I'm 51 & dying, and riding my motorcycle stresses the heck out of me. Still, I'll ride as long as I can. I guess everything you stated all depends on one's underlying health conditions. I just ride to push myself to live another day. Of course, "End Stage Liver Disease" is no laughing matter and nether is waiting for a Liver Transplant from MGH in Boston, MA. I've been riding since I was 16 years old on the road. Of course, I could get a Liver Transplant, but there is only 30 to 40% chance of that happening. I think the worst thing finding out that I have Cirrhosis of The Liver, Ascites, and an enlarged Spleen is that I was planning on starting up a business and making loads. So much for that happening. The crazy thing is that I my Cirrhosis of The Liver wasn't caused by Alcohol.

There is an old expression that says, "You'll never see a motorcycle parked in front of a psychiatrist's office unless it is the doctor's bike." I've ridden for a bit over 50 years and I gave up riding four times but when riding gets into your blood, there is no getting it out. Enjoy the ride!

An unmentioned factor that I think plays a big role here is the fact that we spend our days sitting in one small box to the next. As opposed to a car, riding a motorcycle allows us to feel more present and connected to the world.

Before I retired, I rode my Harley to work everyday, unless it was raining when it was time to go. Even if there was a possibility of rain during the day I still rode, because I only needed two dry times, going to work and going home! Since I rode to work I had the opportunity to get my mind ready for work and of course riding home I had the opportunity to leave all the stress behind! I used to tell people I never had a bad day at work because I always had a great ride home!

As a survivor of a traumatic brain injury thanks to a drunk driver running me over at 35mph and severe PTSD along with 8% loss of brain function from that TBI, my PTSD counselor recommended getting back onto 2 wheels as a way to "rewire" my brain and combat the severe depression I was suffering from my brain injury/ PTSD and subsequent divorce from my wife of 20 years now that I was damaged and no longer "met her professional & personal goals ". It took me a while to save up and research what type of bike I wanted but I finally found myself exploring my state on an Africa Twin. It was stressful as I had not ridden since 2011 but it was exhilarating to be on two wheels again and seeing country I had not seen in years. It was a great challenge to go for a "scoot" and make it back home in 1 piece and not be someone's hood ornament. I was working parts of my brain that I had not used for a long time and forcing neurons to go to new places inside my damaged neural net. To make it home after a long day at work and jump on my scooter and go for a ride decreases my stress and makes my brain buzz. I come back feeling happier with a much better outlook on life. This is especially important when my kids are with the "evil ex" and I'm feeling very alone. My 2 wheel therapy combats my depression and forced my brain to new places as I have to balance, focus, plan, shift, watch out for hazards, enjoy the sights, smell, listen, feel in a whole new way and retrain my brain. I'm still an introvert and ride alone just so I dont have to worry about another. But my 2 wheel time is a godsend to me when I can ride. Thanks to all of you 2 wheel Angel's I've been watching for the last year that helped me get back on the road and go places I didn't think I could go by myself.

When I want to empty my Brain, I get on my bike. My bike is an extension of my brain and body. It's a therapy tool. When I am riding my bike, I am FULLY occupied and all parts of my body are used to control the machine. No other mode of transportation puts you in the Zone of being powerful and vulnerable at the same time. When I am on my bike I am FOCUSED on my surroundings and the bike itself. I feel and control it's heartbeat. On a bike you need to be Proactive and not Reactive. Riding connects me directly to the world around me. Riding is Primal and Visceral while being fun and relaxing at the same time. Not so much in the car bubble. Throttle Therapy is Brain Therapy! AWESOME video Meghan! 🤘👍✊

I’m a disabled vet. and I can’t explain how much going for a ride helped me. Even in my car, a used corvette c6. I had to sell the car when I was medically retired(I should have kept it..) I had the bike still and would ride often to help going through all the crap as I left and became a civilian. We had to move when my pay was messed up and we had to sell our house to keep from being foreclosed on. I didn’t have the area to ride or the best weather, for me personally. I can say without a doubt the car made me feel like wasn’t ”disabled”. The way the seat held me and the feel of going around a corner with speed you wouldn’t normally be able to do in a standard car. The bike had its own way of making me feel better about myself. Both got me out of the house and interacting with other people that had the same passion. When I first heard the new Corvette was going to be mid engine with a very affordable MSRP, I thought i was going to be able to pick up a used one after about 5 years or so… then Covid hit. The price doubled. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to own one. For me, it felt like the only way I would ever be able to own a mid engine super car like a Ferrari or Lamborghini, would be this car. Now even it was out of reach forever. I could really use my car right now… I don’t have an outlet that can provide that feeling. My self isolation has even gotten worse. A bike or a car can make such a difference.

A couple of old sayings (now turned into memes) sprung to mind while watching this vid. "When you drive through the desert in a car, you're in a car but when you ride through the desert on a motorcycle, you're in the desert". And... "When you drive a car it's like watching a movie but when you ride a motorcycle you're IN the movie". Both seem glib & mildly funny on the surface but both capture why motorcycling feeds the mind & soul & support the science you have provided on why we love riding & why it is the sweetest addiction. Very interesting & entertaining video. I'm now a subscriber looking forward to more of your content!

I never thought about how much of that was from the form factor vs the sheer fun of riding something I put together myself that I am not supposed to be riding. I never thought about the science involved in the stance. I can do so much on my bike that I can't do in a car, the feeling is freeing and fun.

Well fancy seeing your face here! 😁 While I absolutely love the aspect of riding something one built with one's own hands, I feel that there's even more to be had from your typical crotch rocket. In addition to the dopamine throughout (which I'm sure you've noticed already), there's also adrenaline on tap (use wisely!) and perhaps the satisfaction of having tamed a wild beast which may well try to kill you if mishandled. Less practical for inner city transport, but definitely still worth a try around some nice back roads if you haven't already.

I don’t have a bike. But I know it’s different in my heart that’s it’s different. Love my truck, but can’t go very far for a quick drive and not drag the gas station with me. So my thoughts are why not put it in the bed and go some where out of the city. Or take your bike out of the city for a couple hours. I live near Chicago. Roads suck for my truck, I’m sure they would for a bike. I’m not there yet Im just weighting bikes out.

Last night, I came home late, few people on the roads, the city lights looked so pretty, the engine just purring, warm summer evening glides past your skin. You park the bike, get inside. Less about pose, far more about having to focus in the moment IN FULL in order to survive the challenge of motorcycle riding…. When you DO survive, it is a challenge met. Which is a product of many sub-challenges met. Freedom-feeling elements, combined with adrenaline from the feeling of the power and control of the machine, etc… these are all the primary factors, not to be minimized by irrelevant case studies.

Its funny, how dangerous some perceive riding is. They think its a death wish mainly because they've never done it. For me, Ive ridden since I was very young. Street/dirt/racing/long trips on bikes, any kind of riding. I may feel some slight anxiety before I get on a bike for long ride, the minute I'm on the bike I am good to go. Did 7300 miles to Alaska and back, over 500 miles a day, it was very memorable. If you consistently put your self in the wrong spot on a bike, you will get wacked sooner or later. The rider HAS to think ahead, blaming a car for hitting you wont make it all better, have to predict what can happen way ahead of time.

I ride every day. It's what I do for a living and I also ride my bikes as my daily commuters. I have a truck but rarely drive it and only when I need to haul something too big for my bike. I ride my bike regardless of weather and season, and ride in snow as well as tar melting heat. I've spent most of my years riding sport bikes and have gradually started to spend more time on larger cruisers (my wife's idea), though I still like to drag a knee once in awhile. I've been doing this for many decades and since I ride professionally, you might say I have a bit of experience on the track as well as in traffic conditions. As you mentioned, riding can be very therapeutic, mind clearing, relaxing and let's you get more in touch with the road, weather and environment. You get more of the sounds, smells and sensations of the road as you twist and turn, or rip it down a long straight. I love it and wouldn't do this if I didn't. Unfortunately, the biggest change to my riding experiences I've noticed, especially in the last few years, is the huge and growing presence of distracted and negligent drivers due to mobile devices. I can safely say that when I get forced out of my lane or someone pulls out in front of me, that driver will have a phone in their hand. Almost every damn time. You say that riding can offer a physical benefit as well as a mental one, and I agree, but I can honestly say that the part of my body that gets the greatest amount of exercise is the middle finger of my left hand. Be safe and keep two rubbers down!

Dirt bikes are awesome for that reason. Breaking traction is not only easier, it's the norm, and coming off it in the dirt has basically zero consequences (other than you're now even muddier), so you get to learn how to control this in a relatively safe environment. Then if it happens on the road you're much better equipped to handle it.

Awesome! I love it!! I've always said that riding my motorcycle is my "70 MPH massage" haha. I bought a new bike when I got a new job at a company known for it's stress and the demands they place on their employees. I'd worked in stressful jobs before but this one was off the charts and my new bike REALLY helped me deal with all the complex issues I was confronted with on a daily basis. It was a professional company but I'd love to ride my bike to work, with all my gear on and just walk in a get ready to work. People looked at me kinda funny but I didn't care. We had a big campus so if a meeting was at a far away building, I'd ride my bike over and carrying my helmet in with my briefcase always got strange looks which I loved. Sadly my bikes aren't running anymore BUT I just bought a brand new motorcycle jack, so I can jack them up and work on the wheels and brakes and I've got some new tools to help me work on them. Hopefully by Spring 2024, I'll be back on the roads....but I got a lot of work to do between now and then.

Great video! Solo rides (and parking lot practice time) are my go-to inland therapy sessions. Another is scuba diving. Both activities allow me a chill, focused, solitary time and space in beautiful surroundings. Thank you for clarifying the science behind why it feels so good.

Your mention on posture was right on the money. My 1st time doing magic mushrooms, I was experimenting with moving my body in different positions, and taking note on the changes it produced in the mind as well as the body. Amy Cudy's book cover showing the figure with arms open and raised was literally the exact same posture I took note of during that trip. It was hilarious trying to explain this to my friends in the moment, just seeing a circle of people sitting down and raising their arms, searching for something that was up in the air apparently, haha. This is one of the many reasons I choose to ride 365 days a year. Good video. *Edit: I just looked at your page and the last video you made has mushrooms in the thumbnail!🍻

Thats great. Thank you. Thats exactly my experience (57 years old): when motorcycling in the right „window“, it is therapy. But to long or fast or weather conditions (for me: to hot) or unknown territorries, sometimes it will become disstress. Have an attention. Buy 🖖

This was wonderfully made. I like the idea of the open power posture contributing to wellness of the mind. The state of hyper-focus but spatially aware of all things at the same time also has some contribution to this, I think. I often tell people that motorcycling is meditation on metal and yoga on saddles, with a little danger mixed in to keep it honest.

For me any activity that requires total focus puts me into a meditative state. I love motorcyling, mountain biking, snowboarding, and skateboarding because they all make me immediately forget about all my worries and troubles and just focus entirely on the moment and whats in front of me. I can have similar experiences being out in nature but because just sitting by a creek I dont have to focus on not crashing its easier for my my mind to wander and start to stress about life BS. It's hard to know what to do with my downtime honestly, if i could truly live the eat, sleep, ride lifestyle I would but there's always silly responsibilities getting in the way lol.

Well said. I've long thought that riding is so soothing because the sensory load prevents you from worrying and builds up some testosterone. I have a 25-minute commute and I feel totally awake and present by the time I get to work.

My first bike was a Honda CB 550, Ducati 350 Sebring, BMW R65 and the list goes on. I stopped riding when the street sweepers didn't do their jobs and drivers became ever more distracted. Selling the Buell Cyclone and Honda XR650R I Super Motoed helped finance my new home with a shop/cave that would drop jaws. It even features a subterranean hang-out (aka grease pit). My wife prodded me to go to the bike shop twice and I resisted. The third time she said "You should check it out" I did... and bought a Royal Enfield Interceptor. It has been a great project but it doesn't have a very good fast-forward button so I Got a Yamaha FZ-7 to add to the stable (Scuderia Cavalieri). Sure, it's not the fastest bike out there but I have come to realize it's about the SMILES per hour rather than the MILES per hour.

I got into motorcycling last year. It's my reward for quitting drinking. (now 2 years) Quitting drinking allowed me to focus on my mental and physical health in a sustainable way, including: - Getting diagnosed and treated for ADHD - Actually sticking to workouts and diets - Motorcycling instead of self medicating for stress relief - More present and fulfilling relationship with my wife and kids It's like a snowball effect. Motorcycling didn't solve anything, but it's great tool in my toolbox of mental health. Unfortunately, weather has been terrible the past few weeks, switching between rain and sun every 30 minutes, and I'm itching to go out again, but not comfortable riding in the wet. Thanks for an interesting video, would have loved to see a more in depth video about it. And nice bike!

I used to dispatch ride as a courier in London and around the UK sometimes long journeys sometimes lots of small stuff in the City, at the end of my day i was always feel mentally knackered ut so so so relaxed .... i never went to bed wired or head jumbled and always woke up with a proper spring in my step. i still ride but more for leisure, my wife goes pillion and she alwasy says no matter how stressed her day has been a ride on the bike alays clears her head and helps her chill out so much. ..... for me its a sort of dynamic flying sensation i get from the bike that lets me feel free

To me it's about living in the present. When on a bike you are constantly surveying the terrain, the other drivers, the input to the bike, and a hundred other things that require an attention level not required in a vehicle. On a bike you are 100% present at nearly all times and while to some that may seems exhausting it is actually one of the more freeing experiences around

Against all that, riding worsens my PTSD related anxiety, to the point where I'm about to give up for good. 7 years since life changing injuries, but above 45 mph on two wheels and my unconscious mind won't play ball. Driving a car is bad too, but not quite as bad as the bike. Simulators helped desensitise a bit, but not enough to make riding the pleasure it was.

Riding motorcycle forces you to live 100% in the moment (and it's always a great moment when you're on a bike). It also gives you a sense of agency - you are directly controlling what happens. Lastly, it's a 4 sense experience (5 if you get a bug in your mouth).

Yep. My job is nonemergency medical transportation, I'm usually on the road 5 days a week, 10 hours a day, 200+ miles in a minivan. It's mentally exhausting maintaining focus and awareness for that long in traffic. At the end of the day, I come home, sit on the couch for a while and stare at the tv just to let my brain unclench. That is not fun nor relaxing. But, I can get on my bike, ride for 100 miles to get to the farm produce stand, ride it back, wipe the bugs off the helmet visor and feel refreshed. I would say that the primary beneficial effect is due to the feeling of freedom and letting go while riding of those things in life that we feel are heavy responsibilities.

You keep talking about a power pose, Racing bikes where you're totally hunched over? A chopper with feet forward? I think you're talking specifically about upright position. It may be part of the influence it has on the neurological balance in the brain but many more studies point to the fact that the brain is in a highly concentrated state and the amount of visual, aural and sensory inputs. These all add to an increase in dopamine in the brain while riding.
