would consider a must. I used cloth diapers with my sons- i did the math and it saved us $0.40 per diaper change but you have to be willing to do the laundry. However, after 2 babies, it amounted to hundreds of dollars saved so it was well worth it. I my sons also did not have the diaper rash problem when wearing cloth. When a sitter put them in disposable, their poor little bums would be so raw! One last suggestion, i had my husband install a dimmer light switch in the nursery. That way i could have light to see for midnight changes but it would be low level enough that it wouldnt wake the baby completely.

You forgot bed sheets and pads for baby's bed. Me and mother just made them from a full sheet upcycle.

Great video (as always)! I’m due with my second in late January and the nesting is kicking into high gear 😂❤ I also can’t recommend glass bottles enough! I exclusively breastfed my first but every so often (especially while traveling) bottle feeding pumped milk came in very handy. The glass Avent Naturals worked perfect for us. No nasty lingering smells or stains after a lot of use, and they are amazingly durable, even without a silicon sleeve.

You are spot on! Loved cloth diapering. My baby could not wear disposables due to horrible rashes from them. I used mostly the Gerber flats and rubber pants.

Large soft Muslin Squares! Perfect for feed time/burping. For both baby and Mom! 😄 Useful for using as a spare swaddle if stuck. White is best (as is everything baby for a hot wash). Good quality ones (like from John Lewis) last years and are brilliant t-towels inbetween babies. I also couldn’t do without the thin toweling (dries quicker) ski slope for bath time. The simplest ones are the best, IMO. Baby’s bottom swills nicely and head is easy to wet sponge clean without soap going into eyes. Zero danger of slipping when you take one hand off baby to reach for the towel. Great video Jessica. So exciting.

Over here in England they recommend not to let baby sleep in a car seat or a bouncer for too long because baby’s head/neck muscles can’t hold their head up for long and it can slump over and baby can suffocate. They advise for baby to be put to sleep on a flat safe surface like a pram/carrycot or in their moses basket/cot wherever they sleep at home. Also baby should only be in the car seat in the car. As for your recommendation I 200% agree with everything, some things like clothes are outgrown in a matter of weeks and some things like bottles etc need to last longer so definitely choose where you’re going to spend your money. Also gowns and sleepsuits a newborn needs nothing else and a gown really works perfectly!! ETA you can get little signs to go on prams pushchairs etc to let people not to know it’s ok to touch them. I think the younger generation are getting better as we know the risks so don’t touch them like older people do!!
