I went over to this video after watching the cut on Strong Heart where IU was talking about how during one of her Good Day stages, only one of her fans got into the venue and sang the cheers all by herself and IU promised that she'd become a singer that'd work to encourage her fans after that. i want to share this story just to register how much this song and iu in general means to me. so, for the longest time, the only korean artist i kept up with was shinee. i heard of iu beforehand of course, she's super big even in my country and jonghyun literally referred to her as one of his best friends, but i never really listened to her songs before. i'm shinee fan since 2015 and always thought i wouldn't fall for any other kpop artist because i was too lazy to get into them but then i watched iu's palette episode and she was just SO sweet. her voice, her kindness, her gentleness. when i heard dear name i was like wow, let me check that out! this year was one of the hardest ever. i lost my grandfather, i lost friends, i'm depressed and sick and inside my house most of the time because of the pandemic. i had so many anxiety attacks over nothing. and it's crazy to say this, because while i love music and do believe in the power of art, i always tried to avoid parasocial relationships with celebrities and being too dependent on random stuff to be okay and healthy but this song truly, truly saved my life. i had an anxiety attack so bad the other day i thought i would die. i couldn't breathe properly, i was alone and my chest was hurting. i laid on the ground trying to do breathing exercises. i got my phone to try to find meditation videos but this song started playing instead since i was playing it the night before. i laid there breathing and listening even though i couldn't understand a word. i listened to it 3 times and managed to breathe. when my mom got home i was sleeping on the floor with my headphones on. i listen to it often, as well as her other songs, and while i didn't have an episode as bad as that one since, it always comforts me. and that's how i became an uaena, too. thank you iu for indirectly saving my life! i own you a lot.

this reminds me of a particular episode from natsume yuujinchou where a guy could also see spirits and youkai. This song is not for Jang Kiha or someone. IU wrote this song for everyone who has problem with sleep (Insomnia) as herself suffers from Insomnia. She wish everyone who had insomnia had a good sleep while listening to this song. "You" in this song is basically "everyone who she wish to have a good sleep". "Sending fireflies to your window" is the way IU wishing everyone to have a good sleep. Firelflies in this song is actually uaena (her fandom name) as the colour of firelfies is neon-yellow, the same colour as her official fandom colour. She said this during her gwangju concert. "I'm someone who has trouble sleeping. Sometimes I can sleep well, but sometimes I really can't fall asleep. So quite a number of my own compositions are about that kind of sleep, right?
