The cabinet is certainly from Germany. The sticker on the back is actually a train ticket. The cabinet was shipped via train to Köln (Cologne) in May of 1922.

Hi folks. Mortar and pestle are implements used since ancient times to prepare ingredients or substances by crushing and grinding them into a fine paste or powder in the kitchen, laboratory, and pharmacy. The mortar is a bowl, typically made of hard wood, metal, ceramic, or hard stone, such as granite. SO re your PESTLE..... THE T IS silent =- so it sounds like PESSELL Hope this helps. Usually, a wood piece, tiny chunk of trim, would be at corner of shelf beneath the shelf. I would move up bottom two shelves, add a center wood track for drawer, Add small metal brackets on inside of glass door...so all is secure. Also, look for a secret compartment at base ....often has hidden hinge so you could hide valuables there. That is a coat and wrap closet, drawer for long evening gloves. Would have been full mirror on front. Sat in foyer or hallway.

Hi Knorpp family - I see someone else has already commented that the 't' in pestle is silent. Also, you showed us some of your lovely plates the other day and one had a picture of Belvoir Castle, England, on it - Belvoir is pronounced 'Beaver' and is from the French word that translates as, 'beautiful view'. Hope that little bit of info is of interest to you. Love watching you thrift - so jealous, as we don't have such big thrift stores here in the UK 💗

I got really excited about the tag on the piece of furniture and commented on the first comment about it. Then I saw many more comments and decided to make a new comment sharing what I understand of it and taking into account other people's suggestions. Feel free to correct me and fill in the gaps ;) The tag on the back of the piece of furniture is German and says that it was taken to Cologne from Klein Steinheim (near Frankfurt) by train: 1. Line: Eisenbahndirektionsbezirk: Frankfurt am Main (railway administration district Frankfurt by the river Main, so the company responsible for the transport maybe?) 2. line: Zeichen und ? oder Adresse: GBS 126 (sign and? or address: 3 letters - maybe GBS - and 126) 3. Line: Von Station: Klein Steinheim (from station: Klein Steinheim) 4. line: Am Mai 22 (on date May 22. It could be the 22nd of May, but in German the day is usually written before the month, so day/month/year. There is also space left to put the exact day, so I would go with other commenters of this video and suggest that it's may in 1922) 5. line: Nach Station: Köln Rhein (to station: Cologne by the river Rhein) 6. line: Empfangsbahnhof (station of the destination) Part on the left side: Abs.:?? Steinheim (abs is short for Absender which is the person sending the object. I can't read the first two words, I assume it's a familyname. The last word is Steinheim again. I hope this is helpful :)

Adding my 2 cents worth on your new cabinet. It's possibly a Renaissance Victorian Linen press from Germany. The centre oval was most likely to have been a piece of wood which has been replaced with glass...probably because the wooden oval panel had become damaged or cracked from age.

For bigger pieces try auctions, estate sales, tag or garage sales, and also restoration building centers that tear down old buildings and sell the contents. I bought a huge butlers pantry cabinet and an old back bar for my home, for a fraction of what it would have cost to build. Love hunting antiques.

In Mexican dishes they use a molcajete, which is made from lava rock, it is very porousa and will wear down with use. You're never supposed to wash them with cleaners, only rinse if totally necessary, but mainly just wipe out. You will notice them get very deep after many uses, my grandmother's was super deep from all her years using it. I'm not sure you'll get the same outcome with anything beside lava rock.. hope this helps. Oh and any Mexican stores should sell them😉
@bobgrauer3 жыл бұрын
To reinstall the Cabinet door take the bottom pivot out, then push the door up onto the upper pivot then push the lower pivot up into the hole in the door with the door at 90 degrees to the cabinet replace the bottom pivot screws. It is also possible that the upper and lower pivots have both been taken off the cabinet at same time and reversed their position top where bottom should be and bottom where top should be, I think the longer pivot should be on the top, this would only be the case if the door will pass over the lower pivot when pushed all the way up onto the top one then lower it over the lower pivot.

16:05 The sticker on the back of the cabinet is from the Railway Office in Frankfurt on the Main (river). The Adress is abbreviated G.B.S. 126, which can be either"Georg-Busch-Straße" (G.B. Street) No. 126 in Hanau-Steinheim, or "Gutenbergstraße" (Gutenberg Street) No. 126 in Hanau-Klein Auheim. I guess it would be the first Adress. On May 22 (it doesn't say the year !!!) it was sent to Cologne (="Köln on the Rhein" (river)) I daresay to make it to the US it either went further on trains via Belgium and the Netherlands to a major port (like Rotterdam) to make its way across the Atlantic. First of all the print is old, like that used in the 1930s and the handwriting is also an obsolete one, used by people born before 1900.This specific handwriting is called "Sütterlin". I wonder why there is no name decipherable, perhaps it was only the sticker for the transport, leaving out the owner's name or the one who sent it off. It all is a mystery and it is probably worthwhile to check into inhabitant lists from Hanau-Steinheim around the 1930s, comparing citizen lists in North Carolina, people who immigrated during the 1930s or 1940s to that state. Good Luck in your search for former owners! Have a wonderful new year, despite all the hazards worldwide. Yours Marianne

I heard Chris Kimball discuss the mortar and pestle vs. a food processor this past year (either on America's Test Kitchen, Cook's Illustrated, or Milk Street) and a mortar and pestle will crush the cells of the spices/herbs/etc, which releases much more flavor than a food processor, which cuts and shreds the food material.

Wow, this new bargain of yours is exciting and beautiful ! I have a piece of furniture ( in German it's called ' Sekretär' ) that has the same kind of wooden ornaments on it. My grandparents found it during WW2 in an abandoned basement of a house here in northern Germany they had just bought and it has been in the family ever since. I'm actually sitting at it while writing this and I'm all thrilled to see something very similar over at your place. The tag on the back of your wardrobe says it't from Cologne. I guess it used to be either for clothes ( the shelves put in later) or a linen cabinet.
