One time when I was a kid I was watching PBS, for five minutes a digital background, square green lines, with roller-coaster tracks, one mining cart just continuously going in circles around the track and glitches in-between every few seconds appeared a face saying something I couldn't understand. I was mesmerized and couldn't look away, I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen on TV at that age.

@@davidrobert2007 Same! A month ago I found a Canon SX700 HS at Value Village with the 32gig micro card still in it for $10!!! There were tons of family photos and videos of a trip to Africa (looked like a Safari tour)... Wow! Sadly, there was no way of returning the card to the family, I have no clue who they are! But, now I know why these are showing up at thrift stores... I took it along for a recent trip and found it was easier to use my Samsung cellphone for pictures and video than carrying the bulky camera ...

Phony nostaglia kills! I grew up in the 80's and when the music sounded like this it meant the car stereo was eating your expensive tape. This was followed by CD players that skipped every time someone sneezed. People would break into your car just to steal your music! Low tech is bad tech - nothing comforting about stuff that doesn't work right. I am extremely grateful for modern tech and love the fact that I can put hundreds of lossless albums on a USB stick which hides in my armrest.

@@tpink3792 Phony nostalgia? No. Considering I was a young boy when I heard music on tapes and on low quality videos that had sound quality nearly identical to this video, I find it quite comforting despite it being low tech. Different perspectives my friend. When making my original comment I was making it a bit half assed and didn’t quite explain in depth, and was mainly referring to the very first song in this video as my main reference point for the sound quality I was reminiscing on. Sorry for any confusion

Was the visuals on the tape? if not it will be a ADAT or VHS tape being used in place of an official ADAT. ADAT's are the Alesis Digital Audio Tape, which is a magnetic tape format used for the recording of eight digital audio tracks onto the same S-VHS tape used by consumer VCRs. Would be interesting to see if the tracks, separate audio channels, could be stemmed out.

im quite sure this is BoC, very early BOC. It can be a demo tape of some kind that got lost and ended up in the thrift store. It happens. The amount of matching samples and sounds, motives that are to be recognized in older and newer work really makes me think this is BOC made demo tape post old tunes but pre official album releases. Similar drum patterens, sampling, textuers, ... For me its to uncanny. Definitely because you have the precursor of more recent racks on there, which is something you can also notice on their other unreleased tapes.

If I hadn't seen this some months ago and grow quite fond of some of the tracks on here, I don't think I would've started my exploration of Boards of Canada some days ago (though there were a few external factors that prompted me to do so as well, but this video was a big one) BoC's music is so beautiful, it calms me like nothing else. @@rfcalm The possibilities are 1) BoC decided to put out music which doesn't particularly sound like their style on an obscure VHS tape, and didn't release that music anywhere else or 2) some nobody of a music producer wanted to get their music more exposure so they threw in a couple of BoC tracks among theirs and invented a backstory. I won't say this *definitely* isn't BoC but I find possibility 2) much more likely.

Heard about this today from a DJ on wirelessfm. It certainly sounds like Boards of Canada in parts but the question is why would they do a mix to VHS with a barely moving video and lose it in the USA. Its seems they rarely do gigs so my theory of them messing with tape editing on a tour bus is out. If the found tape part of the story is real then great, someone has done a mix tape and put it on VHS with ambient footage to watch whilst stoned. It's just the sort of thing I would do. Most likely explanation is that someone has created an internet mystery to see how many people bite. Lots of these found VHS tapes are obviously fake.
@bmmaaate
@bmmaaate 2 жыл бұрын
It's also a perfectly feasible explanation that a record company was looking to put out a BoC video and acquired a mixtape from the band that was knocked up and forgotten about over a weekend and then added some quick visuals as a demo and then the project was abandoned. The tape from the office clearout went home in a box, got mixed up with some crap 80's movies and ended up at a thrift store.

I love your theories, thanks for sharing them. I would agree that the hoax theory seems most feasible. People have been talking about it in Discord servers and seem to be mostly questioning the production value. I think that it fits with the 'a few old tunes' vibe. I just don't see why something like this would be found in the USA. Another thing is that the video got a copyright claim for 'Seeya later'. Assuming the original uploader got the same claim, it is weird that they wrote the description as if they didn't know any of the music on there. I did not think that they could've lost it on tour. If anyone has any connection between BoC and the state this was found in, it could at least be somewhat believable that this is an old BoC tape. That's mostly why I think it's fake. There's no reason for it to be found in a random thrift store in Pennsylvania. Still, nonetheless, I love the entire collection of music and I think it's a real shame the original uploader deleted their whole channel. I might as well sample the tracks that nobody seems to know in the future :P

Now that I think about it, if BOC made this it would probably have ALOT more samples, considering the fact how old tunes had so many, and a lot of the 5 albums never released to the public had uncleared samples which were part of the reason that BOC thought recovering their old music would be impossible. They talked about it in an interview going over old tapes and cassettes that they had, but the samples were everywhere and they also said finding the source would be impossible cause it's all from around 20 - 30 years back. At least, I think. I'm pretty sure I saw it on BOC Pages. It also feels like whoever had made this tape was really going for a Twoism style on some of the tracks, like 18. But, some of the more bassier and more hip-hop-y drums like on 13, or 19, could be more like MHTRTC. Just had a relisten after my comment 4 months ago and thought about this.

Back in the late 60's (ancient history to most of you) a host of College FM radio stations across the US popped up as part of the schools curriculum for Communication Degrees, this gave a window of opportunity for artistic audio experimentation to many people of all walks of life. They would often create, weird, strange and sometimes amazing collages of sound using fragments from many recordings as well as live performances of music most often by unknown composers and by "people just fucking around". At times combined with the spoken word, sound effects and ambient sounds. Sometimes the "Music" was recorded to be played and or distributed to be sold OR at times it was preformed "live" in the studio as part of a collective Art Project (Think Laurie Anderson here). This tradition still continues to this day on College Campuses world wide. They're usually broadcasted very late night, when most of the world is asleep. I often set my Reel 2 Reel to record during those hours back then. The following mornings I discovered rare gems of magic on those tapes. After 60 years, I still have some of them.

I remember those days. It was extremely exciting because at that time there was and never had been anything like it broadcast on radio before. It was a whole new world. College stations also played records that you would never hear on radio normally. Like to hear Pink Floyd’s Ummagumma selection The Narrow Way or obscure tracks from Donovan albums. This was stuff that was never played on radio so it was jaw dropping to hear it. Radio should be that free again and not just on college stations. There’s something about a broadcast with possibly thousands listening simultaneously that is totally different than hearing something like a stream or a KZbin playlist.

I discovered this on a reddit post in a thrift store forum. The guy was posting it to see what other thrift store junkies had to say about it. It sat on youtube for 2 months and had not many views. I found the post in a thrift store facebook group reposted from reddit. wish I would've saved the original post. The reason I say there's more or seems to be, because a day ago a channel emerged with strange coding on it. when you decipher the coding in the first video, it decodes into a link to another video and in that other video is gps coordinates to the said thrift store where the person supposedly found the vhs. It looks like there's more material to come about.

I think there are several aspects speaking for an old mixtape by Boards Of Canada and others don't. Let's debate! Pro BoC: 1. Tonal matches There are some sounds that appear on later BoC songs. First one I recognised is the sequenced synth that fades in at 3:53 which has a very similar tone character to the sequencer synth in Finity. Than there is this drone track starting at 18:06 which has the LFO Noise in it which is close to the LFO Noise on Diving Station. The "covers" of Boquarant and Seeya Later seem for many of you be THE reason that this tape is fan made. In the Boquarant "cover" the lead synth sounds less detailed than Boquarant but the resonating rhodes have almost the same tonal character. The Seeya Later "cover" is incredible close to the original. The Subbass sounds exactly like the Subbass on Seeya Later. Than there comes in this highly significant detuned resonating pad/lead synth. This sound is so specific, it's extremely unlikely that someone else is able to recreate this sound and hitting the tonal character so close. It's not hard to make a synth that acts like this, I'm a music producer with lot of experience, I think I know what I'm talking about but it will sound slightly different. You can hear this when you listen to covers like the Roygbiv Cover by Peter Carpenter. It's detailed and comes close to the original. He's hitting every note but the tonal character of his instruments still is quite different to the original Roygbiv by BoC. I'm not that super familiar with all Old Tune Tapes by BoC as I'm with their full length albums but I'm sure there are more examples hidden on this VHS tape of sounds with a similar tonal character to sounds and instruments from BoCs Old Tunes. 2. The whole sketchy style of this tape fits their style used on their Old Tunes. There are similar cuts and use of samples from ads or TV shows. With their Old Tunes they showed that as teenagers they made this kind of music. There are probably hundreds of sketchy tunes lying around someone's basement on an old cassette which they got as a close friend by BoC before BoC started to officially release albums on Warp Records. 3. Someone posted this before and it's more of a gut feel argument than an objective consideration but I feel the same and I think it's an important one. This person said that these tunes here give him a feeling that only Boards Of Canada is able to make him feel. I have the same. On this VHS tape are some tracks that are resonating deeply with my soul and triggering weird feelings in my subconscious which only Boards Of Canada is able to. 4. Not much people are able to copy the unique sound by Boards Of Canada. There are simply not many people who could copy their music coming so close to their sound and those tonal characters. I know there are some people like Christ., µ-Ziq, Tycho, Casino Versus Japan, Loess or the Cult 48 guess by another comment who make music similar to BoC but it's just similar. They have very own sub-styles and if it was one of them you'd hear! Cult 48s style comes closest to this tape but not close enough. Their beats are more layered, with a much heavier use of glitch effects. Their melodies are more complicated. The melodies on this tape are much more direct. It's just really improbable that out there is an unknown talent that is able to create a vhs tape like this. It's simply more probable that this tape is by Boards Of Canada themselves. Contra BoC: 1. Lot of these tracks sounds like BoC but other parts just doesn't sound like them at all. 1.a. This organ sound starting at 11:26 and the way it's played, the rhythm is very untypical for BoC. Also the drums have an impactful element in them which sounds too heavy for a BoC tune. On the other hand almost every other instrument in this track sounds a lot like BoC. 1.b. This whole guitar track starting at 20:18 sounds nothing like BoC. They didn't used guitars back than, certainly not in such a pop-song style. Also this sequenced poly synth has a filter automation which sounds too advanced. And this whole song has some pop-styled transitions which doesn't sound like BoC at all. In my opinion this track is the most suspect, not the "covers". Only way I could think of BoC making such an untypical track is them being teenagers in love with the unreachable, popular girl on their high school and trying to make a less weird and more pop-styled track to impress her. ;D Neutral arguments: 1. Some comment it's unlikely that an old VHS tape by our favourite Scottish brothers appears in the US. Why not. They gave cassette tapes to family and friends. Of course it's possible one of their family members or friends lived in the US and over the years this VHS tape found it's way to a thrift store cause someone decided to tidy up his attic. In my opinion a mere geographical argument has no weight. 2. Some argue that this is a fanmade scam trying to build up a mystery so that his fanmade music gains a lot of attention. What a shitty promotion would that be. If you want attention for your own project, it's dump to copy the sound of another famous band just to make everyone think it could be them. You would want the whole world to know it's you making those tracks. Yes maybe in some weeks someone is disclosing the secret saying it all was his work with a devilish laugh but I really doubt that someone is trying to promote his own stuff in such a devious way nowadays. I might be wrong but at the end of my analysis I think the pro arguments predominant the contra arguments. I think this VHS tape has some real Boards Of Canada stuff on it but still I have some doubts left. If you liked my analysis I would like to ask you to check out my own music. I released an album highly inspired by BoC, Aphex Twins Selected Ambient Works and some clearly hearable Shoegaze influences a year ago called "tales of a beautiful life" but it got lost in the depths of the Internet and gained no attention which was quite frustrating. So I would be grateful if some BoC fans would check it out cause I think people who love Boards Of Canada would appreciate my music.

The brothers have said themselves that they've made music that doesn't fit their main style, it's still on the table for the songs that sound more like AFX or even Autechre. That's a really good analysis.

It would not surprise me if many of our made in china recording devices send our best works in progress overseas where the good ideas get analysed, extracted, bastardized, and released to mainstream artists to make a killing from... Thus bypassing anyone with actual integrity . cha-ching cha-ching --- thee end .

As a person who has remade many BOC on my channel, these sounds are very close to BOC, even the music theory seems right on some of them. I have no idea if it is BOC or not but if it is not, it is someone who understands it very well. Maybe the person who did it is in Redondo Beach, California because I hear some radio from there.

This is great stuff! I think it’s from the 1992-1994 days. Music by the ORB, KLF, Union Jack, FSOL and more influences here.. I hear jungle drum beats were famous back in these days. Ambient music was starting to evolve.

This is bizarre! I had recorded the sky in my backyard on an entire super vhs tape when the 'Rods' , supposed entities that were invisible to the naked eye, were a big thing back in the 90's. Never knew what happened to it, if I had recorded over it or what.

I came across this while reading some comments off a video I posted on KZbin 14 years ago with a BoC soundtrack. Only to find this surfaced five days ago. The wind is howling outside, I live alone in the desert now, and this all seems to make sense somehow.

Thinking this is a ADAT or VHS tape being used in place of an official ADAT. Not sure if you can store visuals alongside audio tracks but worth finding out, were the visuals on the tape also? If they were am still thinking the master was recorded with the visuals as there would be no change in audio quality as it was likely recorded on ADAT. ADATS came out in 92 and were a staple of project recording studio's by the mid 90's and still in common use in the early 2000's, I used them in a recording studio myself in the early 2000's. ADAT's are the Alesis Digital Audio Tape, which is a magnetic tape format used for the recording of eight digital audio tracks onto the same S-VHS tape used by consumer VCRs. Would be interesting to see if the tracks, separate audio channels, could be stemmed out.

I thought the same thing -- had a friend who had a recording studio and did some tracks on ADAT with him in the late 90's. If memory serves the cassettes looked just like VHS tapes. But like you, not sure about having video on ADAT. If there is a recording engineer following this he/she might know.

@@robgrano6814 you can use standard VHS tape in an adat so it would be interesting to see.

Interesting. Reminds me of a series of recordings i made on master tape during weekends at the attic of a dear friend doing synth / bass / drums sessions, in the late 1980s early 1990s.

@@DanFingermanOctopus Unfortunately all my master tapes, including the actual recordings of our band, were stored in the wrong fashion, since after i moved in 2003 i found out the magnetic layer on them had vanished ... So i don't have them anymore and of course never made duplicates ... Basically the attic sessions were a lot of noodling, but i'm sure there were a few gems in between ... Sorry about that.

I’m going to use some deductive reasoning here; if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is BOC 😀
