The first thing downloaded to my first computer was footage of that run - download time measured in hours. The view was from the tail forward so I could look both over canopy and into engines. The compression of airflow defined and swept back with a howl as things went transonic. When engines shut down the shockwave appeared to quickly shove the car back. Alarms were heard. The one comment by Wing Commander Green (I love writing that) following his wrestling match to stay on course was something like, “Whew, that was a bit of a thing.” So dry, the British. Well done.

I've known about this machine for a long time. What amazes me is the engineering and science that goes on into making this happen. It's not just about who has the most courage, most power, and simply "sending it". Little things like how do you keep the wheel bearings from melting? Tires are probably solid and not rubber based. What does suspension do at those speeds? I'm sure your whole paradigm about many aspects are repurposed. I think this would be way easier if it had some form of wings; even baby flaps or flippers would help. But this does without, done the hard way. What stood out to me the most is that he was still relying on manual steering input at such speeds. That's amazing. That's amazing and THAT should shush all the naysayers about this not being a car.

@@epicjason9 this is 300km/h faster than the top speed of a 747 flying 10km high, and the 747 (and literally every other plane) is that fast because the air density is about a 3rd of the density at sea level, meaning that the 747 has much less air resistance than it would at sea level. Also, the 747, like all modern commercial jetliners uses high-bypass turbofans, a type of engine that, while extremely efficient and powerful at medium speeds, is incapable of reaching supersonic speeds, for that you need a low-bypass turbofan or a turbojet, preferably with afterburner (reheat), very few aircraft are capable of going supersonic without afterburner (supercruising), examples are the F-22, the Eurofighter Typhoon and Concorde. And btw, fighter jets going balls to the wall at low altitudes don't go much faster than this, only 200-400 km/h more.
