If you want to control the ball in tennis while still hit it with power, you'll need to work with throwing and pushing ratios rather then think about tennis stroke technique.
The throwing part gives you lots of power while the pushing part helps you control the ball.
The ratio between throwing and pushing constantly changes as we adjust to different balls.
The reason why most tennis players push too much is because they want too much control.
Only when you are mentally able to let go more, you can also throw more.
The long term goal is to move towards letting go and throwing more when it comes to your tennis strokes.

Very helpful. The Throw is a loose grip and the Push is as you squeeze the handle a little harder on a laid back wrist to control. The looser the grip the more throw...

Great one! I often switch back and forth between clay and hard court, and on clay I usually keep the arm more relaxed, be more aggressive with the legs (step in first, then use arms) and generally accelerate more aggressively. On hard court it's much more "arms first, legs follow" aka pushing, and I also focus more on feel and keeping the ball on the strings longer as opposed to accelerating fast. One thought that works well for me on both surfaces is "hit the ball at the highest point", it leads to proper spacing and avoids getting jammed up, falling back, rising up etc.

Thank you. Excellent way of articulating two very critical components of every stroke. When I look carefully at my own way of hitting I do sense the need to try to control the outcome and in doing so sacrifice power as well as accuracy. The direction you offer in implementing the teaching is very helpful Appreciate the time you guys put in for all of us!

Hi Tomaz. Yeah,thats a nice tip.Will try that today.Love the time concept vid too and using more of it during the stroke. I use the "Bounce-Hit" to bring my timing back in matchplay.When things get a little tense and the worry about where to put the return, it helps you slow down again and wait for the right contact point.Thanx again.

It seems that Throw vs Push is related to Think fast vs Think hard. In that video, Thomaz talked about mentality on sitters. I would say, easier the ball, the more throw and harder the ball (pace, depth,spin), the more push.

Just to make a comment, i could be wrong but..... it seems that from the vids the throw and push are closely related to how much wrist action used through the contact of the ball. Giving you the extremity of how long the ball spends on the racquets string.

Thanks for this, Tomaz. I'm looking forward to focusing on this the next time I play. Question: during a swing is the transition always from a throw to a push, or can you do it the other way around, starting with a push feel and then transitioning to a throw feel? I was thinking that maybe you could transition from a push to the throw if you were playing a heavy hitting player, where you are first just trying to line up the racquet with the incoming ball, then one you feel it's lined up, then transition more to a letting-go throw feel. And maybe this is also true with a volley? Not sure. Thanks.
@feeltennis
@feeltennis 7 жыл бұрын
No, you cannot transition from a push to throw, you have no speed. Try it for yourself. With a heavy hitter you just throw less. Same with the volley, but it's mostly a push and sometimes a punch.

Feel Tennis Instruction , thank you for the lesson, but does it conflict with the video you talked about release the racket before contact? For Federer video, it is obvious that he swing differently from the start if he is pushing or hit with full speed as his had relaxing from the beginning and his wrist lagging then swing forward.
@feeltennis
@feeltennis 9 жыл бұрын
Hung Phan Federer can "throw" the racquet much more into the ball than any of us mortals and still control it. If he has to, he pushes too as you've seen in the video above when he is returning. The mistake you're making is that you're seeing my tips as the one and only final answer on how to hit a ball. There is no such thing. I am sharing concepts, ideas, feels that help you find the most power and control with least amount of effort. Most ideas are EXAGGERATIONS so that you understand them and feel them. Once you do, you can apply a certain LEVEL of each concept. Releasing the racquet is an exaggeration, like a 100% throw here. It's the exact same thing, except now I am telling how to add control to that - by adding an element of pushing...

@feeltennis
@feeltennis 7 жыл бұрын
Throwing and pushing are the most natural movements and feels you do all your life, it's not related to tennis. That's why I bring them up so you can relate. Surely you could really actually throw a racket? So that's the feel you're looking for, except you don't release the racket. Surely you've pushed something out of your way in your life and our pushed a table or a chair or a sofa. So that's the feel you want to apply when hitting a ball. These analogies are the closest we can get to help you understand what I feel when I hit the ball.

You were talking about more POWER but you didn't show in this video almost any amount of power on your forehand. Why did you hit the ball (on forehand especially) without any power? If you are talking about more power why don't to show real power so that "online students" could see the example of powerful forehand? And my statement is true not only for this particular video, you really too concentrated on the feel without any power (which is very important in modern tennis).
@feeltennis
@feeltennis 9 жыл бұрын
Alexey Salo Good point, Alexey, I will PROVE it to you next time visually. But surely you can sense how easily I hit balls and how fast they fly off my racquet. Let me add that EVERY SINGLE adult male tennis player that I worked with in the last 20 years, is trying to hit the ball harder than they are capable of controlling. They make mistakes simple because they try to hit harder than their current skill level allows them. So I really don't want to encourage anyone to hit with power, I am basically slowing down everyone. What I am showing you in the video is how to find power MORE EFFICIENTLY and not really the MAXIMUM POWER you can get. That's up to you, I only showed you the way...

Fantastic! Two months ago the contents of this video were not clear to my mind... Watching your videos and playing and playing again everything has a sense! In my opinion, this video is also related with one of your last lessons named "Control vs. power", where you talk about the loose wrist... Watching your videos I've understood this concept, about the throw (=power) or push (=control) feel: 1) loose wrist just until before the impact with the ball (=throw feel): the loose wrist assumes the "L" position (buttcap of the racquet pointing to the net) 2) a split second before the hit, the wrist must stay firm to have control on the racquet and ball's trajectory (=push feel); 3) after hitting the ball, the wrist get loose again in the followthrough. Great master Tomaz!

1. Excellent break down 2. I don't use the word "push" i use "press" The reason is when most people think "push" they want to pitty pat the ball. But press they hold and "drive" 3. I agree 100% on why we press/push and why to throw. I tell my students when trying to figure out how much throw vs press, more time = more throw, less time = more press. in general but of course some people have great technique and can use more throw. 4. I use the throwing the racket demonstration all the time so they can get a true feel. Use spare rackets of course. Great video!!!1

I have really enjoyed reflecting on this video, you really have a great way to explain things. Keep up the great work by delivering more inspiring videos. I think for me a helpful phrase is "Let the racket head do the work" this seems to relate a lot to throwing as I want to allow effortless acceleration in the swing up to and through the ball, but also with a "feel "for what is happening during the stroke. A good place to get to is to have a lack of tension (mentally and physically) while playing all shots.

Second time seeing this. Thanks X 1,000,000. I didn’t have this in mind yesterday until hitting the last fifty balls from my machine. Throwing produced easy forehand power, and paradoxically, more control, I’m guessing because the looser grip that goes with it persisted through the pushing part of the stroke.

The thing i would add to this is that you can throw 100%, but it can be a very slow throw. Throwing does not have to be fast, throwing can be slow. A throw is a biomechanical movement, and does not have anything to do with speed.

In order to hit with power i need to throw the racket. I can push with power but it would go out, and also wouldn't be as powerful or accurate as a throw. So i need to aim to throw very fast if i want power. So the 'let go' component should include the element of speed as well as the throw. How fast can i throw the racket and the ball goes to the place i want it to go.
@feeltennis
@feeltennis 3 ай бұрын
Yes, all good points, the key is EFFORTLESS power through throwing. You can hit with power without throwing, 90% of rec players do that and they can generate power - but not effortless. And yes, you can throw slowly and hit an easy ball effortlessly - that's what we tennis pros all do. We can rally with our students at very low speeds very easily...

My game has progressed bit by bit, but two of your concepts, specifically, helped me a great deal this morning. Throw/push, and hit with purpose. Throw/push was the concept I needed on both groundstrokes, and hit with purpose? Oh man was it great. My balls were deeper, placed well but not too much of anything. And I wasn't working very hard(other than all the running) I know I've seen these concepts from you before, but I guess at this moment I'm ready to absorb it. Thanks for all the work that goes into making these things.

Hi tomaz, I was wondering if there’s any difference between throwing and whipping the rackets through contact? I once hear you speak about the power of decelaration, has it something to do with that? Is it that you stop one segment of the kinetic chain more explosively when you whip the racket? In my opinion players like kokkinakis, monfils and kyrgios hit quite whippy where you see the even bend over in the follow through. Do you see what I mean? Does this create even more racket speed? Do you know feelbased drill tol learn it? Looking forward to your response! Best, Paul

Tomas, you have truly lived lived up to your name "Feel Tennis" with this fantastic demonstration of throwing and pushing. I think a lot of club players like myself find the concept of throwing the racket difficult because relaxing the arm/forearm is a very elusive and foreign feeling to us. As I understand it now, this can only be achieved by feeling the weight of the racket while timing the kinetic chain properly.
