It's something that's hidden but dimly visible all the time but you just don't see it, and it's gotta be hidden -- but on the basis of it it makes possible what you do pay attention to, and it CAN be payed attention to (which is where Heidegger differs from Wittgenstein et al).

10:03 -Phenomenology as a method of analyzing Dasein, as apart from Plato and Aristotle's analyses onward, which always gets the wrong answer because the analyses *themselves* are present-at-hand analyses, and so everything shows up as "present," what Heidegger later calls the "metaphysics of presence." Heidegger believes being is more "absence," a withdrawal or a concealment, a "background" or the water to the fish, or even the light in the room perhaps (which we ourselves are as "disclosers"). Hence you get, in Western philosophy, variations of "presence" ontology, mainly in substances or "res" in Descartes' thinking (res cogitans, res extensa), the subject/object divide, etc.
