I just had a thought today that I'd not seen anything come up from you recently, and went on to look to see if I had missed any vids of yours, only to find that you'd not posted anything for a month. I hope to god that isn't because you have further health issues? Anyway I watched this again and am still impressed with the design, the build and the finish. That wobble on the top is insignificant anyway. How much gap is there between the spindle and drawbar? Is there enough room to put a nylon or aluminium sleeve about 6" down inside to straighten things up? Just a thought mate. Cheers from not so great England. Sam

Another really interesting one. Thanks Matty, you do some great work. I’m planning to one day add one of those air operated Maxi Torque draw bar systems, so I’m imagining that the top section on yours with the air / coolant feed tube would interfere with it unfortunately, because what you have done is a really good idea. Maybe the designer who made the plans for you could perhaps design something compatible perhaps? 🤷♂️ My butt was puckered watching you drill that long hole. I once had to drill a hole 4 feet long up through the centre of a wooden standard lamp for the power chord & light bayonet fitting etc, on a wood lathe. I bought a through turning tail stock and a machinist mate turned and silver soldered a twist drill onto a 4 foot + 3/8ths rod, with T handle. I started “pecking away at it” - pulling it out and clearing the chips, every few mm, & it took forever to do. Sadly tho the drill followed the grain inside the wood and wandered off centre & broke out the side about 4 inches before reaching the top, completely destroying the whole piece, that I was copying from an antique made in the late 1880’s. Talk about soul destroying. You drilling this long hole brought back some bad memories for me from at least 35 years ago. I never got tempted to make another one after that. It also made me wonder how the heck they did it back in the 1880’s? 🤷♂️ Watching you with that long drill then had me wondering how rifle barrels are drilled? 🤷♂️ This one made my brain ache, but it really was enjoyable to watch so thank you sincerely. 👍👍👍🇦🇺

I’ve considered similar myself, and the arrival of your video left me giddy. A couple of concerns, that have left me hesitant is the probability of leakage from the drawbar / collet interface, and leakage from the collet itself, into the quill, to contaminate bearings, wash out lubrication, and eventual corrosion from water based coolants / and moisture laden shop air. While I expect there are through coolant specific tool holding solutions, my home shop situation doesn’t lend itself to buying additional specific purpose tool holding, even if I was to pursuit second hand through coolant tooling. Guess I’m curious, if / how, you’ve addressed this issue. As always, thanks for sharing another brilliant project via your videos.

Gday, The air/coolant goes done the drawbar, the drawbar is screwed into the arbor so nothing can go into the spindle.

Great build Matty. I would think that if you get any leaks when you use coolant, you might want to flip those seals the other way around so that the lips are pushed onto the shaft by the (relatively low) pressure of the coolant.

Superb build Matty. One thought ; when you come to rig up the distribution block have you considered making an annular groove in the space between the bearings/seals on the draw bar to allow a constant supply of coolant otherwise you would be creating an intermittent flow to you cutter having only one hole in the drawbar; or have I missed something in the build?

G'day Matty, that's a great build mate, a complete win in my eyes. I have a brand new unused coolant pump and tank and if you were in the UK I'd donate that to you for your mill. I'd hate to wonder what the shipping cost would be from the UK to Oz, probably three or four times the cost of the pump and tank as it's a quite heavy unit for its size!
