I’m so glad you said this! I live out in rural Illinois, 45 minutes from anything. Any time I’ve had plants to sell or give away on Facebook, people don’t want to come out here! I’ve even said, like, “come to this Walmart at 1pm if you want these plants” and still people say, “oh but can you come meet me here Tuesday at 5pm?” Etc. like nooo I can not spend $125 in gas to run crappy $5 plants all over the countryside. Lol! Sometimes it’s more sustainable to throw them out.

Thoroughly enjoyed this video. I'm doing the same thing with my plant collection and feel good about it. In the past I've always felt sad and guilty throwing away my babies. I am able to compost mine so that makes it a little easier. I can't for the life of me grow philodendrens of any kind so today out they go! Last summer I got rid of half of my hoya collection due to mealy bug infestation. I fought the good battle for 3 years and surrendered. It's very freeing to get rid of the ones that don't bring you joy. Thanks for making me feel better about purging. Love your sense of humor!

I've been downsizing as well as focusing on the plants that bring me joy. Dracaena + snake plants, oxalis, kalanchoe, aglaonema Siam Red, and orchids bring me the most joy. I spend most of my time in my bedroom, so it's filled with blooming orchids, my biggest snake plant bloomed 2x in 2023, and my Ishida have been in bloom nonstop for a year. I also have my indoor tomato plant that is over a year old and has never stopped producing new leaves and fruit. Purging is hard, but it does open up space and planters.

Yay! So I'm not the only one with dying & dead plants. I think we hang on to them for so long because we feel bad that they died or are dying in our care. We keep hoping to perform a miracle and bring them back to life, but it never happens. I have learned that when a plant doesn't make me smile anymore it has got to go. That just leaves room for those that do. Thank you for this video! You have my upmost respect for your honesty. To be truthful, others need to know that some plants are going to thrive, and some are going to perish. You just deal with it cause you love plants. Anytime you deal with any living thing you take the good with the bad. No matter what profession you're in. Doctor, farmer, and so on. You can't let the sadness take away the joy of loving what you do. It's that simple!

I get into that situation too. My plants are in the garden. (My climate allows that and my house conditions are not suited - too dark when everyone is out and there is a load of furniture). My garden often looks cluttered if I'm not planning ahead of time where to put plants to be salvaged. Often plants remain in limbo long enough to say "Enough with all that clutter". Most of the time the garden looks fine, with the exception of few pots which lay in "temporary" locations on a permanent basis.

As I'm watching I'm looking at my plants saying who can I combine and who can I get rid of and who has pests. Ty Nick. I do feel guilty when a plant has unloved itself but it is life and just learn from the experience and either try again or don't. I think that's why majority of what I have is snake plants, variety of pothos and spider plants and orchids and monsters delicious and string of turtles and a micans. It's a lot to remember who needs what and when. Now that I mention it. I should write it done. Time to journal in the plant book.😊 Happy new year!!!!

I'm about to do this! Also a thing no one talks about it's incredibly difficult to get rid of dirt in the city vs having a big yard to just dump. We had to dig up 6x20 plot in our yard when we moved in because the previous owners never walked their two giant dogs so the soil was urine soaked/nothing grew and it smelled like urea. I had 3 trash cans full, like hundreds of pounds. We had to rent a truck and take to a friend's house in the burbs because it would take years to toss via garbage bags

I agree, I do it. No plant is worth keeping if I have to pamper it. A friend of mine had over 100 beautiful plants and was downsizing to a warmer climate a couple thousand miles away. She placed all her plants outside knowing that it was going to be way below freezing at night and told them goodbye. A few days later she put all of them in the trash and put the pots at the curb to give away.

I have been doing this exact thing for the past couple days! I did chop and prop couple things, but I am not planning on keeping those plants, I'm thinking I will use those props during the upcoming plant swaps in spring. If nobody wants them then, they will go straight to compost. I am also so tired of the vining aroids, I do not want any plant that requires a moss pole, especially things with long internodes. After the pandemic madness of collecting ugly vines that all look the same, I am back to my initial passion for colorful weeds :D (pilea, nerve plants etc). I also feel your pain regarding pests. When you have many plants, pest control can be difficult. I spent a lot of money on predatory bugs during the past year, trying to get rid of thrips. Vining plants look awful once the bottom leaves get damaged and get yellow and die, while things that grow in a bush/rosette shape are much more resilient. Some of my calatheas / alocasias get spider mites every year, but once I treat them they grow new leaves and I can cut the ugly ones and you never know they ever existed. So something to keep in mind - collect plants that don't look sparse when they lose leaves. Also related to underwatering plants - I also occasionally forget to water plants on time, and they end up losing leaves. I am now only potting things based on watering needs. I do not use any terracotta at all, just plastic and ceramic, and if I see a plant ends up underwatered couple times, I bump up the pot size. I am also in the process of moving some plants (eg couple peperomias) to terrariums made in glass containers with lids that I got a goodwill. This is all meant to minimize the damage that I can do with neglect.

I have the 3x rule too! If I can’t keep it alive, try to salvage it, I’ll buy another if I really like it. But if that one dies I’m done with it. And trying to reroot it helps slow me down from impulse buying.

A few plants have even made it on to their fourth or fifth attempt.... which obviously never goes according to plan 😂

Sweat away king! Of course we don't notice and if we did whomever has nothing nice to say should keep their mouth shut. You're amazing and deserve nothing but joy and kindness! Great video.

I just did this. I felt bad, but I just had to so it! I felt so overwhelmed in my home. I also discovered that cutting my huge plants helped eliminate some of the chaos. I had over 300 plants, now I’m down to around 250 and I hate to say it but it feels so much better!

Watching you get rid of plants that are not making it gives me strength to do the same without guilt!

Highly entertaining and thankful for the reason behind each plant purge; also unprompted medical advice: excessive sweating is often a sign of vitamin D deficiency I recommend you get some blood work done; I had this same issue in the past and since learning about the deficiency ( and dr recommended ) taking a daily supplement I feel a lot better… anyways, happy growing!

I love this video, I've had trouble with several plants. One in particular I tried so hard with it, but I was so annoyed with it, I did throw it away.

I literally gave more than half my plants away, the ones folks didn’t want I threw out. I have less than 60 now and feel so FREE! CONGRATS on doing it!
