Not sure how even one person could dislike this Sensei? I study Wado Kai Karate and absolutely appreciate the teaching and instruction given here. Wonderful insight into the movement, power and softness needed to perform any style of Karate to the highest level. My own instructors teach these very same principles and they are the hardest part of any technique to learn. Will just have to continue learning, practising and relaxing:)

Rick Hotton Sensei, a marvellous teacher, i teach myself in schools as part of philosophy and combat training, he understands the kinetic flow of energy in the body and is erudite enough to translate it into traditional Karate ..magnificent.

Nice (and a refreshing change) to listen to someone who really knows about the martial arts and tries to impart that knowledge openly to others. A quick comment about the idea of an instructor training others to be better than themselves - I think it more important for an instructor to help students to be the best they can be. In doing so some will be better but others will not. In either case it doesn't matter as long as each student is helped to achieve their own full potential, whatever that is

I have said this before and I will say it again, this man, this Sensei is a true master. his knowledge of biomechanics and energy transfer is so much deeper than the average master out there. pay attention people because this is what a true master looks like. I wish I could go to his Dojo and learn from him. Simply outstanding.

As an Aikido practitioner I see a lot of IP work going on here. I've had the privilege to train Shotokan, which is an awesome martial art, and I found the moving around centre and maintaining softness creates more power than an external power that you sometimes find in karate.

Great comment. That's what I want from a karate teacher. Sure we need the other forms of training such as rote for self discovery and private training for self assessment. But at times we need guys like him to make you think about it on another level. I think he's brilliant & I hope the WTKO use him as often as possible. They're a perfect fit!

It must be a real bad feeling when you’re a ranking black belt and you realize you don’t know anything.Thats the feeling I get every time I see Rick Hutton perform his moves.
@DavidLee-no9uc9 жыл бұрын
He must be recovering the Basics, as Black Belts I expect these people should already know what this Sensei is teaching. He looked good though, and was Correct in all that he taught! Great seminar on Basics. 3:)
@novoscotia8 жыл бұрын
+David Lee. Hi David. I prefer the word 'foundation' to 'basics'. Basics implies it is something to learn then move on from and not return to. Foundation implies it is something to learn because it influences everything you learn afterwards and therefore is something of great importance which needs continuous practise and development
@DavidLee-no9uc8 жыл бұрын
I cant argue with that! true words.
@kbanghart5 жыл бұрын
I believe that is the problem, if you expect these people to already know these basics, but they don't, or maybe just need refreshing, perhaps that is what's wrong with a lot of karate these days.

I practice judo, but can see a direct application of these concepts of connecting through the corridor, whipping energy, and relaxed heaviness to the throwing mechanics of kuzushi and tai sabaki. More importantly, this is lifetime's worth of concepts with which I can change my training from being sports-oriented to the type that I can continue practicing for the remainder of my life. The video fits a lot of information into just a bit over 9 minutes, and ends perfectly, by putting all of this in perspective. Thank you for sharing all of these lessons.

Ous Hotton sensei, Im Sensei Kashar Selema, Of USA Goju Organization. Im a fan, an follower of your martial philosophy. Its amazing how you have mastered the principle of hard and soft, that Goju Master dont understand. Kung fu was my first Art and love, which i started training in 1979. after moving from New Jersey to Florida in 1994. There was one Kung fu school Choy li fut, which i couldn't afford. Hanshi Larry Mabson then Sensei Mabson was teaching at Sunland park, in Ft Lauderdale. He had and open door policy i started training with him, Goju is the way of hard and soft, but i have not learned it the way you have internalize it, and have " become it" I have notice all Goju Masters are harder than they are soft, and haven't understood the way of Goju the way you understand it and internalized and embody the concept. I understand what it is that you so honestly and sincerely try to convey and relay to students. I strive to your level of understanding in this expertise that you have mastered. Much respect
@Hans_Hamon5 жыл бұрын
Sensei Hotton, you truly understand connection, coupled with the Spirit, or, our Will and intentions. Clearly, you have a very deep understanding of how all things are interconnected, and you also are adept at communicating your ideas and concepts. I should express my gratitude for your insights and wisdom; I continue to watch and learn from you, from afar, and I wish you and your Students the very best. Arigato, Sensei Hotton. Very Respectfully, Mr. Shepherd, U.S. Army (Ret.) OEF-OIF Combat Veteran, 'A' CO, 3-15 INF, 2nd BCT, 3rd Infantry Division, "Never panic; once you do, you have lost." "Train precisely the way that you intend to fight." "The more you bleed in training, the less you will bleed, in battle." "If you know yourself and you know your enemy, you need not fear the result of a thousand battles." From the lands of Minnesota, be well and be whole, and be whole, to be well.

I could watch Sensei Rick move all day. When it comes to speed, power and clarity of movement, many karateka achieve one at the detriment of the other two. Sensei Rick achieves all 3 in perfect harmony in every movement. The short Tekki Shodan clip is a good demonstration of this. Thank you for sharing such wonderful insight into what every karateka should strive for.

This is a world away from when I did shotokan karate in the mid seventies. I was just a kid around eleven and we had a complete psycho for a sensei. He was sadistic and brutal and would never be allowed to teach today. Strangely I never told my mum what a loony this guy was, I just assumed this was karate. It’s hard and it hurts. Watching these videos makes me think after all these years of taking it back up again. I can still even remember many of the katas.
@doraimoonobi5 жыл бұрын
I love that movements🤙❤
@keystothebox2 жыл бұрын
he is great at technique, but all his movements are far to fast for teaching the movement. he always shows the proper movement at too high of a speed. It is ok to show it at high speed after you show it at low speed, but he shows the wrong way at slow speed and the correct way at only high speed which makes it very hard to follow. Hopefully someone tells him so he can correct this and improve his teaching style.

Interesting. Not too sure I could be that “relaxed” with my internal power in a real fight. Took me a few years of systema to learn to simply breathe properly whilst being repeatedly struck - after 15 years of shotokan training! Still interesting stuff.
@annoyed7075 жыл бұрын
Perhaps not quite that relaxed but more relaxed that most people who suddenly find that their moves don't work in a real fight because they tense up and freeze.

I really wanted to see some thoses technics being using to stop a more realistic attack. Oi/jun-zuki is so hard to a normal person to do and any agressor won't do that kind of punch on you. If karate is really for self-defense, show technics that works agains a haymaker punch for example.
@CephlonMayngrum5 жыл бұрын
his technique is great and practicle. it'll certainly work in a real senario. timing and distance from opponent is the only thing stopping it from working. that all depends on who uses it.
