I thought perhaps he'd been a drag-car racer. Then I noticed the crest on his right chest, 'Royal Air Force'. Ahhh...(as the Brits say..) "Right, then." The pilot of course seems very impressive, and of course brave. Really, going supersonic in general is a very difficult thing, and I would have bet against it working. It sure was not easy to do that in aircraft, and on land there are many new challenges to encounter.

The first thing downloaded to my first computer was footage of that run - download time measured in hours. The view was from the tail forward so I could look both over canopy and into engines. The compression of airflow defined and swept back with a howl as things went transonic. When engines shut down the shockwave appeared to quickly shove the car back. Alarms were heard. The one comment by Wing Commander Green (I love writing that) following his wrestling match to stay on course was something like, “Whew, that was a bit of a thing.” So dry, the British. Well done.

I just can’t believe how his brain must be feeling, taking your eyes off the windshield from where you are going, too down at the gauges while muscling the steering wheel and foot manipulating the gas,while going speeds of 750+. It’s like driving a regular car at 120 mph and how much you are paying attention, times I don’t know how much more. Balls of steel, knowing that at any moment one thing goes wrong, it’s over. I've known about this machine for a long time. What amazes me is the engineering and science that goes on into making this happen. It's not just about who has the most courage, most power, and simply "sending it". Little things like how do you keep the wheel bearings from melting? Tires are probably solid and not rubber based. What does suspension do at those speeds? I'm sure your whole paradigm about many aspects are repurposed. I think this would be way easier if it had some form of wings; even baby flaps or flippers would help. But this does without, done the hard way. What stood out to me the most is that he was still relying on manual steering input at such speeds. That's amazing. That's amazing and THAT should shush all the naysayers about this not being a car.

@@SuperBowser87 I once did 290mph on my bicycle, a Raleigh chopper, a lovely red one, I think it was about 1974. Anyway I would love you to believe it but I can't offer you any proof. Please believe me! My mate Wayne saw it, tough guy he was, I once saw him battle three trolls and forced them back under a bridge but of course I have no proof of that either. You will believe me? Won't you?

I am pretty sure that the "Blue Flame" did the sound barrier first back in the 60's /70's
@sgkingly8392
@sgkingly8392 Жыл бұрын
Peak speed of Blue Flame was 650 ish mph so about Mach 0.85 and average was lower. The car never had the burn time to go any faster and they ended up lighting the rockets in 2 batches to keep the average speed up. Also the Goodyear tyre company limited top speed to 700mph (Mach 0.9 ish)

@@sailorman8668 I think they might have confused Blue Flame with the Budweiser Rocket which may or may not have broken the sound barrier in the late 70s but the timing was questionable and no sonic boom was heard and they also made no attempt at the land speed record

@@epicjason9 this is 300km/h faster than the top speed of a 747 flying 10km high, and the 747 (and literally every other plane) is that fast because the air density is about a 3rd of the density at sea level, meaning that the 747 has much less air resistance than it would at sea level. Also, the 747, like all modern commercial jetliners uses high-bypass turbofans, a type of engine that, while extremely efficient and powerful at medium speeds, is incapable of reaching supersonic speeds, for that you need a low-bypass turbofan or a turbojet, preferably with afterburner (reheat), very few aircraft are capable of going supersonic without afterburner (supercruising), examples are the F-22, the Eurofighter Typhoon and Concorde. And btw, fighter jets going balls to the wall at low altitudes don't go much faster than this, only 200-400 km/h more.
