How does it make it free? You still need power to charge the batteries.

I have some solar panels to charge the batteries. They charge up all day and i can run the A/C for a couple hours when it is really hot out. It really helps with the power bill. If i had more solar and more batteries i would run it all day.

ThriftStore Hacker where do you connect the solar panel? Is there a way to bypass the AC cord to accept solar DC to charge the battery as the UPS must have a charge controller to the battery? Or do you still need to purchase a solar charge controller and connect to the battery terminals and use the UPS outlets as an inverter? Thanks
@ThriftStoreHacker8 жыл бұрын
Cyrus Ramsey I use panels and a controller hooked to the battery. the UPS is used because it is a cheap or free way to get a power inverter. I'm currently looking for a cheap gas or diesel engine to turn an alternator. if I find all the bits over the winter I will be able to power more than the a/c

Before everyone turns into a cowboy and rips their speaker out, when you turn the unit on, push the button twice, and it should silence it. You can also plug it into a computer and download a free program to silence it. You can also put a switch in series with it, to turn it off and on. Put some terminals that go to the battery so that you can put a voltmeter on it to check the battery level, or plug it into your computer to tell you how long you can operate it before charging or changing out the battery. When the battery goes down to a dangerous level where it can be ruined, the speaker will make a continuous noise, so keep that in mind before you silence its ability to tell you something is wrong!

Could you hook up an alternator or solar panels directly to the inverter of a smart ups? How will overpowering or underpowering the ups affect the unit?
@TheHuntermj8 жыл бұрын
By underpower I mean the correct voltage input but trying to draw more watts than available, and by overpower I mean correct voltage input but having excess amps avalable from the alternator.
@ThriftStoreHacker8 жыл бұрын
Matt Hunter you could use an alternator but you will still want a battery for the alternator to keep the power consistent. the alternator is internally regulated so it will cycle if the battery needs charging.

Mainly I wanted to use the UPS as the inverter for a generator, would a normal car battery be ok for the purposes of power smoothing? Also would I be better off getting multiple low wattage ups units or one high wattage one or does it not matter?
@ThriftStoreHacker8 жыл бұрын
Matt Hunter a car battery should be fine. just make sure if your inverter runs on 12 or 24v. the one I'm using in the video runs 2 12v batteries making 24v. the higher wattage UPS the better. make sure you add a fan to cool the circuit board.

xopex industries a motorcycle battery will run it for 20min and I would not charge it with the UPS. if you are doing a car audio setup it is all 12v DC already and the UPS is useless . you can hook up a charger to the motorcycle battery (see my other vids) and get the 12v DC you desire and charging.

Just make sure you open the APC case and make the cooling better. put some fans on the control board to handle the heat. If you have a 2000w supply make sure to run it under 1500w or lower to get a long life out of the device. Some 12v computer fans do a great job shedding the heat.

The amperage is a capacity of the battery system which can be pulled from it,. The inverter would be pulling up to 7 amps from the battery, not the batteries pushing x number of amps.

@ThriftStoreHacker7 жыл бұрын
Scott Shuman Yes. There is startup money involved. You can find these inverters at thrift stores and garage sales for 10 bucks. the smaller ones that run on 12v can be had for almost free. The batteries are best bought remanufactured if you have a local company that does it. My local guy remanufactures batteries and sells them for half the price of new ones with a 2 year warranty. The charging system is where the money goes. I already have 1000w of solar so I can run this box most of the day on the electric trike battery pack. I also have plans for a diesel engine powered charger. I can make it run on waste oils. my projects are never done and are as cheap as possible to build. As I aquire more cheap junk I will come back to this project. Garage sale season is coming. Thanks for watching!

Those 2 batteries are not the same. one is a u1r and the other is an u1r-7 same battery but the poles are reversed. Those batteries will only run the unit for about 20min but are small and easy to use for a demo. I use two big 60 amp hour wheelchair batteries backed up by a solar rig to run it at home. As for the battery light not being on.. if you hold the power button for 10 or so seconds it shuts the whole inverter off. Since it is not plugged into the wall the only light you see when you turn it on is THE BATTERY LIGHT! Next thing. I run this channel as a hobby for showing off my experiments. Why the hell would i try to scam people. How about asking some questions before you criticize my video?

your gonna kill that compressor and motor inside that ac unit with that square wave UPS. youll need to get an UPS that does pure sinewave output
@lands14595 жыл бұрын
i doubt it's square wave. if it's designed for computers, it's gonna be a sine wave.
@CotyRiddle5 жыл бұрын
@@lands1459 smps (computer psu fall in this catagory) have no issues witha modified sine wave (Square wave) as they have a bridge rectifier (Full wave) that turns that 115 volts into 170 volts then get bumpped up to around 400 volts dc before it is then switched on and off in the Khz range. you could literally run a computer psu off DC provided you have a high enough voltage. most if not all budget inverters and UPS are modified sine wave (Square wave) with only the really expensive models (akin to the ones used in the it industry for server rooms) do a pure sine wave. do your research. How ever as a side note some spu's with actvie PFC have issues with modified sine wave inverters.

Your going to want some kin of a cooling fan blowing over the heatsinks inside that UPS. Mostly because the inverter in there was never intended to handle that kind of an inductive load. You can get away with a few fans and phone chargers. You could even run a computer for a long time on that setup. The inductance of the compressor of that AC unit is dangerous to attach to that UPS. I mean, I know it was cheap but why brick it if you don't have to? Putting bigger heat sinks in would help too, like from an old computer power supply or something. The one's in there were designed to run for a maximum of five minutes while a computer shuts down. If you do nothing else, keep an extinguisher handy just in case... I want to see more videos, not an obituary... Just be careful man...
@ThriftStoreHacker7 жыл бұрын
i am very careful when it comes to AC power. As for the fan idea you are extremely correct. I fried the 1st ups i had due to overheating. I have a different one that is the same make/model and run two large computer fans over the main board. Works pretty good and i use it to run the air conditioner in my shed.
