This is going to help me a lot when I got to finish my Victorian inspired pirate costume for Renfest. I wasn’t sure how to get the shape was my problem.

I forgot to mention that if you happen to wear the hat out in the rain an it gets floppy, don't worry. Just set it out to dry in the shape you want and it'll be fine.

I like the list of ingredients required at the beginning. It helps.

I recently restored an old felt hat of mine that had lost it's shape. And I found dabbing it with warm water then stuffing it with balled up paper and leaving it by a radiator to dry was enough to get the stiffness back. However, it was a pretty expensive hat when it was new, about fifty quid so it may have been made with a different process that allows that to work.

Yeah the ones I use for this are untreated cheap floppy felt hats that thrift stores. Reassuring to hear that an expensive hat can be saved that way. There's also hat stiffening spray but I believe that stuff is just watered down glue or starch and the glue or starch meathods can leave a hat blotchy.

Thank you very much for this video. I searching a long time to find a nice hat for my pirate, now I know to make them

Glad I could help! Careful using too much glue on the crown of the hat. I've gotten headaches from making them too stiff.

This is so inspiring!!! Me and my friends like to do a sort of larp when the Renaissance fair comes around but it's mostly between the three of us. We come up with our own characters and play them for the day. (Also we get girls scout badges for it ) it's super fun!!!!

That sounds so fun!! If you're ever at the Southern California Renfaire come to Rogue's Reefe and say hi! I perform there with my band Sportive Tricks.

Lovely thing about felt hats is that you can stretch them. Get it wet and pull on the crown and band area.

Where did you find the feathers for your hat? I looked at JoAnn's but the feathers they had were too small.

Pirates never talked that way...One actor in the Disney movie Treasure Island was from England and that was his particular and that was pretty much how he spoke in real life, so his character had that sound...Pirates were from all over the world, they all spoke normally as we do now, so there was no "pirate accent" at all....its not like every pirate in the world was from the same place. Pirates did not go around talking in that ridiculous way of speaking anymore than non pirate people did.
