I've had a lot of requests to recommend some mystery and thriller books that have a murder but don't have violence on the page. Here are some recommendations - both new and older - that are a little less dark but every bit engaging and worth the read!

I’m so glad you did this video. Now if you could eliminate unreliable narrators and add in some flawed but lovable characters you’ve got me!! I tried Alafair Burke’s Find Me and was not into it but I’m willing to give another go. Thanks Audrey. Hope you have a great holiday. I didn’t realize you posted this a year ago. It just popped up!

Thank you so much for that. I've been struggling with creativity and wanting to turn on the camera so I know I've been inconsistent. Hope you are safe and well too! 😘

Please and thank you! This may be too obscure, but for an idea: I'd love more thrillers with themes of "lengths you would go to for your children" like you mentioned for Someone We Know. Or like Defending Jacob, and the movie The Next Three Days.

I know what you mean. Will have to think about book since the only thing instantly popping to mind is The Chain (great premise but ending was a bit off). I'm always in the market for ideas though so going to mull and see what I come up with! Thanks for sharing!

I love this - sometimes I am just not in the mood for super graphic but I love a good twisty thriller!

THANK YOU!!!! I particularly like books with at least one likable character (even better if it’s the main character and told in first person). Out of the ones you recommended, which are like that? I’m sure the Jennifer Weiner book qualifies. BTW, how did I miss this one of hers?

Another fun video! :) Is that your only book shelf that's directly behind you? I'm guessing not because if you are as addicted as I am, I have several book shelves scattered around the house. I really need to get myself better organized as far as my books are concerned. :) I always say I'm rich in books!

The Better Sister sounds super interesting, I love a murder mystery and some family drama! The Wife Between Us is one I have been wanting to pick up for a while now too.

Any good one, is a thriller I need. I’m looking for thrillers with parents/children at the centre particularly, if they’re involved in the crime.

I personally loved Jennifer Weiner, but people should know it's really silly, and I originally didn't love the Wife between us, but now it's one of those books I play over and over if I can't sleep, along with an Anonymous Girl, which I did love from the beginning. I love these kinds of thrillers, thanks Which Alafair Burke book should I start with if I want to follow Olivia's story?

Thank you so much for this vid🙏 from the bottom of my stressed heart. I love thrillers but these days I haven't been feeling in the mood for something violent. I like reading Shalini Boland and Minka Kent's thrillers because they are fast paced and easy reads but so very entertaining. I wish you could make a video about good plot twists like in Gone girl and of course The silent patient🙌 and jaw dropping endings like in Behind her eyes by Sarah Pinborough. Thanks again, love your videos 😘

Hi Hilda! So happy it was helpful and sorry for the delay. Have honestly been a bit up and down with all that's going on and work has been depleting me (but happy to be able to work from home!). Let me give a think to some plot twisty books. I love them too!

Thank you so much for these recommendations, I recently read the good daughter and pretty girls and both especially pretty girls was too graphic for me. I needed to skip a few pages actually. Currently reading bird box loving it and read friend like these(which was your recommendation) and it was so good. Looking forward to more of your videos

I've had Pretty Girls on my shelf and have just been too scared to start it based on what I've heard. Once I got past the first chapter of The Good Daughter I was "okay"....I do think it was a well done book, but it was a lot for sure.

I need to get an Alafair Burke read this year, I am thinking it will be The Better Sister, unless you think I should start with another one. All the books you mentioned sound really good. I seem to be liking a Psychological Thriller better these days, so these really appealed to me. Great topic for a video -- As you know, so enjoy your videos, always a great way to escape from a long day of work! Stay Well Xx

Definitely dive in The Better Sister if that story sounds appealing! The Ex is the first book Olivia was in as a main character, but you don't need to read that one first. The first book I read was Never Tell which was into the Ellie Hatcher series - I loved it and think it was fine to start there. How's that for not at all helpful 😂

Around 1968-69 I was reading Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. I have been wondering if there are any books for adults with a similar vibe. I like it when a mansion or castle plays a significant role in the story. Any seemingly occult / supernatural elements should turn out to have a rational explanation. I am thinking that I am only going to find this is Victorian or Gothic novels. I have mostly read science fiction since 1970. Great mystery stories within science fiction, tend to span centuries, and involve advanced technologies.

I just read Rebecca recently which was nice and creepy. Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware is a good gothic creep-fest (inspired by Turn of the Screw). I also have The Nesting by C.J. Cooke which is supposed to have similar vibes - haven't read it yet but on my list for this month!

I can’t read Shari Lapena. I hated The Couple Next Door for several reasons. I didn’t like her writing style and sometimes that just happens, but I kept with the story. I thought the whole thing was very predictable; however, the very very end did seem to come out of nowhere (in my opinion) and it seriously upset me. I was so angry with her throwing in this mental health/illness thing at the end. I am just so tired of everything being blamed on mental health/illness issues. It’s no wonder the stigma continues. Anyway this is just my opinion, and I know some people really liked it.

The Wife Between Us is the only book by those authors that I haven’t read. I am thinking about using my next audible credit on it. I am not a fan of violence in books. I have the same attitude towards it as you that if it fits into the story it is fine but if it is there for the sake of it it annoys me. I feel the same about sex scenes in a book too. Verity by Colleen Hoover was fantastic but in my opinion was ruined by countless sex scenes which I felt were there just to pad the story out.

I have Verity but haven't read it yet (never read any Colleen Hoover.....). I listened to The Wife Between Us from my library and really enjoyed the audio. Mixed that into the reading but Julia Whelan does the audio narration and she's definitely one of the best 🙌🏻

Chapter and Converse I found that I actually owned the book. I really don’t remember buying it. I have now read it and enjoyed it. I am not sure that I liked it as much as their others but it was still a 4 star book for me.
