"Thrombocytopenia which means low platelets is associated with a variety of
conditions. Thrombocytopenia is defined as a platelet count below the lower limit of
normal (less than 150,000/microL). Platelets are produced in the bone marrow from
megakaryocytes. Each megakoryocyte produces 1000-5000 platelets.
Platelets play a key role in hemostasis forming a temporary plug. Therefore if you
have low platelets you are unable to for a temporary plug and tend to bleed more
easily. In order to understand platelet function, we need to revise hemostasis.
Hemostasis involves three main phases vasoconstriction, platelets plug formation
and coagulation"

@@adelinenmemo It's common to have this happen because rescue treatments like IVIG and platelet transfusions only work temporarily to get the platelet count out of the danger zone. Also the steroids they usually give you at the hospital initially are quickly tapered after you go home. Most of the time the platelets will start to crash back down again within a week or two. This then requires longer term treatment with steroids and slow taper (if you're responsive to them) and/or adding other treatments like Rituxan or Promacta (if you have great insurance). Hope you're recovered or stable by now. I am an ITP patient as well (twice had platelets less than 3 over 15 yrs, but perfect remission in between with platelets over 300, and back in remission now - achieved with 3-4 months of prednisone with slow taper after hospital rescue treatments both times). Good luck!

@PeydaPete
@PeydaPete Жыл бұрын
@@yollyobsequio8379 Overall, I am fine. Though it's a bit complicated in my case. My numbers are really low but I have no symptoms at all. I'm fine in my everyday life, however in some cases (e.g. surgery) I need to get an infusion beforehand and I might need to take some drugs in case of an accident or something. It's more of an annoyance than anything, but then again it depends on what you do for a living or your hobbies. If you think, you have ITP yourself, you should definitely talk to a doctor about it. Depending on your actual values, treatment can vary a lot and it might also only be acute and not chronic.

I appreciate your mentioning that ITP is not just platelet destruction but also reduced production. I think the theory is that the megakaryocytes are destroyed before they can even become platelets. I’m also told its now known as Immune TP not idiopathic.

Great video but it seems to fail to mention elevated platelet counts can result from rare MPN's such as polycythaemia vera or essential thrombocythemia and early stage myelofibrosis. High platelets can also be a result of an auto immune disorder. Anyway thanks for your video it was very informative. Just found one of your other video "Haematopoesis and Myeloproliferative Disorder - Overview" great work.

Anyone know WHY the antibodies might be destroying platelets? I have ITP and my bone marrow came back normal… My guess at this point is that the antibodies are running wild and need to be re-directed somehow.

If you ever had a vaccine, that is the cause. But they will never say that’s what it’s from. Almost all conditions are caused by vaccines, but they won’t teach you that in medical school. Most doctors don’t know this because they weren’t taught this. But this is why.
