How does a throttle body work? What is a throttle body? A throttle body is a butterfly valve located between the air intake filter and the intake manifold. It regulates how much air can go into the engine, based on driver input through the gas pedal. As more air flows into the engine, it injects more fuel, thus allowing for more power. Throttle bodies today are mostly electronically controlled, where this throttle body is mechanical. It includes input for TPS and MAP sensors, as well as routing for the IAC valve, and a idle adjustment screw.

Great video. One suggestion: on smaller, more involved parts like this, use a diagram or a still shot of it and draw on it in post production to show what you're referring to as you speak. It's not that much of an issue because all the air channels and things like that are pretty distinct here, but some on-screen red lines and circles would do a better job of pointing to specific parts than would your fingers.

Here there is an alignment screw that ensures that the butterfly is in an idle position which means the exact 90 degrees with the surface and air passage is fully closed through the throttle variation. It cannot be the same for long duration of time and can be affected from multiple factors like dust and as you told climate. Instead of passing the air with the control of butterfly if we make sub holes on the surface of air flowing chamber and connect all sub holes to a single hole which goes to the combustion chamber and assign a piston at 180 degree instead of 90 degree butterfly it can last for a long time.

Quick question (for anyone knowledgeable) I've had issues with my Tps that I've replaced twice. This second time, being a little more aware, I noticed that when the throttle position moves it does not turn my tps, nor is there any other position to fix the tps that allows it to rotate. Obviously the first idea is that the tps is not the correct one for the vehicle, but this is the exact same type of tps that was on the vehicle before I bought and the last 2 I've purchase over the years none of which actually gets turned. Notes: 1 . I'm buying based off the vehicle make not just repurchasing the same tps based of MN. -- 2. I've tested each tps (by manually turning and watching on a diagnostic tool) and have proven the tps are not faulty -- 3. Ford Codes - P1121, P1120, P0122

Does your battery have the correct voltage and amperes?
@guitarpro594
@guitarpro594 6 жыл бұрын
It sounds like your sensors were installed incorrectly or you are having voltage issues. I would check your battery if you still have the vehicle and go from there If you have purchased multiple of the same part with the same outcome you need to move to another diagnostic (like switching the pigtails attached the the unit, *the electronic connector that plugs in*. My experience tells me you are getting insufficient voltage to your needed parts. Take it to a qualified mechanic with an electrical background or the dealer and have them fix it unless you want your vehicle to catch on fire in your driveway or sell it. Good luck bud!

I had a situation in sub zero weather in Michigan where I pushed on the gas and the pedal didn't spring back, making the engine rev up, and if I put it in neutral, it was really revving! This is on a 2001 Saturn. Did some condensation freeze it open? I checked the cable to make sure it wasn't caught on something, and then I sprayed on a lubricant after cleaning out the Throttle body. This seems to only occur in the winter, and when I clean and spray, it goes away. Your thoughts, and thanks for your videos. very educational!

My '95 Tahoe does this once or twice a winter, especially in the -10 degrees F or lower range. Usually it's just a little WD40 and a light thump with my hand to get it to free up. A 5.7 V8 revved up to 5000 is a little scary, so I know the feeling of dread when the pedal gets stuck!

+outofspace2014 ITB tend to have better engine responses and better air flow. They are tend to not be friendly to every day cars, (cars that are not mostly performance oriented) and to get the most out of them they will have to be tuned with the car's engine. cold air intakes are simple to install and are more car friendly, when you put them on, they just work for the most part.ITBs allow all of the cylinders to have there own source of air. Just like exhaust pulses engines have intake pulses. On a single throttle body setup, since all of the cylinders are not firing at the same time and they share the same source the air is distributed between them, the intake pulses interfere with each other causing some cylinders to get less air than others reducing power. (the loss is very minimal, but if you are racing than that is horsepower you will not have, also the higher the RPM the more this is an issue) The reason why ITBs tend to have a faster engine response is because of two things, the plenum intake runner seen on normal single throttle body setups that brings the air to the intake manifold, and pressure waves. The plenum runner that are on normal setups have to depressurize before the outside air can go in, delaying the air from reaching the cylinders. Pressure waves are created when the butterfly valve or valves close. When air is rushing to get into the engine and the valve closes the air doesn't stop moving instantly. The air smacks the valve and bounces of it in the opposite direction, creating a vacuum in between it and the face of the valve. This vacuum pulls the air back toward the valve with added velocity causing it to enter the valve when it open at a faster rate than without the pressure wave. This only occurs when it hits the valve, so the valve will have to be mostly closed for these pressure waves to occur.This only works when an intake valves opens as the pressure waves reverts (pulls back the air). meaning that this only works at certain RPMs. With extensive tuning you can increase the amount of times it happens.The bad thing about them is that they do not play well with stock ECUs and measurements in stock cars. Without a plenum or filters they are exposed and can allow debris and unwanted materials to enter your engine. You can add a plenum but the associated benefit of not having one is hurt for the most part. You can supercharge with ITBs with the plenum on.With CAIs the benefit is that they tend to be farther away from the engine and closer to the outside air, so they get a colder charger of air. Compared to the ITB they are more friendly to cars and do not rely much on tuning.ITBs are for people who are looking to draw out every horse they can, like racing. Formula One and Dragsters use ITBs. CAI are for simpler builds and for people who want to add power to a car that can be a daily driver.

I'm not sure you should look at the intake and throttle body yet. Look into getting a new better flowing exhaust header and cat before you go to the intake. Most restrictions are usually in the exhaust. No point in doing a intake if the exhaust slows down the escaping gases. Even if you do a intake their probably is no point in doing the throttle body. From what I can find your 1.6L or 1.8L has a 60-62mm throttle body to put that in prospective a 4.0L jeep cherokee revs to 5000rpm and has a 60mm throttle body. I highly doubt you'll need more air than that for any normal mods. If you do a bigger throttle body you'll notice a difference for the amount of gas pedal travel but that is just because you have more airflow not because of a power increase. for example 10% throttle now might be 1500rpm but with a bigger throttle body 10% throttle = 1800rpm.

Do your research and you would know. Spacers are all about adding Volumetric efficiency, (more air traveling through your plenum). This increases MPG, HP in higher RMP range, and keeps the engine cooler providing more cool air for better, more consistent performance output. It's really simple and the information is more than abundant, friend.

Hello Jason do you think it could be possible to install individual throttle bodies in a 2019 mx5 rf? I just bought mine and I'd like to have that amazing induction sound.

Could you also do a video on whether or not throttle body spacers work and if they're worth the money?

Hey do you think you could explain the vq37vhr engine on a video soon? I've tried to understand how the whole camless vvel system works but I just always find mixed info on that topic. If you can I would appreciate it. Great videos. Very informative and never a waste of my time unlike much of KZbin out there. Keep it up.

From what I can find it's not really camless it just works slightly different. It uses rocker arms to hit the valve tappets instead and the way it changes lift and duration is by changes the pivot point in the top control camshaft.

Should the throttle plate seal 100% of the throttle body or is it normal to have a very thin line of air? I have an old lancer glxi 93 and my rpm is a little bit high. Hoping to get an answer from you good sir. Have a nice day.

Hello Sir, thank you for your effort explaining about throttle body. I have questions for you. I have a 2017 Mazda CX9 Signature, and it already has 30k plus miles. I would like to perform DIY maintenance such as cleaning the throttle body. Is it advisable to remove the throttle body and clean it? If it is, what type of cleaner should I use and which part of the throttle body shouldn’t I spray? Besides the throttle body, are there other parts need to be cleaned? After installing it, do I need to use a service maintenance device ( Sorry, I don’t really know the correct term for the device) in order to reset and relearn functions? Thank you!
