I grew up sewing my own clothes in Portland, OR in the 1960s. I loved the fabric stores there! Remember The Daisy Kingdom and The Fabric Depot? I loved Fabricland and The Mill Outlet store too. I love this creative upcycle, Julia. Thank you.

Yes I remember The Daisy Kingdom! We only lived in Portland for a brief time but they had great fabric stores. I also shopped at the Pendleton Wool Outlet. I got lots of thread etc from there.

So cute. You have a great eye to put fabrics together. My first job in high school was at ClothWorld (now Joann).

I didn't remember that Joann's use to be ClothWorld. I managed a Joann's store also for a short time before my family.

I'm originally from the northeast and the first job I had as a teenager was at So Fro Fabrics, I learned so much there...and I agree, I probably still have notions from there......😆

Cute project, Julia! 😃 We had Cloth World stores in Florida, which eventually became JoAnn Fabrics & Crafts stores. I hadn’t thought about Cloth World in years! Thanks for the trip down memory lane… 😊

We had several Cloth World stores here in Wichita, KS. The one I shopped at as a young woman is now a Dollar Tree. Also, the local TG&Y stores had fabric, notions and patterns. I used to spend a good amount of time looking through the pattern books there. So much so that I was often mistaken for an employee!

Hi Cat, I didn't remember that Cloth Worlds became JoAnn's. I worked at JoAnn's for a while too. I really got around-haha. Thanks so much for watching! Julia

I just found your channel when the dandelion free motion popped up. I do some. I dont quilt but took a class to learn writing and simple art with machine. Ive upcycled clothing all my life since about 10. Im 67 now. As time went on the more combined fabric look has got me interested. In 70s I made skirts from circular tablecloths. Now I do things like replace cap sleeves on tshirts with ones made from teen tops lace etc. I have to wear longer in my old age. I also lengthen tops but Im stuck on only using one fabric to do this. Its hard for me. Im the person that wears all tops with black pants or jeans. Yardage is too expensive so I want to use multiple fabrics from clothing. A peek at all your videos has me knowing you are my style! I need a mannequin even just a store one. Just to not being doing everything in the flat!
@stitchesbyjulia2 жыл бұрын
HI, I'm so glad you are enjoying my videos. It sounds like we do similar things. I'm 63 and agree with the longer styles. The mannequin is a game changer. I really like the kind that spins. I found mine at a flea market, it is not my size but it works! Happy stitching! Julia

Of course I remember Northwest Fabrics, I’m in the Midwest, sure enough. Memories are good, thanks. ❤ (and I love what you did with the shirts. My bodkin is easily over 35 years old. No reason to replace it if works.

I'm from Toronto, Canada and I loved Fabricland, they're still there in shopping malls! I lived in Wisconsin and saw the last Northwest Fabrics close, now I thrift through my stash like many sewists! Awesome content, Julia, thanks for keeping it fresh and real; I'm always inspired by your channel! Cheers, eh?

Oh my heck Julia. Did I just see you use a right handed cutter backwards with your left hand???!!! I use both hands so I actually purchased a left handed cutter with a handle that I can't turn around, but I never thought to turn my right handed cutter around!!!! You're a genius!!! 🤗 (now back to your video, lol!!!) 😆 Brenda 🌼
@stitchesbyjulia2 жыл бұрын
Yep- I cut with both hands:) Growing up, we didn't have a left-handed scissors in our house so at a very young age I cut with my right hand. Now I automatically pick up my scissors with my right hand and my rotary cutter and snips with my left! Amazing how our minds work...Thanks for watching, Julia
@brendaseverns97042 жыл бұрын
@@stitchesbyjulia how funny! My grandma purposely tried to make me right handed as a baby! So, there are things I do only right handed and things I only do left-handed and then there's cutting fabric with both! 😆😍 I'm so happy your video included that! 🤗

Oh my goodness!!! I’m from Portland Oregon and do remember Fabricland. I lived about a mile from the SW Portland store. Now, Portland has very little to offer in fabric stores. Some closures were retirement related others closed for financial reasons….so sad.
@stitchesbyjulia2 жыл бұрын
Fabric stores are going by the wayside. It is really sad. Most are mostly crafts and very little fabric. Fabricland had such high quality fabrics. Miss it.

I love this so much I tried using heat and bond heavy and I think I ruined my piece I was working on it was just to heavy. I did keep the image i was going to add to my flannel so might try a different way to apply the applique to the back of my shirt. Thanks for this i really do appreciate it. I love this style and this is the first one ive seen that comes close to what i was looking for ❤.
@stitchesbyjulia Жыл бұрын
Hi, the heat n bond heavy is too thick and hard to sew through. The lite will also stiffen it some but is much softer. Steam a Seam 2 is also a wonderful product with a soft feel. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

I loved Northwest Fabrics - I think St. Cloud and Duluth. MN. were the 2 locations I frequented. It seems It is Joann Fabrics and Hobby Lobby now but buy the most at thrift or online stores.

Both the St. Cloud store and the Duluth store were in the same region as the Fargo store. So many great memories. Miss those stores.

I worked part-time at the Northwest Fabric store in Madison, Wi back in the '80s. I wish we still had more variety in fabric stores, not just Joann. Joann is a nice store, but more choice would be welcome.
