How I throw plates, without a batt. I don't think bats are needed to throw most things, and I manage to throw all of my plates without bats. Hope this video is helpful!

hello! im so glad you posted this video i was wondering how you throw plates on a wheel without a bat and manage to get it off. may i ask on what type of surface you put it on for the drying process?? the wood i am using seems to get black mold when im drying. and i am using a shared studio space so i am not able to go in every day

Hi! I just use some unfinished wood boards. Some potters really like hardiebacker, so the plates don't warp as they dry. Unfortunately mold is such a common problem with drying super slowly on wooden boards. Perhaps you can try making yourself a damp box with a plaster bottom, which will help keep things leather hard, but not as moldy, since plaster seems to resist mold a bit more. Hopefully that helps!

spray a mixture of mostly water and some bleach onto your bats/boards its perfectly fine to do and when you go to trim only a very thin layer of clay will have any bleach on it so if your worried about it getting on your skin if you use a really dilute water solution you should be perfectly fine.

Isn’t it a pain in the ass to have a non electric pottery wheel and having to use your feet to keep it turning?

Hi! Not for me, I prefer having this kind of control, and since I like to actually throw with the wheel turning slower I'm more able to control exactly how fast the wheel goes. I also like how the wheel slows down as I work automatically, rather than having to adjust it with a pedal. I also like my pots better when I throw them on a kick wheel, I feel like I have more of a connection to the clay.

What she said. Also, my son has told me more than once, “ mom you throw better on your kick wheel.” He’s right. The automatic slowing happens at just the right times and gives me automatic control of my clay at the right moment. It spins for a really long time. But slows automatically as I pull the clay around. On my electric I don’t slow the wheel always as needed and it affects the end product.

Hi whats that device that looks like a mince grinder and what do you use it for? Pugmill??

Hi! It's a coffee grinder! It doesn't have any secret pottery uses, I just use it to make coffee. My throwing space is right next to my kitchen currently.

Why don't you use bats for plates most people just use a bat and let it dry right on the bat it picks right off
@NowWhatPotteryWorks
@NowWhatPotteryWorks 3 жыл бұрын
I really don't like using them. My wheelhead doesn't have bat pins, and I can make it work if I really want to use a bat, but I don't feel I need to throw my plates. It also saves me money, since enough bats to keep up with the number of things I throw is expensive. Also letting your plate just dry on the bat like that will warp them over time, and this way I don't have to worry about that.
